Job Description
Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) presents an exciting opportunity for an admitted attorney or advocate, to join the Legal team at CCBA. This role will play a significant part in providing legal advisory services across the Group. The successful applicant will be reporting into the General Counsel.

Key Purpose:

The Legal Counsel role requires a technically excellent, commercially-minded lawyer who can support the business in identifying and proactively managing legal risks across all business operations, ensuring effective risk mitigation and reducing potential liabilities. By providing timely and accurate legal support for business initiatives, the role enhances the business’ decision-making and execution speed. As a senior lawyer in the team, the successful candidate will be expected to be collaborative, with a growth mindset, supporting a culture of continuous improvement across the legal function and the business as a whole.

The successful candidate will be aware of current best-practice in contract drafting, be able to optimize contractual terms through skilled negotiation, and to achieve cost savings and minimize legal exposure while efficiently supporting the business’ commercial legal needs. They will support compliance assurance by maintaining adherence to relevant laws and internal policies, enabling the company to operate within established legal frameworks while driving a culture of compliance and strong governance practices. They will be required to provide legally sound and commercially astute advice to support the business in effectively managing and resolving disputes. Additionally, they will foster stakeholder trust and confidence through reliable, business-oriented legal advice and the development of strong internal relationships. Responsibilities:

Effective Risk Mitigation: Identification and proactive management of legal risks across all business operations, reducing potential liabilities
Optimized Contractual Terms: Successful negotiation of favorable terms in contracts, achieving cost savings and mitigating legal exposure
Compliance Assurance: High compliance rates achieved with relevant laws and internal policies, ensuring the company operates within legal frameworks
Effective Legal Support for Business Initiatives: Timely and accurate legal support provided for business initiatives, enhancing decision-making and execution speed
Stakeholder Trust and Confidence: Strong relationships built with internal stakeholders, demonstrated by consistent delivery of reliable, business-oriented legal advice

Accountabilities:

Compliance with legislation and policies across markets
Efficiently drafting, negotiating and reviewing contracts
Effectively managing legal expenditure
Measurable decrease in identified legal risks and liabilities
Skills, Experience & Education
Qualifications:

Admitted attorney or advocate, or equivalent
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent
Advanced degrees (LLM or MBA) are an advantage
Experience:

8+ years post-qualification legal experience in commercial law, legal compliance, corporate governance, litigation, and contract management in a big law firm and a corporate environment
Experience working within a multinational corporate environment, preferably in the FMCG sector (ideally with exposure to complex, cross-border legal issues)
Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining legal compliance frameworks is a significant advantage
Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining contract management systems is an advantage

Skills:

Strong proficiency in drafting and negotiating complex agreements, with a focus on efficiency and mitigating risks
Demonstrated expertise in handling compliance matters across multiple jurisdictions
Strong analytical skills with a deep understanding of linking legal strategies to business objectives, and having a solution focused approach to legal matters
