Job Purpose:

We are seeking a skilled Project Manager to lead change management projects within the UJ Human Capital Management division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the change management planning, execution, and delivery of projects ensuring effective management of risks and resistance.
  • Be a part of the team to develop, implement and project manage change management strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with executives, managers, employees, and unions to ensure alignment and support of projects in the UJ Human Capital Management division.
  • Facilitate communication, engagement, and training interventions to drive change readiness.
  • Monitor and report to senior management on project progress, risks, and outcomes, whilst ensuring delivery within scope, budget, and time.
  • Be involved in the change management required to promote employee involvement, continuous improvement, and adherence to labour legislation and university policies.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) in a Business related field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in project management with a track record in human resource change management initiatives (e.g., Conditions of Service, Policies, etc.).
  • Proven experience in leading complex organisation-wide change initiatives.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Strong knowledge of project management methodologies.
  • Expertise in change management.
  • Understanding of HCM practices and information systems.
  • Facilitation, presentation, and report-writing skills.
  • Strong leadership, emotional intelligence, and ability to manage resistance and build trust.
  • Problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.

Recommendations:

This position resides in a strong teaching and research group called Structures, Geotechnics and Materials (SGM). This research group has a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students working in two well-resourced departmental laboratories, namely, the Heavy Structures Lab and Light Structures Lab. This appointment is aimed at supporting this research group and to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of structural engineering.

The Department is seeking a candidate with extensive industry experience in leading the design and construction of large civil structures. The successful candidate will also participate in academic administration, supervise the research of undergraduate and postgraduate students and develop a productive research program within their research group. As a senior staff member, he or she will also be expected to take part in the strategic planning and decision-making of the department.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of structural engineering.
  • Conducting research in the area of structural engineering.
  • Supervision of postgraduate students in structural engineering.
  • Source research fund for the SGM research group.
  • Contributing to academic and departmental administration.

Minimum requirements

  • An applicable BEng or BSc degree in civil engineering, or equivalent, recognised by  the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for registration as professional engineer.
  • A doctorate degree in a relevant engineering field, or an MEng/MSc/MPhil engineering degree combined with at least five years of directly relevant industry experience.
  • A well proven background in structural engineering, with extensive industry experience in leading the design and construction of large structures.
  • Evidence of research experience demonstrated by scholarly publications and/or postgraduate supervision.
  • An excellent academic study record in civil engineering.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Departmental Synopsis:

The Department of Metallurgy (situated on Doornfontein Campus) offers accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It is situated in the School of Mining, Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering, and the overarching Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE). The department is searching for a vibrant, dynamic, and diverse scholar who is passionate about enhancing the learning experience of students, enhancing the research profile of the department and the academic, social, and economic impact of the department’s teaching and research programmes.

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is a Department of Higher Education and Training nationally funded programme that involves recruiting a new cohort of young academics. The programme is transformative in nature and priority is given to designated candidates. Candidates must be 40 years and younger. The programme enables nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities and requires the incumbent to register for their PhD or postdoctoral studies.

Apart from presenting lectures in Powder Metallurgy to undergraduate and honours students, the appointee will be expected to actively conduct research, supervise postgraduate students, and be involved in the other activities of the Department.

Responsibilities:

In line with the Department of Higher Education and training’s nGAP, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built environment at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make a permanent appointment of a lecturer in the Department of Metallurgy. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified, and ambitious aspirant academic to contribute to and expand the faculty’s current teaching and research interests/specialisations.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the department and teach in undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department of Metallurgy. The successful candidate should demonstrate an eagerness to participate in changing the South African landscape through education.

In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:

  • Obtain a PhD in the required field, if not already held and obtained a minimum of 70% in their Masters.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Prepare and conduct practical sessions for the students.
  • Prepare and mark assignments, tests, and exams.
  • Assist with developing course material for undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research and play a leading role in teaching innovation including the use of online tools.
  • Be actively involved in core activities of the department such as teaching, research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects.
  • Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scientific and / or academic journals and deliver papers at national and international conferences.
  • Actively conduct research.

  • Obtain research funding from external funding bodies, national and international funding agencies, and industry.
  • Advance the discipline of Metallurgical Engineering through industrial work, community engagement and active participation in voluntary associations (e.g. SAIChE, SAIMM) / professional societies (e.g. ECSA);
  • Actively involved in all Departmental academic and administrative activities/duties (e.g. ECSA accreditation preparations, participation in official meetings and gatherings).

Minimum requirements

  • BTech, BEng Tech or BSc (Eng) or B Eng in Engineering Metallurgy or Material Science and Engineering related fields with background in Powder Metallurgy.
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering Metallurgy or Material Science with a minimum of 70% average pass mark.
  • Evidence of community and / or industrial involvement would be beneficial.
  • Strong commitment to good teaching and research.
  • Sound communication skills in English

  • Water lawns, trees, and plants using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans.
  • Irrigate lawns, trees, and plants.

Tools, and equipment safety

  • Makes routine adjustments and minor repairs to keep equipment in safe working order.
  • Assists in the preparation, set-up, and marking of sporting grounds and other facilities as assigned.
  • Assist in the installation and repair of ground equipment, irrigation lines, and sprinkler heads.
  • Cleans outdoor storage areas.
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of hand and power-operated garden tools and equipment, such as seeders, spreaders, edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning, shears, sprayers, spades, hoes, rakes, and mowers.
  • Operates ground maintenance equipment.

Landscaping

  • Follows planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay, sow grass, or plant flowers or foliage.
  • Decorate indoor or outdoor spaces.
  • Plant greenery to improve landscape appearance.
  • Provide information to clients about landscaping services.
  • Build, form, mix, and pour cement to form garden borders.

     Health and Safety

  • Conveying and handling tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Cleaning and workplace, workshop, and equipment, as well as removing waste.
  • Selecting, using, and maintaining basic hand tools and materials safely.
  • Maintaining basic health, safety, and environmental measures in the workplace.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping.
  • Wearing protective clothing and equipment as prescribed.

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 / NQF level 4 or equivalent qualification 
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience in garden & grounds maintenance, landscaping and sports field preparation

  • Good conflict management skills

Recommendations:

  • A valid Code 8 driver’s license
