The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) was established under Section 22 of the Legal Succession to the South African Transport Services Act of 2008 (as amended). PRASA is a public entity fully owned by the government and reports to the Minister of Transport. Its legal mandate includes providing commuter rail services within metropolitan areas and long-distance (inter-city) rail and bus services within, to, and from South Africa’s borders.
