Human Capital Business Partner – SPARK Schools Support

Purpose of the role:

The Human Capital Business Partner (HCBP) plays a strategic role in supporting SPARK Schools’ mission to drive student achievement by fostering an environment in which employees can excel. As a key contributor to the human capital team, the HCBP ensures efficient human capital processes and compliance, while actively supporting line managers and employees in achieving high performance. The role requires a balance of strategic guidance, strong administration, and employee relations expertise, with a focus on recruitment, training, development, and organisational growth.

The HCBP acts as a trusted advisor to leadership, facilitating a positive employee experience, supporting the development of organisational capability, and fostering a culture of “A-team players.” This role is generalist but demands a proactive, consultative approach to human capital management and organisational success.

Directly Reports to: Head of Human Capital

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Partnership and Organisational Development

  • Collaborate with school and operational leadership to identify workforce needs, ensure the effective alignment of human capital strategies with organisational goals, and support the development of a high-performing culture.
  • Provide strategic input on human capital planning, including workforce forecasting, talent needs, and resource allocation.
  • Contribute to leadership discussions on organisational design and change management initiatives, ensuring alignment with the school’s long-term goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to understand and address human capital needs.

2. Administration, Data, and Reporting

  • Prepare and analyse weekly, monthly, and quarterly HR reports, including employee metrics, turnover rates, and compliance reports.
  • Maintain and update the IR Database, ensuring accuracy in performance management tracking and process compliance.
  • Collect, interpret, and present HR data to provide insights for improving organisational performance and compliance.
  • Manage physical and digital filing systems in accordance with Department of Employment and Labour requirements.

3. Talent Acquisition and Recruitment Support

  • Collaborate with hiring managers and the Recruitment Team to ensure accurate, up-to-date job descriptions across school operational and educator roles.
  • Participate in the recruitment process and support interview panels as needed.
  • Educate hiring teams on best practices in recruitment, including competency-based selection, fair candidate evaluation, and avoidance of unconscious bias.

4. Training and Development

  • Identify training needs and recommend opportunities to foster skill development within teams, providing insights to the Head of HC.
  • Develop and facilitate training on HC policies, employee relations, and compliance, ensuring that leaders have the tools to manage effectively.
  • Manage employee induction and onboarding processes, ensuring thorough completion and compliance with company standards.
  • Partner with school leaders to ensure training records are kept accurately and regularly submitted.

5. Employee and Labour Relations

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for employee relations matters, providing guidance on labour law, disciplinary procedures, grievances, and dispute resolution in compliance with statutory requirements and best practices.
  • Coach line managers on labour relations policies and conflict resolution techniques to strengthen their management capabilities.
  • Lead investigations, draft documentation, and oversee the resolution of ER/IR cases, maintaining compliance and minimising legal risk.
  • Ensure fair and consistent application of discipline across the organisation, escalating concerns to protect the company’s interests.
  • Support line managers in identifying and implementing measures to enhance productivity and employee engagement.

6. Employment Equity and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with Employment Equity (EE) requirements, coordinating EE forum meetings and supporting the submission of EE plans and reports.
  • Contribute to BBBEE submissions and compliance initiatives, supporting company diversity goals.
  • Liaise with the Department of Employment and Labour on compliance issues and handle inspections as required.

7. Performance Management

  • Support line managers in administering performance management processes, ensuring they are objective, measurable, and aligned with organisational standards.
  • Provide guidance on setting KPIs, conducting performance reviews, and managing performance improvement plans.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a human capital or HR generalist role, ideally in an education or non-profit setting.
  • Proven expertise in employee relations, labour law, recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, particularly SAGE 300, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of South African employment laws, including Labour Relations Act, EE Act, and BBBEE.

Requirements

Reports To: Chief Information Officer

Responsibilities:

  • Solve new and challenging data problems across the SPARK Schools ecosystem, including establishing a single source of truth, data management, and defining organisational data processes.
  • Partner with business units to scope and prioritise projects, maintain infrastructure, and drive data-driven decision-making across departments.
  • Build and run end-to-end Azure data pipelines (Data Factory, Databricks, ADLS Gen2, Azure SQL), implementing orchestration, scheduling, and dependency management.
  • Design and implement modern data warehouse solutions (Kimball modelling, conformed dimensions, SCD Type-2, incremental/CDC patterns).
  • Deliver enterprise-grade Power BI solutions at scale, including dataset modelling, DAX optimisation, RLS/OLS, dataflows, deployment pipelines, and administration.
  • Apply engineering best practices: Git-based CI/CD (Azure DevOps), Infrastructure-as-Code (ARM templates), automation/runbooks, and environment promotion.
  • Ensure data quality, governance, and compliance (validation tests, lineage, POPIA/GDPR, monitoring and alerting).
  • Optimise performance and cost: query tuning (SQL & Spark), storage/compute optimisation, and ensuring reliability/observability.
  • Mentor and support other analysts, simplify complex topics for non-technical audiences, and provide ad-hoc analyses when required.

Qualifications and Criteria:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and criteria:

  • Completed relevant bachelor’s degree in mathematics, engineering, computer science, or another relevant field. Master’s degree preferable.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience as a Data Analyst — 2 of which must be in a Senior Data Analyst role.
  • Expert knowledge of SQL.
  • Expert level usage of BI tools (Power BI & Excel/Google Sheets).
  • Proven experience in Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Delta Lake, ADLS Gen2, and Azure SQL.
  • Strong knowledge of data modelling (Kimball, conformed dimensions, SCD Type-2, incremental/CDC).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps), Infrastructure-as-Code (ARM), and automation.
  • Experience in data governance, testing, compliance, and monitoring.
  • Analytics experience across multiple company domains such as Product, Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Finance.
  • Experience with web analytics and optimisation tools (Mixpanel, Google Analytics, etc.).
  • Experience in designing and setting up experiments to analyze the impact of new products and features a plus (hypothesis testing, multivariate analysis, or Bayesian).
  • Experience working with developers.
  • Experience with databases.
  • Familiarity with version-control systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Experience with a BI transformation tool is a plus.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Purpose:

To manage and execute payroll functions using Sage 300, ensuring timely and accurate payment of salaries and benefits for approximately 1,500 employees. The Payroll Bookkeeper will also support HC and finance with tax submissions, reconciliations, reporting, and compliance with South African labour and tax laws. 

Reports to: Head of Human Capital

Responsibilities:

  • Full end-to-end payroll processing for multiple payrolls in SAGE 300 People
  • Process payroll for high volumes of employees
  • Capture hours from systems, calculate wages, overtime, bonuses & deductions
  • Maintain and update employee master data
  • Ensure seamless integration with HC & timekeeping systems (manual & biometric)
  • Manage bulk imports/exports of time, earnings, and deductions
  • Reconcile payrolls before finalisation
  • Ensure full compliance with relevant legislation
  • Submit all statutory returns: EMP201, EMP501, UIF declarations
  • Compile accurate payroll reports for:
  • Internal management
  • Client billing & invoice reconciliation
  • Payroll trend analysis

Requirements

Qualifications and Criteria:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and criteria:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of payroll processing experience, specifically with Sage 300.
  • Advanced SAGE 300 People training is highly advantageous
  • Expert-level experience in SAGE 300 People (Payroll Module)
  • Experience in processing payrolls (using SAGE 300 People) is advantageous
  • Advanced experience with SAGE 300 People (HR Module) is advantageous
  • Advanced Excel skills are essential
  • Excellent English communication skills (verbal, reading & writing)
  • Able to meet strict deadlines & work independently

ABOUT THE ROLE

Purpose:

The role of the Compliance Officer is to manage the organisation’s compliance, health and safety portfolio across the organisation. This includes the implementation and adherence of relevant policies and procedures; risk mitigation; continuous improvement, and on-going statutory compliance. The role is also responsible for collaborating closely with the School Leadership and Operations Team(s), while championing the SPARK culture and brand in all stakeholder interactions.

Reports to: Property Operations Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all health & safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations are implemented and adhered to by relevant stakeholders across all the school sites and support office to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Periodically review, update and communicate health & safety strategy, policies, regulations and SOPs to ensure relevance, on-going compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Stay up-to-date with new or revised legislation pertaining to health, safety and
  • welfare.
  • Ensure a safe workplace environment without risk to health by providing expert advice on health and safety matters.
  • Oversee that all Health & Safety files are up to date and in compliance with legislation.
  • Undertake comprehensive quarterly health and safety internal audits. Document, file and share internal audit reports with the School Leadership and Property Operations Manager.
  • Assess each site’s audit rating and assist to action any non-compliance items / recommendations until completion and improvement. This may include delegating responsibility to relevant stakeholders regarding health and safety matters.
  • Create useful content for Safety Toolbox Talks, and ensure that they are conducted across all sites on a quarterly basis.
  • Coordinate with site leadership to ensure emergency preparedness and that fire drills are conducted.
  • Manage the required health and safety training with the appointed external provider.
  • Manage and attend to logged tickets within agreed SLA timeframe.
  • Ensure that all compliance certificates (incl. each site’s Health Certificate) are in place and valid. This includes keeping the relevant trackers up-to-date and documenting reasons for non-compliance or validity.
  • Manage license and registration renewals – ensure that the relevant tracker is up-to-date and renewals have been proactively planned.
  • Understand, commit to and deliver on the assigned applicable area of responsibility and duties as appointed by the 16(2) in terms of the OHS Act Section
  • Monitor campus emergencies, including equipment breakdowns, malfunctions and alarm calls in conjunction with security companies.
  • Respond to emergency situations or other urgent issues involving facilities and/or equipment. This may include attending to emergencies outside of working hours (e.g. break-ins).
  • Conduct inspections together with the relevant department (Department of Labour & Employment; Department of Health) inspector and implement recommended changes.
  • Ensure that all employees are aware of their respective responsibilities regarding security, health and safety in order to maintain optimised awareness and mitigation.
  • Document, investigate and report on all incidents, accidents, complaints, criminal activities, cases of ill-health and/or injuries on the sites/properties.
  • Post investigation, make recommendations for improvement and oversee the implementation of such improvements to ensure security, health and safety is maintained.
  • Report any injuries and/or accidents to the Department of Labour (DoEL) within seven (7) days and manage injury on duty claims with the Compensation Fund.
  • Report any incidents of criminal nature to the appropriate authorities in a timely manner.
  • Develop, implement and communicate a crisis management plan for all sites/offices across the organisation. This includes ensuring that all employees understand the process clearly.
  • Work closely with the School Leadership Teams/Site Section 8.2 Appointees to ensure that the required health and safety checklists are complete, procedures are followed and protocols are administered to the required standard.
  • Obtain a Letter of Good Standing with PSIRA and COIDA on an annual basis.
  • Establish, implement and/or communicate a structured programme of health and safety training throughout the organisation.
  • Ensure effective management of supplier (service provider) relationships in line with business objectives and signed supplier agreements.
  • Visit each site on a monthly basis.

  • Degree in a related field.
  • Occupational Health & Safety training.
  • 3 – 5 Years of experience in a related field.
  • Detailed knowledge of regulatory compliance (OHS)
  • Detailed knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Purpose:

The Contracts & Projects Manager will be responsible for managing contractual relationships with IT vendors and coordinating the implementation of IT services and solutions across internal departments. This dual-role bridges the gap between contractual oversight and operational delivery, ensuring projects are executed on time, within scope, and in line with contractual terms.

Reports to: Interim CIO

Responsibilities:

Contract Management:

  • Draft, negotiate, and manage contracts with IT vendors and service providers.
  • Monitor vendor compliance with contractual terms, SLAs, and regulatory requirements (e.g. POPIA, B-BBEE).
  • Maintain a central repository of vendor contracts and related documentation.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews with vendors and address non-compliance or disputes.

Project Management:

  • Plan and coordinate IT implementation projects involving third-party vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • Define project scope, timelines, budgets, and resource allocations.
  • Track progress, manage risks, and resolve issues to ensure successful delivery.
  • Ensure alignment between vendor deliverables and internal business objectives.

Stakeholder Coordination:

  • Liaise between IT vendors and business units to ensure effective communication and change management.
  • Facilitate user acceptance testing, training, and onboarding for new systems.
  • Prepare and present project reports and updates to senior leadership.

Requirements

  • 5+ years’ experience in project management, vendor management, or contracts administration.

  • Project management certification (e.g. PMP, PRINCE2) is essential.
  • Experience with B-BBEE compliance and vendor assessments.

Preferred Experience:

  • Exposure to IT service delivery, ERP, cloud services, or software deployment projects.
