The ARC- Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC– OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria:

SENIOR RESEARCHER – EPV

Salary (R586 283 – R879 422 pa) All-inclusive Remuneration Package

Key Performance Areas:

  • Curation of the National Tick Collection,
  • National Tick Collection maintenance, and compliance with National Science Collections Facilities standards,
  • Research on tick taxonomy and systematics using both classic taxonomy, geometrics and molecular systematic approaches,
  • Tick distribution modelling,
  • Tick identification diagnostic services,
  • Leverage competitive research funding as independent researcher,
  • Act as line manager for, and be responsible for Personnel Development of subordinates working in the project,
  • Train and transfer knowledge to students, field veterinary officials and farmers,
  • Publication of research in appropriate journals and presentation at relevant national and/or international scientific conferences,
  • Participate in Programme and Institute-related administrative and other duties as requested by the line manager.

Requirements:

  • PhD degree with specialization in taxonomy and systematics (or equivalent),
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ research experience in a similar environment,
  • NRF rating (advantage),
  • An ability to execute and participate in multi-disciplinary research projects, evidence of peer-reviewed publications (minimum of 10). These publications have to show evidence of classic taxonomy, morphometric, molecular systematics and distribution modelling,
  • Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds will be an advantage,
  • Evidence of student training,
  • Excellent language and communication skills (written and verbal),
  • Must be able to work independently and reliable.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Salary (R247 537 – R371 307 pa) all-inclusive remuneration package

Key Performance Areas:

  • Receive and process samples brought for testing in the PCR laboratory,
  • Extract nucleic acids (RNA/DNA) from various sample sources, i.e., tissues, swabs, blood, etc, from animal sources,
  • Perform various PCR-based tests according to set protocols,
  • Routine testing of samples using PCR,
  • Implement quality assurance in accord with ISO17025,
  • Training of new staff and visitors to the lab.

Requirements:

  • National Diploma in Veterinary Technology or equivalent,
  • BTech in Veterinary Technology will be an added advantage,
  • Registration with South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).

HEAVY MACHINE OPERATOR X 2

Salary (R142 894 – R214 343 pa) all-inclusive remuneration package

Key Performance Areas

  • Operate the effluent plant by following the standard operational procedure (SOP) as guided, identify improvements and get approval from supervisor thereof, operate the internal incinerators whenever carcases, clogged used filters, dried effluent as well as any solids materials suitable to be incinerated for disposal are available,
  • Operate the mobile forklift for loading carcases whilst ensuring battery is accordingly charged to correct levels timeously,
  • Daily inspection of steam supply and pressure levels, exhaust fans, water supply, compressed air supply as well as normal fresh air supply to meet operational standards and correct or report noncompliance,
  • Any other ad hoc work as and when required especially within all the containment building of the BSL03 laboratories,
  • Basic to advanced housekeeping of the boiler house,
  • Ensure continuous supply of coal into boiler fire chamber,
  • Daily & weekly blowdowns and soot blowing, and ensure sufficient treated boiler water supply,
  • Be able to identify potential problems with the boiler and report such immediately,
  • Adhere to strict biosecurity regulations and all OHS regulations.

Requirements:

  • Senior Certificate,
  • Valid driver’s license will be added advantage,
  • Knowledge of applicable safety laws related to Boiler,
  • Good verbal and written communication skills,
  • Attention to detail and highly safety-conscious,
  • Compulsory to obtain forklift license within a year after employment confirmation.

ARTISAN ASSISTANT

Salary (R123 816 – R185 727 pa) all-inclusive remuneration package

Key Performance Areas:

  • Assist Artisans within Facilities and the Institute with maintenance of asset and infrastructure so to extend their lifespan,
  • Replacement of leaking water pipes, geysers and taps,
  • Cleaning of all building gutters and down pipes,
  • Fixing of leaking roofs and general maintenance,
  • Cleaning of sewerage pumps,
  • Cleaning of all storm water drainage systems,
  • General maintenance of infrastructure,
  • Maintenance on irrigation system,
  • Brick lying and concrete work,
  • Adhoc work activities within the organization.

Requirements:

  • Senior Certificate,
  • Driver’s licence will be an advantage,
  • (3 )Three to (5)Five years’ experience in general maintenance of buildings and furniture,
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal),
  • A team player with the ability to work independently and accurately
