Pump Operator (Gauteng)

Description

PURPOSE

This exciting opportunity exists to operate, inspect and maintain water pumps, including the starting and stopping of pumps as per standard operating procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations

• Punctual adherence to site-specific time schedules/shift times.

• Attend safety talks.

• Perform daily risk assessments.

• Conduct shift handovers.

• Valve operations: open and close valves as per standard operating

procedures.

• Stop and start pumps as per standard operating procedures.

• Report downtime on pumps.

• Report spillages.

• Report leaks.

• Write reports (Hourly/Daily).

• Monitor incoming and outgoing line pressures.

• Assist and carry out any tasks and instructions from higher line managers.

• Take samples (PH and turbidity).

• Communicate with site operations regarding density control, flow control, and

the starting and stopping of pumps.

Health and Safety

• Follow written safe work procedures when executing specific tasks and

emergencies as per training.

• Wear the correct PPE for each specific task.

• Adhere to all safety procedures and emergency procedures as per training

and site-specific standards

• Maintain emergency preparedness.

• Report unsafe acts and/or conditions (HPH/HPI).

• Participate in all training-related activities.

Housekeeping

• Practice good housekeeping around all pumps and valves.

• Clean pump chambers.

• Store equipment properly.

Basic Inspections

• To report all defects relating to pump stations.

• Conduct visible pump and valve inspections using a checklist.

• Inspect pressure gauges.

• Inspect pump and pulley guards.

Time Keeping

• Accurately report personal timekeeping (start, knocking off, and attendance).

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• Grade Twelve (12) School Certificate.

• On-the-job training on pumps.

EXPERIENCE

• At least 1 year of relevant practical experience in a similar operation (tailings/metallurgical plant).

PURPOSE

To carry out electrical diagnostics, maintenance, repairs and installations of plant and equipment in a safe, efficient and compliant manner, ensuring maximum equipment availability and operational reliability.

Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES

Electrical Maintenance and Repairs

  • Diagnose, repair and maintain electrical systems on heavy mining equipment, light vehicles and ancillary plant.
  • Perform fault-finding on starter motors, alternators, wiring harnesses, sensors, control units and electronic systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain lighting systems, safety alarms, monitoring systems and communication equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance in line with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards and maintenance schedules.

Diagnostic and Troubleshooting

  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify electrical faults.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics and technical manuals
  • Identify root causes of failures and recommend corrective and preventative actions.

Compliance and Safety

  • Adhere to Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), company policies and site-specific safety procedures.
  • Ensure work is performed in a safe, environmentally responsible manner.
  • Complete job cards, inspections, and safety documentation accurately and timeously.
  • Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, safety meetings.

Equipment and Tool Management

  • Ensure proper use, care, and accountability of tools, diagnostic equipment, and company assets.
  • Report defects, damage, or unsafe equipment promptly.
  • Collaboration and Support
  • Work closely with Artisans, Technicians, Operators, and Supervisors to ensure equipment availability.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Apprentices and Assistants as and when required.
  • Participate in breakdowns, shutdowns and planned maintenance activities.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and maintenance processes.
  • Keep up-to-date with new technologies and industry best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement and cost-saving initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 / N3 Engineering Studies
  • Trade Test Certificate:  Auto Electrician (Red Seal / Section 13 or 28)

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum three years post-trade experience as a qualified Auto Electrician
  • Experience in mining, construction, heavy equipment, and industrial environment preferred
  • Strong knowledge of automotive and mining equipment and electrical systems
  • Proficient in fault-finding using diagnostic tools and software
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Understanding of PLCs, CAN-bus systems, and electronic control units (advantageous)

Parts and inventory management.

COORDINATOR

Lead team to complying with company SHE strategy and zero harm frame-work

Develop, review and agree the weekly maintenance plan with the Maintenance and Process team. Ensures safe execution.

Reduce reaction times to breakdowns (MTTR) and increase mean time between failures (MTBF) through the effective implementation of maintenance best practices, systems and procedures.

Oversee third party contractor maintenance and compliance.

Maintains an organised, clean and safe work area.

Evaluates condition monitoring status.

ADMINISTRATION

Ensures maintenance logs and work order documentation on equipment inspection and repairs are maintained to required standard

Prepares month end performance report for engineer

Generates cost report to site manager/engineer.

Ensures all break downs are appropriately recorded by subordinates.

MANAGING THE TEAM

Select and appoint competent and passionate people.

Supervision, training and development of maintenance subordinates.

Maintain open channel communication with subordinates through daily meetings for two-way feedback.

Monitor performance & maintain discipline.

Serve as a mentor to yearly intake of work integrated learning students.

QUALIFICATIONS

N3 Mechanical/Electrical Engineering subjects

Trade Test MQA/MERSETA preferred

Supervisory Course (Advantageous)

EXPERIENCE

Learnership/Apprentice in Mining/construction/transport/plant or

manufacturing2 years

Artisan 3-5 years in Mining/plant or manufacturing
