Purpose Statement

Under the guidance of the Manager: Insurance Fraud, investigate instances of risk related to various types of fraud incidents across Capitec (e.g. external fraud such as credit application fraud for Capitec Bank and policyholder or claims fraud for Capitec Insurance. This will include internal fraud, serious breach of policies and procedures, and criminal syndicates). Investigate the matter, the parties involved and provide appropriate evidence for disciplinary hearings and/or criminal proceedings. Identify control weaknesses and recommend preventative measures, improvements, and training initiatives against potential fraud.

Experience

Minimum:

  • 3 plus years’ experience as a Forensic Investigator/Auditor
  • Background in funeral investigations or related qualifications (e.g., CFE, criminology, forensic law and Auditing, etc)
  • Strong reporting and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in (e.g. English, Afrikaans, Sepedi, Izulu, Xhosa)
  • Report writing

Ideal: 

  • Proven experience as a Forensic Investigator/Auditor in the Financial Services Sector

Qualifications (Minimum)

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Forensics

Main Purpose

As a Specialist: Anti Money Laundering your primary responsibilities will include:

Develop and Maintain AML Standards: 

Take responsibility for designing, implementing, and continuously improving the organisation’s anti-money laundering (AML) standards, frameworks, and best practices to ensure robust financial crime prevention across all business areas. 

Provide Specialist Oversight and Support: 

Offer expert oversight and guidance to enhance the effectiveness of the AML and Financial Crime framework, including reporting, monitoring, control measures, process optimisation, and the successful delivery of AML-related projects. 

Risk Advocacy and Industry Engagement: 

Represent the organisation as a risk specialist by contributing insights at industry forums and regulatory meetings, and by supporting governance and risk management initiatives that shape the wider approach to financial crime prevention. 

Specific responsibilities relevant to Client and Payment Screening

  • Operationalise RMCP: Ensure that the Screening Standard is operationalised fully in all client facing channels and ensure that ongoing client and payment screening system and process conform to the required standard
  • Sanctions Regime Analysis: Conduct in-depth research and maintain expert-level knowledge of all relevant sanctions lists and regulatory requirements,
  • Business Requirements Translation: Translate complex sanctions policies, list updates, and regulatory changes into clear, concise, and unambiguous business requirement documents, user stories, and logic rules for our technology and product development teams.
  • System Tuning & Optimisation: Collaborate with AML technology teams to design, test, and implement sanctions screening rules and filters.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Legal or Compliance or Auditing or Business Management
  • At least 5 years’ relevant AML experience (EDD, transaction monitoring etc.) within a financial institution/ banking environment with a strong focus on client screening.
  • AML regulatory requirement experience and proficiency

In this role, you’ll work on end-to-end model validations across different domains, take ownership of key deliverables, and build challenger models to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance of the bank’s models.

  • Proven 3-6 years’ experience in financial modelling (Forecasting and Stress Testing models), particularly in pricing, capital modelling, or IFRS 9 provisions.

About The Role/Team

Our Model Validation team is a critical function within the organisation, responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and governance of models across credit, finance, and fraud risk domains. The unit provides oversight, technical challenge, and assurance to support sound decision-making and regulatory compliance. We are seeking an experienced Data Science professional to join as a Model Validation Lead. In this role, you will provide technical expertise and leadership in the validation of advanced AI and ML models, while guiding and mentoring analysts within the team. You will be responsible for the design and execution of independent validations, the development of challenger models, and ensuring adherence to governance standards.This role requires strong technical modelling capabilities, the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, and the professional maturity to influence outcomes in a complex and evolving environment. 

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide subject matter expertise, oversight and guidance with regards to the technical review and validation of models used in the organisation, particularly machine learning models.
  • Ensure appropriate model governance and model risk management processes and standards are in place in order to manage model risk, improve and optimise model methodologies and usage.
  • Lead and deliver independent validations across a range of models, including credit risk, operational optimisation, financial crime, and marketing campaigns.
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship to analysts, supporting skills development and professional growth.
  • Design and implement challenger models using advanced machine learning methods.
  • Research current and new machine learning algorithms to ensure proposed models are fit for purpose and market best practice is being followed.
  • Ensure models meet governance, regulatory, and internal risk standards.
  • Partner with model development teams and business stakeholders to provide effective challenge and assurance.
  • Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of model validation methodologies, frameworks, and best practices.

What We Are Looking For

  • Have 6+ years of proven experience in model development in the field of Data Science and ideally direct model validation or review experience.
  • Strong technical expertise in tree-based methods, neural networks, clustering, anomaly detection, and other advanced statistical or machine learning techniques.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and emerging technologies such as large language models is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior analysts, identifying skills gaps and supporting development.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively across multiple teams and disciplines.
  • Able to design and deliver end-to-end on all but the most complex ML projects without supervision.
  • Data mining for use in analyses and predictive modelling.
  • Have had own model(s) reviewed and validated or directly validated models in the past.

About The Role

What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum of 2-3 years in risk management, operational resilience or business continuity experience.

  • Proficient in SAP, Process Mapping, CRM platforms such as Salesforce, Power BI, and core banking systems.

About The Role/Team

Our Model Risk & Insights function plays a central role in driving responsible and compliant banking practices. The function’s structure enhances independence, transparency, and oversight, while providing strong support for model risk management across the bank. You’ll be part of a highly skilled team reporting directly to the Head of Model Risk and Insights, with strong collaboration across validation, modelling, and risk teams. We are seeking a Lead: Model Governance, Monitoring & Oversight to lead and drive our governance, compliance, and oversight processes across the bank’s model landscape. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all models are not only fully compliant with regulatory requirements but also continue to deliver sustainable business value. In this capacity, you will serve as a key link between technical model validation and broader governance, monitoring, and compliance functions, ensuring alignment with Basel, IFRS 9, and RDARR (BCBS 239) standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead responsibilities: Own the governance, monitoring, and oversight of adherence to the Model Risk Policy and Model Risk Management Processes & Standards. Maintain currency of standards; lead annual reviews/updates of key artefacts (e.g., Model Risk Policy, MTSC Charter, Validation Standards). Drive resolution of validation outputs with modelling teams and ensure execution of appropriate actions. Build and embed frameworks, practices, and routines—including robust records of discussions and approvals.
  • Model oversight, reporting & escalation: Oversee remediation of models identified as risk; ensure risks are recorded, actioned, and reported per policy. Classify materiality, manage timelines, and escalate as needed. Engage with development teams to set action plans and verify evidence of closure and compliance. Optimize JIRA Service Desk and ensure effective reporting.
  • Model maintenance: Oversee model inventory and metadata quality (e.g., in Collibra), ensuring conceptual soundness and policy compliance. Stay current with RDARR standards to maintain risk data aggregation and reporting quality; implement data quality processes, training, and compliance monitoring.
  • Model monitoring & analysis: Design and implement a structured monitoring framework post‑deployment. Define performance metrics, thresholds, and monitoring plans with model owners; track performance/usage and escalate deterioration or non‑compliance. Support periodic review/recalibration and ensure documentation of results; integrate insights into model risk reporting with clear recommendations.
  • MTSC support: Plan and manage weekly MTSC sessions, ensuring stakeholders are prepared and documentation meets standards. Maintain governance records, track action items to timely completion, provide updates to stakeholders, and lead meetings/presentations as required. Conduct technical reviews of model documentation for compliance with the Model Risk Policy.

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years’ experience in model risk management, quantitative analysis, or decision science, with practical exposure to end-to-end model development, predictive modelling, and a variety of modelling techniques.
  • Banking Expertise: Solid understanding of banking regulations (Basel, IFRS 9, CBS 239, RDARR principles).
  • Governance Knowledge: Strong background in model governance, validation, monitoring, or oversight functions.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with model and data governance tools (e.g., Calibra), data monitoring, and reporting (Power BI).

Credit Risk Oversight Manager

Purpose Statement
