Purpose of Role: The Associate Principal drives high scholar achievement, a positive scholar and staff culture, operation efficiency and an engaged school community by providing excellent management, coaching and leadership to school staff. The Assistant Principal is integral to the SPARK Schools culture and our commitment to rigorous, engaging learning experiences for our scholars.
Strategic Leadership:
- Working with the Headmaster and Senior Leadership Team to shape the school’s vision, aims, and objectives, and to develop the policies that will achieve them.
Academic Leadership:
- Overseeing the curriculum, assessment, and teaching and learning strategies to ensure high standards of education and student achievement. This may involve monitoring student progress, evaluating the effectiveness of teaching methods, and supporting staff development.

- Drive the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum, encouraging scholars to engage with global challenges and solutions.
Support Matric Readiness and Exam Preparation:
- Lead efforts to prepare scholars for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, including coordinating mock exams, study sessions, and targeted academic support for Grade 12 scholars.
- Ensure that scholars are equipped with strong study skills, time management techniques, and a clear understanding of NSC requirements to meet a 100% pass rate target.
Scholar Culture and Behaviour Management:
- Leading and developing the school’s pastoral care program, including student well-being, behaviour management, and support services.
- Upholding behavior management processes and policies
- Ensure that scholar culture initiatives are held in school to uphold a positive, proud scholar culture that aligns with the CQ curriculum and SPARK core values
- Oversee the development and implementation of individualised behaviour support plans for scholars struggling to meet behavioural expectations, focusing on restorative justice approaches and fostering personal responsibility.
- Work collaboratively with the Assistant Principals and Counseling Teams to ensure a robust system of scholar support, including mental health resources and social-emotional development programs.
- Promote a culture of academic rigor, responsibility, and continuous improvement, ensuring that scholars take ownership of their learning.
- Lead initiatives that focus on character development alongside academic growth, reinforcing SPARK Schools’ core values (Service, Persistence, Achievement, Responsibility, Kindness) within the academic context.
- Lead the scholar support team to ensure that academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support systems are integrated and effectively address the needs of all scholars.

Staff Management:
- Supporting and motivating staff, contributing to recruitment and retention, and promoting a positive and collaborative working environment.
- Onboarding new staff members on vision, mission, model of the school
- Lead mid-managers in school to drive implementation in all areas of the school
- Implement rigorous systems for monitoring and evaluation, ensuring continuous improvement across both academic and non-academic areas of the school.
- Hold staff and scholars accountable for high performance standards, with regular check-ins and review meetings to assess progress toward school-wide goals.
School Operations:
- Ensuring the smooth running of the school, including resource management, and the effective implementation of school policies.
- DBE and UMALUSI compliance
- Ensure all stakeholders are aligned to and uphold operational procedures and protocols.
Stakeholder Management:
- Maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders, including students, parents, staff, and the wider community
- Lead Parent Conference Meetings or Community Meetings
- Actively engage parents, families, and the wider community in the educational process, creating a strong support network around each scholar to enhance accountability and achievement.
Deputizing:

Responsibilities:
- Implement school wide systems and procedures (for example, arrivals, dismissals, cover timetables, study hall timetables, and examination administration) to facilitate student achievement and align with SPARK Schools network -wide best practice.
- Support scholar achievement by setting clear and high expectations for excellent facilitation and monitoring in all innovation hubs.
- Maintain a regular schedule of observations in all the innovation hubs and observation review meetings with blended learning facilitators to ensure that they can successfully plan online courses, execute monitoring and tracking, and implement SPARK Schools’ culture and behaviour management techniques.
- Facilitate professional development for operational staff & Blended Learning Facilitators on the implementation of schoolwide systems, as well as personal and professional competencies. Purpose of Role:
SPARK Schools teachers drive student achievement by maintaining high expectations for classroom culture, behaviour, and academic growth for all scholars. SPARK Schools Senior Phase Mathematics Educators are content specialists in English language and literacy. SPARK high school Senior Phase educators equip scholars with the knowledge and tools required for matriculation and work collaboratively in leading an integrated inquiry-based curriculum.
Senior Phase Educators are integral to the SPARK Schools’ culture and our commitment to rigorous, engaging learning experiences for our scholars.
Responsibilities:
- Plan for, teach and co-teach face to face and distance lessons for and deliver academic and clubs lessons.
- Collaborate with grade level and content area partners to develop rigorous, engaging learning experiences and to create and implement high quality individualised behaviour and learning plans for scholars.
- Participate actively in all scheduled professional development sessions.
- Develop and administer formative and termly assessments to track student progress and analyse the data for student growth for all scholars to meet the required proficiency ratings.
- Submit and analyse scholar data in order to track progress and intervene when necessary.
- Lead scholar social and emotional development through CQ (Character Quotient) sessions and reflections.
- Plan for, deliver and monitor programmes to support low performing scholars, or extend high performing scholars.
- Participate in place-based education where required within mandated national curriculum or as part of SPARK Schools curriculum enrichment.
- Participate in career and tertiary pathways education where required as part of scholar culture and character development.
- Develop SPARK culture and implement behaviour management strategies.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with colleagues, parents and other stakeholders.
- Conduct self in a professional manner at all SPARK Schools events and to all stakeholders.
- Nurture a high achieving work environment where all scholars feel genuinely valued and supported.
- Promote the vision and mission of SPARK Schools to staff, scholars, families, and the greater community.
- Implement strategies implemented by the Crisis Management team. Adhere to the child protection, anti-bullying and health and safety policy.
- Attend Saturday events and parent community meetings.
- Submit student results data when required.
Requirements
Qualifications and Criteria:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and criteria:
- English language fluency
- Completed B.Ed or PGCE degree in Mathematics Senior phase or Mathematics FET
- 1 – 2 Years teaching experience in a High School setting
- SACE registration
- Clear/Clean criminal record

Purpose of Role:
The Principal drives student achievement by leading a team of excellent staff to prepare SPARK scholars for university and beyond. The Principal sets a rigorous vision for student achievement and implements strategic steps to lead staff, families, students, and the greater community to fulfill that vision. The Principal collaborates with the Assistant Principal(s) and Operations and Blended Learning Manager to uphold high expectations for school culture, student achievement, and professional development.
The Principal drives decision making within the SPARK Schools model in terms of the instructional program and school operations to ensure that every SPARK scholar is academically successful and an excellent representative of the SPARK core values. The Principal is integral to the SPARK Schools “culture” and our commitment to rigorous, engaging learning experiences for our scholars.
Responsibilities:
Drive Student Achievement and Success:
- Establish a rigorous, personalized academic vision with clear, ambitious goals that aim for a 100% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
- Ensure that scholars meet all matriculation requirements, with tailored support for those at risk of underperforming, using data-driven interventions based on real-time assessment data.
Lead Data-Driven Instructional Excellence:
- Use quantitative and qualitative data to drive personalized learning and interventions, ensuring that every scholar has a tailored path to success.
- Implement advanced technology-enhanced learning strategies (blended learning, AI-driven tools, etc.) to support academic excellence, study habits, and scholar autonomy.
Enhance School Culture and Scholar Engagement:
- Foster a school culture of high achievement, emotional resilience, and leadership through programs that promote both academic excellence and social-emotional learning.
- Ensure scholar engagement through leadership programs, mentorship opportunities, and initiatives that build scholar responsibility and ownership of their learning journey.
Promote Professional Growth and Instructional Leadership:
- Facilitate continuous professional development for staff through coaching cycles, leadership development programs, and termly evaluations to ensure excellence in teaching and instructional leadership.
- Ensure that the teaching staff is fully equipped to integrate blended learning models and innovative instructional practices into their classrooms, supporting both academic mastery and critical thinking.
Manage Scholar Behavior and Support Systems:
- Oversee the development and implementation of individualized behavior support plans for scholars struggling to meet behavioral expectations, focusing on restorative justice approaches and fostering personal responsibility.
- Work collaboratively with the Assistant Principals and Counseling Teams to ensure a robust system of scholar support, including mental health resources and social-emotional development programs.
Collaborate with Stakeholders for Holistic Scholar Support:
- Actively engage parents, families, and the wider community in the educational process, creating a strong support network around each scholar to enhance accountability and achievement.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with the Department of Basic Education and other stakeholders to ensure the school’s adherence to academic standards and regulatory requirements.
Ensure Matric and Umalusi Accreditation Readiness:
- Lead the preparation and administration of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams and Umalusi accreditation, ensuring full compliance with examination standards.
- Drive efforts to maintain the highest levels of matriculation success, including mock exams, scholar study plans, and targeted academic support programs for Grade 12 scholars.
Operational Leadership and Financial Management:
- Oversee the school’s operational management, including budgeting, resource allocation, and ensuring that the school operates efficiently and effectively.
- Lead the school leadership team in monitoring and evaluating operational practices, ensuring they align with SPARK Schools’ mission and vision.
Foster Innovation in Educational Practice:
- Promote the adoption of innovative educational practices that reflect current global trends, such as project-based learning, technology integration, and global competencies to ensure that SPARK scholars are prepared for both university and careers.
- Drive the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum, encouraging scholars to engage with global challenges and solutions.
Accountability and Continuous Improvement:
- Implement rigorous systems for monitoring and evaluation, ensuring continuous improvement across both academic and non-academic areas of the school.
- Hold staff and scholars accountable for high performance standards, with regular check-ins and review meetings to assess progress toward school-wide goals.
Requirements
Qualifications and Criteria:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and criteria:
Experience
- At least 3-4 years of excellent classroom instruction in a high school context
- At least two years in school leadership
- Experience and practice with labour laws
- Experience and practice with Umalusi accreditation and National Senior Certificate examination administration
Preferred qualifications and criteria
- English language fluency
- Grade 12 Certificate
- Completed B.Ed or PGCE degree (SP & FET)
- Honours or a Masters qualification are advantageous
- SACE registration
- Clear criminal record
