An opportunity exists for an exceptional Reading and Research Specialist on a permanent part-time basis to join the school from January 2025 (Negotiable).

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • 3 years library experience
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • MS-Office proficient
  • SACE Registered

Candidates should have the following attributes:

Duties (not an exhaustive list):

  • Develop a passion and love for reading amongst the boys
  • Managing and implementing schoolwide reading programs
  • Manage all library functions (sourcing, cataloging, distribution of materials, etc.)
  • Guide boys’ reading according to individual interests and abilities
  • Support the boys learning by the facilitation of research, prompting inquiry and inspiring reading
  • Create a culture and an environment, in which reading is valued, supported, and encouraged
  • Plan and co-ordinate ‘Book Week’, set up Book Displays and creative display to encourage reading
  • Create a library environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students
  • Recommend budget for the library
  • Promotion of the St Peter’s Prep Schools attributes and values
  • Teach according to the St Peter’s Prep Schools Best Practice pedagogy
  • The working hours will be from 07:15 – 13:00, Monday – Friday in the Library

LIBRARIAN / MEDIA CENTRE EXPERT

We seek a dedicated and innovative Librarian to fill the role of Media Centre Head. Only experienced educators, who are passionate about teaching children and whose track record displays evidence of exemplary performance, and ‘going the extra mile’, need apply.

The following skills and attributes are essential to this position:

Applicants must:

  • have a recognised Teaching Qualification (experience in media, journalism, or library science would be an advantage).
  • SACE registered.
  • have a clear vision of media centres of the future.
  • have an extensive knowledge of children’s books and authors.
  • have the ability to match each child with books appropriate to his/her level of ability and interest.
  • have the ability to create a school-wide reading culture and foster a love for reading, especially in children who struggle.
  • keep abreast of new technologies and current trends relating to media centre learning.
  • be able to teach Research and Citation; as well as Media ethics.
  • have good communication skills.
  • must be a team player.
  • know about the Thinking Schools South Africa (TSSA) learning strategies or be willing to learn.
  • be able to source and recommend suitable websites for research projects.
  • be able to use the ‘Google’ platform and possess/be willing to undergo Level 1 training
  • be familiar with Libwin or be willing to learn.
  • research and source new textbooks and online reading programmes for academic enrichment and support.
  • manage and administer all textbooks for all grades.
  • prepare and administer Media Centre budgets.
  • prepare weekly general knowledge quizzes, and coach literacy quiz teams and enter these into inter-school competitions.
  • ability to teach Ed-Tech, Afrikaans/English would be an advantage.
  • have or are willing to undergo criminal clearance checks for working with children.
