The University of Cape Town’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for a 3-year, full-time Junior Research Fellow position funded through the Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders (DEAL) programme. This role will work closely with the DELTAS II programme-funded project research grouping: African Leadership for Measuring brain health in children and Adolescents (ALMA) which aims to explore mechanisms of brain development, measurement of brain function and behaviour, and interventions to promote child development. The Junior Research Fellow will oversee and co-ordinate research, co-author and first author research publications, as well as supervise and teach students within the UCT Neuroscience Institute programme and be supported to write funding proposals and foster research collaborations. The successful candidate will need to have research experience in a relevant field, be motivated and able to work independently within a dynamic clinical research environment in Neuroscience. The activities of the Junior Research Fellow will be based at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the UCT Neuroscience Institute at Groote Schuur Hospital. The person will be required to travel between the two institutions regularly.

Requirements for the job:

  • A PhD in Psychology, Public Health, Neuropsychology, Medicine, Health, or relevant discipline
  • At least 2 years of research experience post PhD submission in relevant field
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in a relevant discipline with at least one first or senior author publication
  • Excellent Computer skills. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and proficiency in statistical analysis and/or image manipulation software(s)
  • Experience with teaching and supervision
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Excellent communication and written skills

The following will be advantageous:

  • Experience in postgraduate supervision and training
  • Data analysis and presentation skills
  • Experience in grant writing

Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate is expected to dedicate at least 80% of their time conducting research, supervising and /mentoring postgraduate students.
    • Carrying out a research project linked to the core interdisciplinary research focus of DELTAS Africa II
    • Producing an annual progress report with at least one – two planned research outputs per annum, linked to the research project
    • Involvement in postgraduate teaching and co-supervision. Postgraduate (co-) supervision is limited to a maximum of two students.
  • The successful candidate is expected to spend a maximum of twenty percent (20%) of their time on administrative-related activities such as writing funding proposals.
    • Writing and submitting a research grant in the first year of appointment with the aim to secure funding for continued research through independent grants

The annual cost of employment, including benefits is between R544 062 and R658 000 (post is funded from research funding) depending on qualifications and experience.
