Responsibilities:
Role Summary:
As the School Social Services and Counselor (Scholar Support Assistant Principal), you will play a crucial role in promoting the general well-being of scholars within the school. You will be responsible for creating and maintaining a school culture that values high achievement, strong character, and a love for learning. Your role encompasses various aspects, including academic excellence, behavior management, career guidance, counseling, and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. You will collaborate closely with the school leadership team, instructional staff, scholars, and families to ensure scholar success in alignment with SPARK Schools’ mission and vision.
Counseling and Support Services:
Individual Counseling:
- Providing one-on-one counseling sessions to scholars who are experiencing emotional, behavioural, or social difficulties. This can include helping scholars manage stress, anxiety, depression, grief, or anger and addressing issues related to self-esteem, relationships, and family dynamics.
Group Counseling:
- Conducting group therapy sessions to address common concerns among scholars, such as peer relationships, communication skills, conflict resolution, and coping strategies.
- Provide a supportive environment for scholars to share their experiences and learn from their peers.
- Maximize coping skills for scholars in difficult situations and offer crisis intervention strategies.
Crisis Intervention:
- Respond to immediate crises within the school environment, such as incidents of bullying, violence, or unexpected losses.
- Providing emotional support to scholars and staff during challenging times.
- Maximize coping skills for scholars in difficult situations and offer crisis intervention strategies.
Promoting Scholar Well-being and Academic Excellence:
- Plan and execute the high school transition model to facilitate a smooth scholar transition.
- Offer career guidance and support to Further Education and Training (FET) scholars.
- Drive academic excellence by providing support with subject selection, tracking progress towards matriculation, and guiding the development of exceptional scholar XC Projects.
- Implement rigorous and engaging social-emotional programs that promote character development.
Behaviour Management and Scholar Culture:
- Develop interventions and individualised behaviour plans when necessary to support scholars’ social and emotional growth.
- Use quantitative and qualitative data to inform decision-making and scholar support strategies.
- Preventive Education: Developing and delivering educational programs to promote positive mental health, social skills, conflict resolution, and overall well-being among scholars. These programs can help prevent potential issues from escalating.
- Develop personalised interventions and behaviour plans for scholars facing challenges in behaviour or academics, involving parents, teachers, and support staff in the process to ensure a holistic approach.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to ensure a holistic approach to scholar well-being, coordinating efforts to provide targeted support and interventions as needed.
Professional Development and Collaboration:
- Implement behaviour management policies and procedures that cultivate a strong and positive student culture.
- Serve as a consultant to teachers and school staff on topics related to research-based practices in response to intervention and positive behaviour support.
- Offer mentoring and guidance to teachers and staff to enhance their professional growth, providing opportunities for skill development and creating a culture of continuous learning.
- Stay updated with best practices in the field by attending workshops and conferences and participating in professional organisations.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and organised case files, including process notes and progress reports for each scholar, ensuring compliance with confidentiality and data protection regulations.
- Monitor and address school attendance issues, providing interventions for scholars who are frequently absent or skipping classes and collaborating with families to improve attendance rates and engagement.
- Set and meet specific performance objectives in collaboration with the immediate supervisor.
- Provide support during crisis events and situations.
Leadership and Staff Support:
- Lead the onboarding process for new instructional personnel, ensuring they understand the school’s culture, policies, and instructional strategies and providing ongoing support as they acclimate to their roles.
- Support instructional staff in aligning classroom instruction with the SPARK Character Quotient guidelines.
- Facilitate an assessment and data analysis cycle to identify areas for targeted instruction and strategies to close achievement gaps.
- Collaborate with the school leadership team to manage and evaluate instructional personnel.
Family Engagement and Referrals:
- Work with families to understand scholar needs and make relevant referrals to external organisations when necessary.
- Maintain communication with families to ensure a holistic approach to scholar support.
- Establish strong connections with families to create a supportive partnership in scholars’ education, conducting regular parent workshops, conferences, and communication channels to involve families in their children’s learning journey.
- Make appropriate referrals to external organisations or resources to address scholars’ needs beyond the school environment, collaborating with community organisations, mental health professionals, and social services when necessary.
Observation and Culture Maintenance:
- Maintain a regular schedule of observations in innovation hubs to ensure effective planning and execution of online courses and monitoring activities.
- Collaborate with blended learning facilitators to implement SPARK Schools’ culture and behaviour management techniques.
Instructional Personnel Management:
- Manage instructional personnel by facilitating termly and final evaluations, providing constructive feedback, and identifying areas for professional development.
- Collaborate with the school leadership team to oversee the performance and growth of teaching staff, ensuring alignment with the school’s educational philosophy and goals.
- Participate in recruiting and selecting new teachers, contributing to the hiring process by assessing candidates’ instructional expertise and alignment with the school’s values.
Requirements
Qualifications and experience:
- A relevant social work qualification from a recognised institution, with proof of registration with the SACSSP.
- PGCE advantageous
- 5-10 years of experience dealing with high school-aged children and adults
- Facilitation and counselling experience between clients in need and offering relevant support
- Vast knowledge in individual, group and family case interviews to identify the nature and extent of problems
- English language fluency
- Form 30 clearance
- Clear criminal record

Purpose of Role:
The Assistant Principal drives student achievement as an instructional leader by providing excellent instructional coaching and professional development to benefit classroom instruction and the Learning Lab. The Assistant Principal supports the Principal in providing teachers, blended learning facilitators, and PE coaches the training and support necessary to be highly effective, professional educators.

Responsibilities:
- Ensure the continual professional development of our educators by coaching members of the instructional staff to the successful completion of the goals set in their individualised professional growth plans. This includes designing and facilitating weekly professional development sessions for the whole faculty, as well as arranging for individual professional growth opportunities.
- Support student achievement by setting clear and high expectations for excellent teaching in all content areas. Maintain a regular schedule of observations in all learning spaces and observation review meetings with educators to ensure that they can successfully plan instruction, execute instruction, and implement SPARK Schools’ culture and behaviour management techniques.
- Implement the network’s rigorous curriculum, which aligns to and extends the South African national curriculum.
- Implement online curriculum and small group tutoring in the Learning Lab that aligns to and extends what is taught by classroom teachers.
- Facilitate an assessment and data analysis cycle that allows instructional staff to analyse student performance and identify areas for targeted instruction.
- Collaborate with school leadership team to manage instructional staff, including facilitating termly and final evaluations.
- Participate in the selection of new school-based personnel.

Purpose of Role:
SPARK Schools blended learning facilitators in the foundation phase drive student achievement by overseeing the culture and effectiveness of the Learning Lab, SPARK’s innovative computer lab. SPARK Schools blended learning facilitators work directly with students in whole class, small group, and individual settings to provide academic interventions in literacy and maths.

Responsibilities:
- Create a positive student culture around online learning and small group tutoring and maintain high behavioural expectations for all students.
- Actively “coach” students on all computer programs and ensure that the educational software used in the lab effectively meets the needs of students.
- Create and submit lesson plans for tutoring sessions.
- Tutor small groups of students on literacy and maths skills.
- Create and submit bi-weekly reports on ST Maths.
- Communicate and collaborate with teachers and school administrators to create individualized learning plans for students.
- Use SPARK culture and behaviour management strategies.
- Incorporate SPARK SEL (SocialEmotional Learning) curriculum with scholars.
- Ensure all Learning Lab resources are used and stored responsibly and .
- Report all damages to hardware to the School Operations Manager and fill out relevant incident reports if needed.

SPARK Schools teaches the PR1ME Maths curriculum which is a world class program based on effective teaching and learning practices of Singapore, Republic of Korea and Hong Kong.
Responsibilities:
- Plan for and be prepared to deliver lessons to students from 7:45-3:30 pm (depending on grade level assignment and timetable) daily within content area specialisation.
- Collaborate with grade level and content area partners to develop rigorous, engaging learning experiences and to create individualised behaviour and learning plans for all students.
- Attend pre-service professional development before the school year begins and attend weekly professional development every Monday afternoon.

Primary School Facilities Maintenance Staff Team Lead – SPARK Blue Downs – 2025

Purpose of Role
SPARK Schools facilities team lead ensure that the school property (buildings as well as grounds) is well maintained and in a good condition. They are leading the security, cleaning and maintenance staff at the school. The facilities team lead is integral to the SPARK Schools “culture” and our commitment to providing a world-class learning environment for our scholars.
Responsibilities:
Property Maintenance & Repairs
● Plan, schedule and execute preventative, proactive and reactive maintenance on the school property in a timely and efficient manner
● Undertake items of repair or maintenance on the school property in order to ensure ongoing safety of scholars and staff. Make sure that the repairs and maintenance is signed off prior to execution.
● Install ceiling boards, dry-walling, windows, fences, gates, doors, carpets, tiling, brickwork and/or other installation elements according to the correct building regulations.
● Perform plumbing duties including unblocking toilets, sinks and drains; and install new piping and repairs to any existing fixtures according to the correct building regulations.
● Perform minor electrical repairs and fixings under the supervision of a qualified person.
● Conduct any roof maintenance such as cleaning and maintaining all gutters, roof tiles and waterproofing, as well as cutting trusses according to the correct safety procedures and protocols.
● Assist with minor project work and/or SPARK building expansions when required.
● Execute improvements of current building structures (incl. painting). This includes suggesting ideas or solutions for facilities improvement, beautification and maintenance.
● Work with the Landscaping suppliers or internal team members to ensure that buildings, facilities and surrounding areas are neat, tidy and maintained to the agreed upon standard.
● Periodically inspect buildings, grounds, equipment and other facilities to identify any issues, risks and/or hazards.
● Report and attend to any identified issues in a safe and timely manner; and/or plan to fix the issues depending on their priority.
● Document and record inspections and identified issues in a timely manner.
● Follow best operating practices and quality assurance when undertaking maintenance tasks/repairs and building work.
● Attend to assigned tickets from the facilities service desk within SLA. This includes planning and managing assigned tickets to ensure they are delivered on-time and to standard.
● Supervision of cleaning and cleaning staff.
● Regular sessions with the teams to ensure coordination and focus, motivation etc
● Sign off on external service provider job cards. Equipment & Materials Management
● Manage all tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition at all times.
● Oversee maintenance of small portable equipment to appropriate safety standards.
● On a monthly basis, conduct periodic quality checks/inspections on equipment to ensure everything is up to standard.
● Conduct vehicle checks on a daily basis, and flag any identified problems, services due, etc, in a timely manner.
● Report any damaged or lost items or equipment to Direct Manager for fixing and/or replacement as and when required.
● Provide a list of tools, equipment and/or materials to Direct Manager that will enable successful execution of building repairs and maintenance.
● Maintain and update an inventory record for tools, equipment and/or materials to accurately reflect what is on hand or in stock at all times. Security, Health and Safety Compliance
● Adhere to all security, health and safety compliance regulations, protocols and procedures when conducting any repairs and maintenance on site – this includes wearing the correct PPE at all times.
● Update Health and Safety file on a regular basis to ensure compliance at all times. This includes completing and filing relevant Health and Safety checklists, risk assessments and other important documentation.
● Depending on the nature of work (i.e. hot work / welding, working on heights, confined spaces, etc) conduct risk assessment(s) before completing any project or task. Ensure that all risks are identified, recorded and mitigated in a safe and efficient way.
● Make an effort to stay up to date with Health & Safety compliance and SANS standards.
● Work closely with the Security, Health and Safety Officer when required to ensure that buildings, grounds, workspaces and planned maintenance projects comply with the correct regulations.

● Completed Grade 12 / Matric certificate
● Completed certificate in a specialised, related field (e.g. Electrical, Mechanical, Building, Carpentry or Plumbing)

Purpose of Role:
The School Operations Coordinator drives student achievement in the SPARK Schools network by ensuring that the school operates smoothly, efficiently, and to a consistent standard of excellence. The School Operations Coordinator is integral to the SPARK Schools “culture” and our commitment to rigorous, engaging learning experiences for our scholars.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
● Implement school wide systems and procedures (for example, arrivals, dismissals, cover timetables and aftercare timetables) that facilitate student achievement and align with SPARK Schools network wide best practice.
● Facilitate professional development for the operational staff on the implementation of schoolwide systems, as well as personal and professional competencies. This includes designing and facilitating biweekly group sessions and individual one-on-one coaching sessions, as well as arranging for individual professional growth opportunities.
● Oversee the receptionist’s administration of the student information system and student records.
● Ensure aftercare attendance and late pick up is tracked accurately and submitted to billing on time.
● Organise and maintain relationships with extramural vendors.
● Line manage school site operational staff (receptionist, supervisors, BLFs), including regular performance reviews.
● Manage all school inventory, including fixed assets (technology and furniture), stationery, and other resources.
● Conduct weekly asset check of all Chromebooks for scholars and staff radios.
● Conduct monthly stock taking and update asset register.
● Oversee the maintenance of the school facility, including coordinating efforts amongst SPARK Schools Support staff, outside vendors and suppliers.
● Maintain a daily schedule of facilities and grounds walk-arounds and observations, including lunch, break and aftercare observations.
● Coordinate with the Procurement team at SPARK Support for fixed assets and consumables.
● Manage the site specific and aftercare budgets.
● Participate in the selection of new school-based staff.
● Onboard new personnel.
● Understand and enforce network-wide policies and compliance requirements.
