Job Purpose | Undergo training and perform work at the level of a Professional Engineer in all relevant technical areas of the low voltage (LV), medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV) networks. |
Key Responsibility Areas | • Undergo training according to the training Programme for Candidate Engineers as scheduled by the Manager SHERQ and Training and under the instruction of the appropriate branch manager. • Participate actively in practical field work such as cable jointing, overhead line construction and substation construction by working closely with Electricians and Technicians in order to develop a fundamental understanding of work processes and procedures. • Engage in the planning, organisation and execution of construction and maintenance projects undertaken by Distribution and Transmission departments at the level required of a Professional Engineer. • Investigate and solve practical engineering problems relating to construction, maintenance and operational issues as assigned by any technical division, by applying engineering fundamentals to develop solutions in order to ensure the adoption and selection of the optimum technologies. • Undertake feasibility studies as directed by the Manager HV Planning or Manager HV project by assessing alternatives and making recommendations contained in a comprehensive report in order to extend, upgrade or strengthen the high voltage networks. • Engage in the design of LV and MV distribution systems. • Liaise with consultants, architects and developers through meetings and correspondence in order to determine site, building, switchgear, transformers and cable and protective gear requirements for the reinforcement of 33 kV, 132kV and 275kV systems. • Engage in the drafting of technical specifications and contract documentation for electrical goods and service. • Adjudicate tenders and compile bid reports relating to the supply and delivery of electrical goods and services by understanding the procurement policies and procedures in order to ensure timeous procurement of the goods and services. |

Job Purpose | Directs professional engineering requirements and procedures to support functional areas within a department through participation in the prioritization or alignment of the key performance areas. |
Key Responsibility Areas | • Studies, evaluates and prepares opinions on the capabilities of the Department to support the strategic intent in terms of engineering infrastructure development. • Executes delegated responsibilities in respect of leading professional project teams from inception to completion and contributes to the identification and development of key professional engineering skills. • Manages the principles and applications associated with the development and presentation of technical designs for complex forms of a variety of engineering works relating to the Departments area of responsibility including the compilation of technical codes of practice. • Manages the preparation collation of contract documentation and evaluating tender applications for a variety of complex engineering works relating to the Department, including the development of life cycle cost models. • Assumes the responsibility of ‘Engineer on Site’ and directs professionals in respect of Council’s requirements and general conditions of contract. • Manages the Departments responsibilities associated with the development and execution of an Asset Management Plan. • Disseminates information on the professional aspects of engineering design concepts and provides reports detailing interventions and outcomes relating to a variety of complex forms of engineering works. • Performing special investigations into unique HV Substations problems and develop solutions from first principle to solve these unit problems. • Identify design deficiencies from equipment poor performance trends and feedback to HV Projects, HV Planning, and performance specifications development. • Managing, adapting, and adhering to HV Operations plans, objectives and action plans to align the HV Substations Branch with the changing direction and technologies. • Planning and controlling medium term acquisition and optimisation of resources to achieve HV Substation objectives and targets to ensure that the customer goals are met, integrating and coordination the HV Substations Branch plans, setting and monitoring performance measures and ensuring that corrective actions are taken. |
