Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:

  • Relieve the Sinker in charge of the crew should the need arise and take charge within agreed parameters in line with legal and safety protocols
  • Sign legal declarations for a workplace, record and be in charge of explosive usage
  • Construction work effected to standard and within timelines
  • Safe operation of the stage, including stage inspections, installation of services and concrete lining
  • Safe and timeous bank activities, including slinging arrangements and effective shaft signalling for the safe conveyance of equipment, materials, explosives, blasted rock and people
  • Effective risk management and compliance with DMR, M&RC and Client’s policies, procedures, standards and safety protocols
  • Effective communication to ensure safe and timeous workflows
  • Effective self-management and team supervision in alignment with M&RC’s values
Minimum requirements

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:

  • Grade 12 or NQF 4 equivalent
  • Numeracy skills
  • Blasting Certificate (Scheduled Mines)
  • Onsetter Certificate
  • Basic Rigging Certificate (advantageous)
  • Working at Heights Certificate (advantageous)
  • Certificate to operate an Excavator (advantageous)
  • Certificate to operate a Batch Plant (advantageous)
  • Certificate to operate a Drill Rig (site specific)
  • Ability to lead a team and take legal accountability for the workplace
  • Good English verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead a team and take legal accountability for the workplace
  • Medically fit for underground physical work
  • Successfully complete MRTA internal training as per the skills matrix for the role

Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:

  • Batch Plant (advantageous)
  • Certificate to operate a Drill Rig (advantageous – site specific)
  • Ability to lead a team and take legal accountability for the workplace
  • Good English verbal and written communication skills

  • Medically fit for underground physical work
  • Successfully complete MRTA internal training as per the skills matrix for the role

 Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience as a Stagehand in an underground mining environment
  • Experience in shaft sinking, vertical shaft equipping and construction
  • Experience in being able to take charge of a crew and taking legal accountability (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of shaft concrete lining, wetcrete applications and civil construction

                          ii.          Olifantsfontein, pre-1994

                         iii.          ESTC (Engineering Skills Training Centre) James Park

                         iv.          GFA (Goldfields Training Academy)

  •       Contract of Apprenticeship signed off by employer and Department of Manpower
  •    Valid First Aid Certificate (Essential, if not available, must obtain at on-boarding)
  •    Valid Code EB driver’s license
  •    Sound interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills in English
  •     Medically fit to work underground (including HTS, RFA)

Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:

  •       5 year’s mining industry experience (underground and surface)
  •       5 year’s trade experience as a Diesel Mechanic

•    Section 13, 26D Electrical Trade Certificate / MIETTB (Mining Industry Engineering Trades Training Board)

•    Mine based technical certifications (e.g. Electrical LV and MV field)
