Law Lecturer
School of Professional Accounting – Cape Town (Remote)
Applications Close: 31 July 2025
Background to the institution and the Position
Milpark Education is a Higher Education provider that provides trusted, online learning journeys in South Africa. In March 2023 Milpark’s School of Professional Accounting launched a new BCom in Accounting that is forward thinking, innovative and future proof.
The Position
The School of Professional Accounting is seeking a qualified and experienced academic to join its BCom in Accounting team within the Undergraduate Department as a Law Lecturer in the Risk and Governance Theme Team. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for delivering first-year law modules, tailored specifically to meet the needs of accounting students on the BCom in Accounting.
As part of the Year 1 academic team, the successful candidate will also contribute to the delivery of the foundational six-week module introducing students to the world of business, ethics, digital skills and reflection.
Experience in an online learning platform is ideal but not a requirement of the role.
All staff in the school work remotely and therefore, applications from anywhere in South Africa will be accepted.
Some important aspects to take note of, given that our working environment differs from a standard educational institution in a number of ways:
1. Research expectation
This role, along with all our current permanent academic positions, does not carry with it an expectation for the performance of any formal research. Learning and reflecting is an important part of our values and we seek to apply best practice in all that we do. However, our focus is not on formal research output and, as such, our systems and processes are not designed to either support or reward individuals committed to traditional research.
2. After-hours availability
Our programmes are designed to be flexible and accommodate students who find themselves in a wide range of circumstances, specifically including working students. As a result, we offer syncronous, online live sessions to our students after-hours on a weekly basis – these occur between 5:30pm and 7:30pm on weeknights (Monday to Thursday). Additionally, academic staff members are expected to be available for after-hours online, and one-on-one consultations with students for a few hours each week, either in the evenings or early in the mornings before working hours.
3. Remote working and travel expectations
The majority of our team works entirely online, as our courses are completely online. Therefore, all members of staff are expected to have a stable and reliable source of access to the internet, a backup plan in case of loadshedding and a suitable home office environment. (IT equipment, including a laptop, screen and other essentials will be provided by Milpark.)
Additionally, the team gathers in person in Cape Town roughly 4 times per year and so members of staff located elsewhere in the country are expected to travel to Cape Town for those meetings, which may require up to three nights away at a time. (The cost of this travel is covered by Milpark.)
4. Salary bands
We seek to compensate our staff fairly and remunerate them in line with market-related rates. That being said, we believe that working in our team has much to offer in terms of job fulfillment and team culture which cannot be captured in monetary terms.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include:
- Delivery of first-year law modules in the Risk and Governance theme
- Co-delivery of the Introduction to Professional Accounting Studies module as part of the Year 1 academic team.
- Working collaboratively with all staff of the department
- Material development and maintenance
- Live online session delivery to large groups of students
- Small group consultations with students
- Assessment setting, marking and administration
- Fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel encouraged to participate, ask questions, and explore complex legal concepts applicable to professional accountants.
Professional Development, Collaboration and Engagement:
- Stay abreast of developments in the relevant fields of law, risk and governance and continuously update and enhance knowledge and skills through professional development activities.
- Collaborate with colleagues within the School of Professional Accounting and across other departments or disciplines to promote interdisciplinary learning and research initiatives.
- Engage with industry partners, professional associations, and regulatory bodies to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the accounting profession.
Education & Experience Requirements
- NQF level 8 degree in law or a closely related field from a recognized university.
- Demonstrated expertise in relevant areas of law, risk, governance and/or compliance with sufficient experience that intersects with accounting and finance (e.g., business law, corporate law, tax law, etc.).
- Previous experience teaching law, risk, auditing and/or governance at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, preferably in a professional or vocational context.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities, with a commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and assessment outcomes.
- A collaborative and collegial approach to working with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders.
Key Selection Criteria
- Technical competence in law, risk, governance and/or compliance applicable to professional accountants at an undergraduate level
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- A passion for developing students through genuine care
- An industrious and gregarious attitude with the ability to learn, solve problems, innovate and complete tasks without close supervision
- Emotional intelligence with an aptitude and desire to build relationships
- Applicants may come from various professional backgrounds. While a CA(SA) designation or legal qualification is advantageous, applicants with a BCom Law degree (with Accounting) or risk/governance/auditing/compliance experience in the business context are encouraged to apply
- Advanced to moderate IT competence
