Reporting to the Foreman: Engineering Workshop; the appointee’s duties will include, but not be limited to the below and execution of the following tasks:

  • Machining of metal, wood and plastic (the incumbent would need to make products out of metal, wood and plastic)
  • Accurate operation of the milling machine and lathe and other high speed precision machines
  • Maintenance of lecture seating structures and related work (especially welding seating structures)
  • Welding work
  • Manufacturing and repairs of research equipment (general campus, manufacturing & repair requests for specialised design work)
  • Consulting with job requesters
  • Design of instruments for research purpose
  • Ensure adherence to Health and safety compliance
  • Housekeeping by ensuring that the workshop is clean and orderly at all times
  • Assumption of all duties and responsibilities in the absence of the section head

Minimum Requirements

  • A recognized relevant trade certificate (Toolmaker or Fitter & Turner) 
  • 3 years relevent experience, with 2 years supervisory experience
  • Valid driver’s license code  (with two years driving experience)

  • Basic computer literacy in MS-Word and Excel

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in the use of Toolmaking tools and equipment.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations with skill and care.
  • Working knowledge of building management systems.

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

The Infrastructure and Engineering Department plays a pivotal role in the maintenance and improvement of the University’s infrastructure. Applications are invited for dynamic, motivated individuals with general building technical skills and knowledge who will be reporting to the Foreman, to assist with maintenance, general facilities management, and administration.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Administrative:

  • Maintain relevant and up-to-date records of all precinct requirements
  • Maintain a drawing and specification register
  • Maintain asset inventory
  • Log utilities of building and tenants
  • General administrative assistance to the Precinct Manager
  • Raise and close Job Cards

Handyman:

  • General maintenance/handyman function to quickly analyse and solve maintenance issues
  • Communicate effectively with Precinct Manager and the stakeholder community to ensure optimal building performance
  • Source parts, spares, and services.
  • Coordinate and monitor outsourced services
  • Conduct regular inspections, and report on building services: electrical, plumbing and drainage, wet fire, compressed air lines, vacuum lines, smoke extraction systems, gas suppression systems, lifts, plant rooms, pumps, fire equipment, storage tanks, UPS, generator, etc.
  • Report on snags, issues and items affecting building condition and performance
  • Conduct weekly utility meter readings
  • Update building log book
  • Assist the Precinct Manager to investigate and keep up to date with new products and technology which can assist the organisation to reduce costs and improve service
  • Ensure employees, buildings and equipment meet the relevant safety requirements in terms of the OHS Act and any other relevant regulations

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric (Senior Certificate)
  • 2 years’ experience in general maintenance (Electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and building maintenance experience, including experience with hand and power tools)
  • A valid driver’s license (code EB) – with two years driving experience

The Artisan Locksmith is responsible for providing specialized locksmith services, including the installation, maintenance, and repair of locks, keys, and security systems. Reporting to the Manager: Maintenance, the appointee’s duties will include, but not be limited to the below tasks:

ICS, in line with growing its capability and supporting the Digital Transformation Strategy of UWC, offers an opportunity for a Co-Ordinator: Databases in the ICS IT Operations and Services Support unit.

The primary purpose of the Co-Ordinator: Database Administration is to ensure that the University’s databases are managed by application of sound database best practices, maintenance and administration tasks.

The key role and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for senior MSSQL and Oracle DBA’s, ensuring smooth delivery of DBA services at UWC.
  • Act as the liaison between business stakeholders and DBA’s for database related queries and requests.
  • Co-ordinate daily, weekly, and project-related database activities, including patching, upgrades, and incident response.
  • Track contractor deliverables, ensuring adherence to timelines, SLAs, and quality standards.
  • Maintain a central register of active tasks and projects.
  • Perform first-level monitoring of MSSQL and Oracle databases using approved tools.
  • Run basic SQL queries to validate health checks, backup status, and performance metrics.
  • Log and escalate incidents appropriately to vendors and management.
  • Approve and manage database user account management and permissions requests.
  • Maintain documentation on database infrastructure, including inventory, licensing, and lifecycle schedules.
  • Prepare regular reports on system performance, uptime, vendor activities, and audit compliance.
  • Ensure all knowledge transfer from DBA’s is properly documented.
  • Facilitate change control processes for database activities.
  • Communicate planned maintenance and downtime notifications to end-users and stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of integration with other databases such MYSQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL. Maria etc

Minimum Requirements

  • Senior certificate with technical certifications in MS SQL or Oracle Database Management and more than 5 years of demonstrated experience as a DBA or similar role in a large organisation or educational institution.

  • A relevant NQF 7 qualification with technical certifications in MS SQL or Oracle Database Management and more than 3 years of demonstrated experience as a DBA or similar role in a large organisation or educational institution.

Work Experience

  • Must have familiarity and understanding of basic development and scripting computer languages – MS SQL, Oracle DB, the Windows Operating System and Database Design Concepts. Programming experience desirable but not essential.
  • Understanding of POPIA, cybersecurity threats, database security baseline.
  • Familiarity in use of diagnostic and data manipulation tools.

To be part of a team responsible for the analysis, design, build, test, deployment and customisation of bespoke as well commercial applications. The incumbent will further be responsible for providing maintenance and support in respect of these applications.

The key role and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) phases especially solution design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance of applications and solutions
  • Design, develop, maintain, and support existing and new applications and solutions based on business requirements.
  • Ensure that solutions and enhancements comply with guidelines and best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership while responsible for development and implementation of standards to deliver high quality software.
  • Training and mentorship of junior developers where applicable

  • Work in collaboration with the various ICS units, particularly the ICS Project Management Office, Infrastructure & Operations team and Application Development teams, towards the successful delivery of various projects
  • Estimate the efforts involved for development and implementation and prepare Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) as required

  • Identify, report and manage issues and risks to applications and solutions
  • Review and report on performance, stability, and health of applications and solutions

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree or 3 Year Diploma in Information Systems

Minimum Working Experience
