Fleet Technician

Job Description

A Fleet Technician is responsible for ensuring the mechanical, technical, and cosmetic integrity of the fleet to support safe, compliant, and efficient distribution operations. The role involves inspections, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, breakdown support, and coordination with service providers, while upholding Pedros People values and leadership principles.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Champion Pedros People values and leadership principles across the business, including new hires.
2. Ensure the overall mechanical, technical, refrigeration, and cosmetic condition of the fleet, escalating defects, damages, or non-compliance.
3. Conduct daily, weekly, and ad-hoc vehicle inspections in line with SOPs, including mechanical, cosmetic, refrigeration, tail lift, and tyre inspections.
4. Complete, maintain, and submit all required vehicle checklists, inspection reports, and fleet documentation accurately and timeously.
5. Perform preventive maintenance activities and minor repairs, including bulb and fuse replacements, fluid top-ups, and basic mechanical tasks to reduce downtime and avoid unnecessary call-outs.
6. Ensure refrigeration systems are fully operational, including jump-starting fridges when required and recording weekly fridge hours.
7. Respond to vehicle breakdowns promptly and assist with roadside or depot-based troubleshooting within acceptable timeframes.
8. Carry out cosmetic inspections, verify vehicle cleanliness against the Truck Wash Schedule, and immediately escalate new damages.
9. Inspect and ensure correct operation of tail lifts, tyres (tread, pressure, condition, brand, and spares), and all safety-critical components.
10. Ensure all vehicles are fuelled before returning to the Distribution Centre.
11. Coordinate, monitor, and verify repair and maintenance work completed by service providers to ensure quality and compliance.
12. Maintain adequate stock levels of consumables, including replacement bulbs, fluids, and basic parts.
13. Ensure bulkheads, standby electricity pods, cables, and related equipment are present, operational, and in good condition.
14. Assist with requisitions, vehicle movements, and vehicle or driver testing when required.
15. Submit completed check sheets, inspection reports, and supporting documentation to the Fleet Controller or relevant manager.

Requirements:

1. Matric plus relevant technical qualification or trade certification in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or a related field.
2. Strong understanding of vehicle mechanics, refrigeration systems, and fleet maintenance practices.
3. Proven experience in fleet inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs.
4. Experience working with service providers and managing repair quality.
5. Proficient in record keeping, checklist completion, and compliance reporting.
6. Code 14 Drivers Licence + PrDP with minimum 2 Years Experience
7. 4 Years Experience working on HGV
8. Supervisory skills

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Create, execute and oversee work schedules for routine maintenance tasks, inspections, and repairs of equipment and facilities
2. Ensure that all equipment, machinery, and systems are well-maintained and operating at maximum capacity
3. Maintain detailed records of all services, maintenance, and repairs carried out on equipment
4. Ensure all maintenance activities adhere to regulatory standards, company policies, and safety protocols
5. Conduct regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and systems to identify maintenance needs
6. Plan and organize repair activities to minimize downtime, ensuring that logistics operations are not disrupted
7. Manage inventory of maintenance supplies, parts, and tools, ensuring that essential materials are readily available for ongoing maintenance tasks
8. Respond quickly and efficiently to emergency situations such as equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, or safety hazards
9. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all maintenance activities, including work orders, maintenance schedules, and completed repairs
10. Perform repairs on electric appliances and equipment as needed, ensuring they meet operational standards
11. Assess building systems and plan work assignments and project schedules for necessary repairs or improvements
12. Conduct routine facility inspections to determine potential problems and maintenance needs

REQUIREMENTS: 

1. Matric
2. Certificate/Diploma in Electrical , Trade test, plumbing , General maintenance
3. Proven experience in a maintenance supervisory role, preferably within a logistics or industrial setting
4. Experienced with electrical work (light and heavy duty)
5. Experienced with basic plumbing
6. Experienced with general maintenance
7. Strong knowledge of maintenance practices, equipment systems, and regulatory standards
8. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively and efficiently
9. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
10. Excellent communication and leadership abilities
11. Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in maintenance and logistics
