CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The core purpose of this academic support post is to support NMU’s Innovation and technology transfer activities.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
The Innovation Office at the Nelson Mandela University is responsible for the identification, protection, and
management of the Nelson Mandela University’s intellectual property (IP). The Innovation Office manages a
diverse range of externally funded research projects and is involved in spin-off and start-up companies. The
Innovation Officer will form a key part of the team responsible for the activities of the office.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
• •Coordination of NMU Intellectual Property including assisting with the filing of patent applications,
management and maintenance of the IP portfolio; ensure adherence of NMMU to appropriate legislation
• Support commercialisation of NMU Intellectual Property Portfolio including identification of research work
that has commercial potential and assisting with management of projects
• Technology Transfer Office management support including assisting with the preparation of research
contracts, document management and database management


CORE COMPETENCIES
• An understanding of the patenting system, processes and procedures
• The ability to identify and analyse intellectual property to inform commercialisation strategy and outcomes
• Familiarity with South Africa’s policy landscape relating to research, innovation systems, science and
technology and intellectual property commercialisation
• Excellent computer skills particularly in MSWord and MSExcel
• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
• Planning skills and decisiveness.
• Flexible approach to work responsibilities, understanding that tasks change depending on demand.
• Trustworthy and able to work without daily supervision; excellent team work ethic; values honesty and
transparency.


REQUIREMENTS
• M + 4 in technology-based scientific field or engineering. A relevant master’s degree and/or a commercial qualification
would be an advantage.
• A minimum of three years’ relevant experience.
• Project management and commercialisation experience would be an advantage.
• Experience in a higher education, government or funding agency environment.
• Valid driver’s license.

  1. Strategic Employee Relations Leadership

Develop, implement, and monitor a university-wide Employee Relations strategy aligned to the HR and institutional strategy.
Establish and maintain effective ER structures, systems, and resources.
Implement a Quality Management System for the HR function.

  1. Employee Relations Management

Provide strategic oversight of all ER services, including discipline, grievances, disputes, and appeals.

Address audit findings and manage HR-related risks through appropriate controls.

Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including unions, management, employees, legal bodies, and service providers.

REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in law.
Postgraduate qualification in Labour Law, Labour Relations, or Human Resources.
Postgraduate qualification in management would be beneficial.
Admission as an attorney will be considered an added advantage.
Experience

Minimum 8 years’ experience in complex employee relations, preferably in a multi-union environment.
Proven experience in collective bargaining, dispute resolution, and labour litigation.
At least 5 years’ experience managing professional staff.
Other Requirements

Valid, unendorsed Code EB driver’s license.
Willingness to work extended hours as required.

•Performs reprographic services for the George Campus, incl all bulk printing, print charges and paper distributions

•Responsible for refuelling of jerry cans and safe delivery and storage on campus

•Collection and delivery of goods across campuses as well as from suppliers in town

•Assist with general finance department responsibilities
