Post-Doctoral Research Scientist

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC is seeking to fill the position of Post-doctoral Research Scientist and above to work for its regional office based in Dakar, Senegal.

Roles and responsibilities
● Contribute to the development of information systems and provision of analytical methodological support and advices to researchers.
● Lead and contribute to proposal development and fundraising for research projects in the unit.
● Provide statistical advice and support to researchers developing proposals and writing scientific papers.
● Lead the development of study protocols and tools and ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained.
● Oversee/lead development of field and training manuals.
● Lead the data management and data analyses of the assigned project.
● Lead and collaborate with the institutional partners to ensure quality deliverables.
● Ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained.
● Oversee fieldwork in the execution of the research projects to ensure timely implementation of field activities.
● Ensure community mobilization and education of the community in relation to the research.
● Contribute to the development of different project reports.
● Contribute to institutional publications including and not limited to lay dissemination materials such as policy/research briefs, fact sheets and scientific papers.
● Contribute to policy engagement and the unit’s strategic planning.
● Contribute to cultivation of relations with key institutional donors.
● Represent the Center at high level national, regional and international forums, including relevant technical working groups and expert committees.
● Define own area of research interest through developing proposals, concept notes and publishing in the area.
● Perform other duties as required assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications, skills and experience:
● PhD in in Statistics, Data Science, Econometrics, Demography, Public Health, Sociology or equivalent in related disciplines with strong quantitative components.
● Have 3-5 years of relevant post-doctoral experience.
● Experience working in a research institution, conducting research and managing research projects.
● Strong proposal writing skills with a good track record of winning research grants.
● Proven quantitative skills, with extensive familiarity with related analysis packages (e.g. STATA, R, SAS, or SPSS).
● Scientific writing skills and a record of publications on relevant topics in sub-Saharan Africa.
● Experience working on health facility data, health systems data, or family planning will be an added advantage.
● Experience working in Francophone West Africa.
● Interpersonal and organizational skills to work in a culturally diverse team.
● Fluent in French and English (written and spoken).

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST (MADIVA)

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

The MADIVA (Multi-morbidity Action through Data Insights and Visualization for Africa) project aims to develop data science techniques and solutions to tackle the problem of multimorbidity in Africa – the problem of multiple co-occurring diseases significantly adding to the health burden in Africa. Our primary research sites in urban Nairobi, Kenya and rural Bushbuckridge, South Africa each have rich data sets from longitudinal studies collected by the health and demographic surveillance systems based there, together with a nascent set of clinical health records and genomic data. We will develop and apply data science techniques to link the different data sets, build dashboards for different stakeholders and apply new machine learning techniques to automatically stratify populations for risk profiles to different diseases, including the use of polygenic risk scores.

APHRC is seeking to recruit a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist to support and maintain the productivity and research output of MADIVA and other projects in the Chronic Diseases Management Unit of the Health and Wellbeing Theme.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the development of APHRC’s evidence use agenda through utility of data science and/or artificial intelligence tools including data mining, development of data visualization tools, and statistical modelling among others.
  • Contribute to the application of innovative analytics to systematically extract information from data sets that are too large/complex to be dealt with by traditional approaches.
  • Contribute to the development of APHRC’s evidence use agenda through utility of data science and/or artificial intelligence tools including data mining, development of data visualization tools, and statistical modelling, among others.
  • Assists in managing projects efficiently and contribute to fundraising efforts through proposal development, securing grants, and building partnerships to support APHRC’s research and impact goals.
  • Be responsible for, and coordinate the processes of tracking, collating, organizing, and making available population health data from diverse sources.
  • Lead the development of study protocols and tools and ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained.
  • Secure and manage the necessary human, financial and material resources of the project.
  • Lead the development of project reports.
  • Oversee data quality and analyses.
  • Contribute to proposal development and fundraising for research projects in the unit.
  • Mentor junior researchers and facilitate the Center’s training programs as needed.
  • Represent the Center at high-level national, regional, and international forums, including relevant technical working groups and expert committees.
  • Contribute to the development of information systems and provision of analytical methodological support and advice to researchers.
  • Define own area of research interest in data science/statistics/public health through developing proposals, concept notes, and publishing in the area.
  • Contribute to institutional publications including but not limited to lay dissemination materials such as policy/research briefs and fact sheets; and contribute to policy engagement and the unit’s strategic planning.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Statistics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Health Informatics or equivalent in related disciplines with a specialization in R; graduated in the last 2 years.
  • Data management, programming and modelling experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying big data analytics, preferably in healthcare.
  • Evidence of publications is an essential requirement.
  • Highly motivated and committed to biomedical research.
  • Interest in Epidemiology and preferably chronic diseases including multimorbidity.

RESEARCHER- HEALTH SYSTEMS STRENGTHENING

APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

APHRC seeks to recruit a Researcher to work in the Health Systems Strengthening Unit within the Health and Wellbeing Theme.  This new role, arising out of our tremendous growth is part of our five-year strategic plan, and focuses on enhancing our health systems strengthening (HSS) portfolio through targeted health systems research projects.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Lead the designing, implementing, and managing health systems strengthening research within the Center. Tasks may include study conceptualization and design, project management and coordination including, obtaining ethical approvals and research permits for studies, recruiting and training of field interviewers, supervision of field work and data management, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Collaborate in the co-design and test interventions with stakeholders to inform health systems policy & practice.
  • Lead and contribute to financial sustainability of the unit through contributing to fundraising efforts in the unit and cultivating relations with key donors and partners.
  • Lead and contribute to scientific paper writing, policy briefs and other publications on health systems research outcomes.
  • Supervise, mentor and train early career researchers in the unit and the Center at large.
  • Lead policy engagement, knowledge translation and communication to appropriate audiences.
  • Participate in strategic planning for the unit and contribute to regular unit reports.

 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience 

  • PhD preferably in a health-related field including Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Systems or Clinical Medicine.
  • Post-doctoral experience in research on health systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Experience in developing proposals and attracting research grants, particularly in health systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing research teams and partnerships.
  • Experience in conducting and managing health systems research projects.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analysis skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data), with extensive familiarity with quantitative statistical packages (e.g. STATA, SAS or SPSS).
  • Excellent communication skills and good record of publications on relevant areas in sub- Saharan Africa.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team and an understanding of working among vulnerable populations such as in urban slums and rural populations.

Desirable

  • Expertise/experience in working with healthcare workers, caregivers and policy makers.
  • Expertise in design of community-based cluster randomized trials and quasi experimental studies.
  • Expertise in qualitative methods, including familiarity with qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo).

The successful candidate may be appointed at Associate Research Scientist (3-5 years after PhD), or Research Scientist (6-11 years after PhD) or Senior Research Scientist (12+ years after PhD) levels depending on experience and track record. These positions are classified under Internationally Recruited Positions (IRP), Grades III to VI in our scales.
