Meteorological Technician

Observation:

  • Perform routine weather observation duties that include: –
    o Visual weather observation and compile routine reports,
    o Providing special reports for changes in weather.
    o Providing observation reports timeously as per schedule or as per the
    timeliness of the client’s requests
    o Downloading of remote observation station data
    o Collection and quality control of manual rainfall station
    o Quality control of AWS and ARS data and transmission thereof to central data
    base

  • Perform routine and adhoc maintenance of SAWS Observations infrastructure
    (Thorough understanding of Automatic Weather Stations is required)

Internal and External Customer Relations:

  • Liaise with clients as per office plan.
  • Represent SAWS at Stakeholder meetings as per plan.

Total Quality Management

  • Apply prevention and corrective action procedures on all findings related to weather
    observation.
  • Promote a quality culture amongst the staff within the office.
  • Promote the SAWS Quality Policy and intergrade it into the day-to-day activities of the
    office
  • Provide assistance during audits of the regional office as required.
  • Perform regular inspections to ensure all work done is according to documented
    requirements.
  • Ensure that the work environment complies with legislative requirements relations to
    OHS.

Minimum Requirements and Attributes:

  • A Grade 12 Certificate with Maths and Science.
  • Weather Observers certificate.
  • Ability to obtain a competent Aviation Meteorological Observation (AMO) certificate
    within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to read, analyse and interpret written request for weather data and
    information.
  • Knowledge of international standards such as WMO and ICAO. Advanced knowledge
    of observation tools.
  • A valid code 08 driver’s license or be in a position to obtain a valid driver’s license
    within 3 months of employment.

SCM Demand Management Practitioner

Job Summary:
To provide an effective and efficient Demand Management Services to the Organisation.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Coordinate workshops with Users for Procurement Planning.
  • Collate input obtained from divisions on procurement requirements for the financial year.
  • Review of draft specifications for Request for Quotations and Competitive Bids received from the
    User Departments.
  • Schedule Bid Specification Committee meeting as and when required.
  • Assists with conducting market research to ensure supplier validity and/or identify possible
    alternative suppliers / goods.

  • Engage with stakeholders on internal procedures and processes to ensure compliance and service

Required Minimum Education/Training:

  • Supply Chain Management (NQF 6) or equivalent.
  • Registration with CIPS will be an added advantage.

Required Minimum Work Experience:

  • At least 3 years’ experience as public sector Supply Chain Practitioner in Demand Management

Work Integrated Learning Programme:
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) invites applications for eighteen months (18) Work
Integrated Learning Programme., from any TVET College Learners in South African in the following
field:

National Certificate in Public Management (N6) Ref: GRC 2024

This program is created for students to integrate disciplinary knowledge and skills with work,
through the application of knowledge and the use of those skills in real and professional work
contexts.

Applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • An applicant must have completed an N6 in the above-mentioned field of study and
    attach a transcript.
  • An applicant will be required to submit their Curriculum Vitae, Certificate of achievement
    and letter from the College implying intent to complete/fulfil Diploma, on the SAWS

Job Summary:
The Communications Officer is responsible for creating the content on behalf of the South African
Weather Service, under the supervision of a manager. The content ranges from writing press releases
to developing blog content, and creating social media posts, updating the content on the SAWS’
website in supporting efforts to position the entity as the only authoritative voice for weather related
information and publishing staff announcements for improved Employee Engagement. information.

Key Performance Areas:
Internal communication

  • Together with the rest of the Communications teams, implement the communications
    strategy in support of the Annual Performance Plan and the SAWS’ mandate
  • Support the Communications and Stakeholder Relations teams with branding related
    material and identify the need for these materials
  • Ensure the compilation and distribution of quarterly internal newsletters, emails, Hot-Off the
    Press news flashes etc.
  • Identify the need and/or assist with the development of internal publications and creative
    info graphs
  • Write company announcements and news articles on key developments
  • Provide inputs into and/or do regular checks of the SAWS intranets to ensure update sites
  • Basic graphic design skills required for internal content and engagement

External Communication

  • Monitor various social media platforms and alerts, relevant publications and where a
    response is required, direct it through the relevant channels
  • Ensure that the corporate content on the SAWS’ website is updated and remains relevant
  • Monitor trends and stay and stay abreast of related developments to ensure the timelines of
    the content produced

SAWS’ Event Coordination

  • Support and coordinate the communication, awareness and stakeholder relation aspect of
    organisational campaigns
  • Sourcing of service providers for events and any branding or promotional material
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to coordinate the SAWS’ Corporate Events such as
    ➢ Science-related events
    ➢ HM- related events
    ➢ WMO events, etc
    ➢ Events aimed at Socio-Economic Development initiatives

Administration, Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Maintain digital media archives including photos, videos etc
  • Ensure that all communications and marketing material align with brand standards
  • Ensure TQM compliance of the CSR department as TQM champion

Stakeholder Management

  • Maintenance of relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Required Minimum Education/Training:
