Volunteer Project Officer Intern – WikiProjectMed

Language Services – Remote

Background

This is a joint project with Wiki Project Med Foundation to make clear, reliable, comprehensive, up-to-date educational resources and information in the biomedical and related social sciences freely available to all people in the language of their choice, online and off. Read more.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are to:

  • Translate 50 articles into 5 core languages (adjustable based on capacity).
  • Develop and pilot a framework to engage with other volunteer PO in this project and complete specific objectives.

The project will end when the objectives have been achieved or at the end of the contract period (whichever happens first).

The role 

To support the Language Services Team in coordinating translation projects, ensuring they are completed efficiently and within the expectations of CLEAR Global management and Wiki Project Med Foundation. Coordinate collaboration among translators on specific tasks, providing engagement, appropriate levels of translation quality and turnaround. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage specific language service projects as assigned by Partner Coordinators and Project Officers;
  • Upload and download project files, run pre- and post-production checks;
  • Track project progress and delivery, keep project trackers up-to-date, and provide regular status updates to Partner Coordinators and Project Officers;
  • Maintain an organized project environment across platforms, maintaining project records, files and databases as assigned;
  • Assist with building and managing translator teams, as well as general translator recruitment, as requested by Project Officers;
  • Maintain effective communication with translators throughout the project, ensuring that translators remain engaged throughout the project and have a clear understanding of project expectations;
  • Carry out translator communications around translation quality and turnaround, replying to translators’ messages, ensuring task pick-up, flagging issues, etc;
  • Handle other project management tasks as assigned;
  • Act in the best interest of the organization during the project period.

These roles and responsibilities are approximate and may change over time.

Qualifications 

  • Excellent command of English. Knowledge of other languages is an advantage;
  • Previous experience in translation and/or interpreting (internships and volunteering are considered valid experiences) is desirable;
  • Previous experience working with non-profit organizations is desirable;
  • Strong writing skills in English;
  • Knowledge of CAT tools is a plus.

Volunteer Quality Intern

Background

This role offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience within an international non-profit organization, assisting in building the Quality Community Working Group for the Language Services Team.

Objectives

The objectives of this role are to:

  • Pilot the community working group for key language pairs working in machine translation post-editing projects, i.e.
  • pilot community-driven quality spot checks program in production,
  • prepare a use case with up to 3 process improvement recommendations.
  • Engage top community contributors in a new quality initiative.
  • Prepare support materials, such as tasks instructions, golden standards, checklists.

The role 

To support the Language Services Quality Officer to ensure CLEAR Global is providing quality language services to its non-profit partners, work on tasks pertaining to the daily quality operations of the Language Services Team, and assist in the quality monitoring and control tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing, testing, and implementing quality operations programs, in particular by piloting community-driven quality spot checks initiative;
  • Report quality issues, underdelivering areas, and process improvement needs;
  • Collaborate with members of the larger Language Services Team in tasks related to quality and process management;
  • Carry out administrative tasks, data entry, and data collection;
  • Track pilot progress and delivery, keep pilot documentation up-to-date, and provide regular status updates to the LS Senior Quality Officer;
  • Maintain an organized pilot environment across platforms, maintaining records, files and databases as assigned;
  • Actively participate with building and managing community working group, as well as community recruitment, as requested by the LS Senior Quality Officer;
  • Maintain effective communication with community members throughout the pilot, ensuring that they remain engaged and have a clear understanding of quality program’s expectations;
  • Carry out community communications around tasks’ assignments, quality and turnaround, replying to community members’ messages, ensuring task pick-up, flagging issues, etc;
  • Handle other quality operations tasks as assigned;
  • Act in the best interest of the organization during the project period.

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a University degree program (preferred degree in translation, communication, or a related field);

  • Knowledge of CAT tools, Machine Translation, and Quality Management basics is a plus.

Volunteer Terminology Intern

Background

CLEAR Global is seeking a volunteer intern to develop terminology training. This is a key area of work for the organization, and building capacity in our diverse community is vital to delivering high-quality products and services to partner organizations.

The course will be open to any community member and will be available via the TWB Learning Center.

The Role

The role involves designing and developing a self-paced, on-demand training on terminology for the TWB Learning Center. They will draw on best practices to develop an effective online training course based on TWB’s training framework.  

Responsibilities

  • Interview with key stakeholders in the organization
  • Develop an initial course proposal and curriculum design based on existing template documents and needs assessment.
  • Develop course content, including learning materials, activities, multimedia resources, handouts, and other alternative content as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the testing and feedback process to validate the content.
  • Develop a small number of participant handouts to have as sharable resources.
  • Combine online training content, participant handouts, and evaluation tools into one easy-to-follow self-study package.

Qualifications

  • Background in developing and delivering training for remote audiences.
  • Background in terminology management.
  • Excellent command of English. Knowledge of other languages is an advantage;
  • Previous experience in translation and/or interpreting (internships and volunteering are considered valid experiences) is desirable;
  • Previous experience working with non-profit organizations is desirable;
  • Strong writing skills in English;
  • Command of online training tools, learning management systems, and other relevant e-learning technologies (Moodle and H5P a plus).
