Provincial Communications and Social Media Officer

Location: Johannesburg
Type of Employment: Fixed-term contract linked to the legislative term of office
Salary: Market-related based on qualifications and experience.

About the Role:
ActionSA is seeking a dynamic and experienced communications and social media officer to join
our team in Gauteng. This role is crucial in ensuring effective communication between our provincial
public representatives and the public, media, and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate will
possess strong communication skills, a keen understanding of the political landscape, and the ability
to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Objective:

  • Provide comprehensive media support to ActionSA’s provincial operations through the
    production of written communications and media outputs of the highest standard that
    advance ActionSA’s agenda.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Political Science, Journalism, Public Policy, or a related
    field. A post-graduate degree will be a significant advantage.
  • 2–3 years of relevant work experience is required. Qualifications and work experience will
    both be assessed when considering years of experience, so a relevant post-graduate degree
    may serve as a substitute.
  • Relevant communications or media-related experience will be a significant advantage.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive media support to ActionSA’s provincial operations including
    coordinating with legislative representatives to ensure accurate and timely information
    dissemination.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies to promote ActionSA’s provincial and
    legislative activities through proactive identification of issues that add strategic value to
    ActionSA’s efforts.
  • Determining ActionSA’s position on issues of communication and subsequently drafting press
    releases, speeches, opinion pieces and related content to effectively convey ActionSA’s
    message.
  • Develop, curate, and manage relevant content across all social media platforms to effectively
    convey the positions of ActionSA’s Caucus.
  • Conduct regular and special media briefings and interviews.
  • Monitor media coverage and public sentiment related to legislative activities.
  • Develop media databases and broadcast lists and maintain and strengthen relationships with
    media outlets and journalists.
  • Managing reputational risks and opportunities.

General Duties:

  • Support all ActionSA-related duties as required, which may include, but are not limited to,
    assisting with organising events, performing general administrative tasks, and providing
    assistance to other units of the organisation.
  • To act in a manner that is consistent with ActionSA’s vision, values, constitution and code of
    conduct.

Skills Required:

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal. Additional languages
    will be a significant advantage.
  • Strong organisational and multitasking abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media platforms.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Working Conditions:

  • While this a hybrid position, successful candidates will have to be present at the
    legislative district frequently.
  • Candidates must have access to broadband internet and ensure they retain connectivity
    during load-shedding.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and political landscapes.

Office Manager – North West Legislature

Title: Office Manager – North West Legislature (NW-01)
Location: Mmabatho (hybrid)
Type of Employment: Five-year fixed-term contract linked to the legislative term of office

About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated and resourceful Office Manager to join ActionSA’s operations in North
West. This mid-level position is ideal for individuals with a strong background in administration, office
management and a keen interest in politics. You will play a key role in supporting ActionSA’s efforts
of being a productive opposition in the North West Provincial Legislature.

Objective:

  • To manage the office of North West provincial caucus and serve as the primary point of contact
    for internal and external stakeholder with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Economics, Commerce, Business Administration, Politics, Law, Public
    Policy, or a related field. A post-graduate degree will be a significant advantage.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience is required. Qualifications and work experience will
    both be assessed when considering years of experience, so relevant work-experience and a
    proven track-record as an executive assistant may serve as a substitute for qualifications.
  • Additional research or communications experience will be an advantage.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage internal and external stakeholders by determining the appropriate course of action,
    referral, or response, exercising judgement to reflect the values of the caucus and party.
  • Provide sophisticated calendar management for the caucus. Prioritise inquiries and requests
    while troubleshooting conflicts; make judgements and recommendations to ensure smooth dayto-day engagements.
  • Ensure that internal communications are effectively managed to keep the caucus well informed
    of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately.
  • Manage all caucus office operations, including liaising with the Provincial Executive Committee
    (PEC) and/or National structures.
  • Arrange and handle all logistics for meetings and events: schedule meetings; draft agendas;
    develop, compile, and distribute presentation materials; and record meeting minutes as
    directed by the caucus leader.
  • Adhere to compliance with applicable rules and regulations set by the Legislature and the
    Party.
  • Complete a broad variety of administrative tasks that facilitate the caucus’ ability to effectively
    perform its duties in the Legislature and the Party, including collecting and preparing information for meetings with internal and external stakeholders; composing and preparing
  • correspondence; maintaining contact lists (data base); making travel arrangements; and
  • completing expense and mileage reports.
  • Assist in the selection of vendors and purchase equipment, services, and supplies necessary
    for operation of office.
  • Manage information systems operations including hardware, software, desktop support,
    internal telecommunications, and strategic systems development and planning.
  • Devise and maintain office filing system, manage office budgets, process invoices and be the
    repository of information for caucus.
  • Make appropriate, informed decisions regarding priorities and available time.
  • Attending meetings with MPL(s) as required.

General Duties:

  • Support all ActionSA-related duties as required, which may include, but are not limited to,
    assisting with organising events, performing general administrative tasks, and providing
    assistance to other units of the organisation.

    to problem-solving.
  • Capacity for effective stakeholder engagement and excellent project management and
    organisational skills.
  • Good understanding of the research, retail and customer service industries.
  • The ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Politicians, Senior
    Executives, Staff, Community leaders, and Donors.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • A track record of active volunteerism and community engagement will be an advantage.

ActionSA’s efforts of being a productive opposition in the North West Provincial Legislature.

Objective:

  • To produce research, analysis, written communications and advice of the highest standard to
    guide the positions and decisions of the caucus in relation to legislative issues.
  • To draft media statements on behalf of the caucus and monitor and liaise with the media
    proactively to ensure the positions of the caucus gain media traction.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Politics, Law, Public Policy, or a related field. A post-graduate
    degree will be a significant advantage.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience is required. Qualifications and work experience will both
    be assessed when considering years of experience, so a relevant post-graduate degree may
    serve as a substitute.

  • Engage with stakeholders relevant to research and policy matters.

  • Attend committee meetings and take notes on behalf of caucus members.
