Postdoctoral Researcher – Radiation and Reactor Theory (North West)

Work Description

The candidate will be involved in the development and implementation of computational methods for the applied radiation and nuclear reactor science, with a particular focus on numerical modelling of medical isotope irradiation with existing and novel computational tools and very strong emphasis on optimization of the irradiation planning. The candidate will contribute to implementation of the developed methods in OSCAR-5 reactor computational framework and their verification and validation. Some aspects of the project may involve data science and Machine Learning methods. The candidate will also be responsible for reporting on work completed in departmental meetings, assisting with Honours, Masters and PhD student co-supervision. The candidate will contribute in authoring research reports and publications as well as presenting at conferences and workshops. Candidate is expected to produce a minimum of two papers or reports (internally or externally peer reviewed) per year.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

1. The candidate should hold a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, Applied Mathematics or Operations Research obtained within the past five years. The candidate should not be older than 45 years at the time of application.
2. Experience in developing and implementing numerical algorithms, applying optimization, Machine Learning and data science methods, Python programming skills as well as experience of using computational codes utilized in Nuclear Engineering (MCNP, Serpent, SCALE, etc.), would be an advantage.

Postdoctoral Researcher – Radiolabelling Organic Chemistry (North West)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the area of radiolabelling (organic chemistry), in the Applied Radiation Department at the Research & Innovation Division of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA). The successful candidate will engage in full-time postdoctoral research projects that are funded by NTP with the focus of developing diagnostic and therapeutic molecules for cancer management.

Work Description

1. The candidate will develop new synthesis routes for the preparation of bioactive compounds and radio-therapeutics with known biological activities.
2. The candidate will perform synthesis of new linkers and attach them to the bioactive compounds.
3. The candidate will fully characterise the synthesised compounds using various spectrometric and spectroscopic analytical techniques.
4. The candidate will radiolabel the molecules and perform cell uptake and stability studies.
5. The candidate will also be responsible for reporting the completed work in group meetings, assisting with mentoring of Masters and PhD student’s.
6. The candidate will contribute in authoring research reports and publications and presenting at conferences and workshops.
7. The candidate is expected to publish a minimum of two papers (internally or externally peer reviewed) per year.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

1. The candidate should hold a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry obtained within the past five years. The candidate should not be older than 45 years at the time of application.
2. Solid knowledge of organic synthesis reactions e.g. carbon-carbon coupling reactions, amide forming reactions, halogenation reactions, protection and deprotection reactions etc.
3. Solid knowledge of various analytical techniques such as thin layer chromatography (TLC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy.
4. Experience in handling radioactivity, molecular modelling and knowledge of some radio-analytical techniques (such as liquid scintillation counter and gamma spectroscopy) and radiation detecting techniques would be an added advantage. 
5. Minimum of one accepted publication in the last five years with additional publications will also be an added advantage. Publications should be in the area of organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or radiochemistry.
6. Good English communication skills, both oral and written, are a prerequisite.

Job purpose:

NTP has a vacancy for a Lu-177 n.c.a Production Technician. The incumbent will be responsible for:

safe operation in the production of Lu-177 n.c.a products and supplying customers with Lu-177 n.c.a products in compliance to Customer specifications, just in time (JIT) delivery, radiochemical purity, radionuclidic purity, activity concentration, and other product related specifications.

The Lu-177 n.c.a Production Technician is also responsible for ensuring that the Lu-177 n.c.a Production unit operations are carried out successfully through Engineering and Chemistry applications, complies with laws of the country, facility nuclear license, applicable cGMP requirements, NNR operational conditions and Necsa Group’s applicable policies.

SAFETY

• Review generated records and ensure that they comply to GDocP requirements.
• Ensure that the necessary documentation is always available at the workstation.
• Ensure that qualified and calibration equipment’s are used in the production process.
• Ensure the daily verifications of pH Meters, ionisation chambers and balances are conducted, and that relevant Logbooks are completed, and records are generated.

SUSTAINABLE, EFFICIENT PRODUCTION AND SUPPLY OF APIs

• Complete all batch production records at the time of executing tasks as per GDocP.
• Ensure all microbiological monitoring is completed and submitted after clearance from controlled areas.
• Submit QC samples to relevant laboratories in accordance with SOP.
• Perform preparation of production system, reagent cabinet, waste cabinet, LAF, dispensing system, hot cells and autoclave according to procedure.
• Return material from QC laboratories in accordance with SOP
• Submit decayed microbiological samples to the QC department
• Produce all batches of Lu-177 n.c.a within specifications (compliance on RCP, RNP, pH, appearance, activity concentration)
• Manually operate the dispensing system in accordance with SOP when necessary.
• Assist with qualifications and product stability studies according to procedure and relevant protocols.
• Qualify autoclave and hot cell equipment with service providers in accordance with procedure
• Assist with production system replacement schedules including column manufacturing, regenerating, system line, valve block and crusher tube replacements.
• Monitor process parameters and report deviations to production manager
• Ensure the production of Lu-177 n.c.a in compliance with the DMF, procedures and customer specifications.
• Ensure that customer orders are dispensed accurately and meets the internal cut-off times
• Participate in any Lu-177.nc.a production troubleshooting (Engineering applications)
• Ensure that post-production clean up steps are executed, and evidence thereof is available.
• Always participate in effective communication.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• A strong cGMP background
• Basic knowledge and understanding Production in a Radiopharmaceutical\Radiochemical environment.
• A strong background working in a production environment/ plant.
• Knowledge and understanding of the company policies and procedures applicable to the specific work environment to ensure that work outcomes are compliant to the policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of Safety in a Radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• National Diploma Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics or equivalent.
• Experience in Radiopharmaceutical\ Radiochemical Production Environment is required.
• Knowledge of cGMP, GDocP and ISO9001:2015 audits would be advantageous.
• At least 12 months in Production experience having served in a Radiopharmaceutical\ Radiochemical or similar production environment.

The incumbent will be responsible to perform instruments calibration and maintenance activities (including installation and commissioning of newly acquired instruments) in the laboratory through effective planning for the laboratory to deliver a reliable and cost effective service to ensure that these are in good working condition and are available 90% of the time. • Update the Section head or team leader weekly in terms of status of work performed (maintenance or calibrations as per plan) including status of equipment or instruments downtime.
• Participate in the implementation and maintenance of a proper lab asset management system that adheres to the international best practice such as ISO 55001.
• Establish good relationships with suppliers to obtain quotes on time, follow up quotes and orders regularly and adhere to SCM procedures.

4. Adhere to internal laboratory requirements to improve level of efficiency in business operations in order to produce highest number of quality products and services following responsible business practices.

• Perform and document maintenance/ calibrations actions in compliance to all applicable instructions and procedures by adhering to the requirements of the quality system and OEM in the laboratory such as QM, Procedures and SANAS requirements.
• Ensure adherence to Health & Safety aspects.  Ensure that safety and housekeeping are maintained to the required standard as required and fulfil the role of BBS observer and perform observations as contracted.
• Assist section head with the review or updating information for development and implementation of calibration methods and spreadsheets on the new digital/analog monitors when requested.
• Adhere to actions identified to close out NCR’s.
• Develop and manage an equipment / asset register to demonstrate the age of all equipment and their replacement plan especially for the labs responsible.
