Overview of the Organisation
NMISA is a Type 3A Public Entity established in accordance with the Measurement Unit and
Measurement Standards Act, No. 18 of 2006 (the Act). NMISA is mandated by the Act to provide
for the use of the international system of units (the SI) and other measurement units in South Africa,
to maintain national measurement standards (NMS) and to determine and ensure the comparability

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
NMISA is seeking an experienced Toolmaker / Mechanical Artisan to support the design,
manufacture and modification of precision mechanical components and artefacts used in
metrology laboratories and measuring instruments.
The successful candidate will take a lead role in the Mechanical Workshop, including hands-on
machining, basic design support, job scheduling, and supervision/training of workshop staff and
learners. The role works closely with engineers and laboratory specialists to deliver high-accuracy,
fit-for-purpose mechanical solutions.
This position is well suited to a senior mechanical toolmaker or electro-mechanical artisan with
strong workshop experience in precision manufacturing environments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Trade Test Certificate as a Toolmaker / Fitter & Turner / Millwright / ElectroMechanical Artisan
- National Diploma (N6) or equivalent technical qualification (Mechanical or ElectroMechanical)
- Minimum 5 years’ practical experience in a precision mechanical workshop
environment - Strong experience in manual machining (lathe, milling, drilling, fitting)
- Working experience with CNC machining (lathe and/or milling)
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and specifications
- Sound knowledge of engineering materials and mechanical components
- Experience with CAD software (e.g. Fusion 360 or similar)
- Experience with Fanuc or similar CNC controllers
- Basic TIG welding (including aluminium)
- Exposure to electro-mechanical systems or basic electrical controls
- Experience in , tooling or prototype environments
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manufacture, modify and repair precision mechanical components using manual and
CNC machining - Operate lathes, milling machines and general workshop equipment to high accuracy
standards - Support the design and interpretation of mechanical drawings and specifications
- Assist laboratories with prototype development and specialised tooling
- Lead and coordinate day-to-day activities of the Mechanical Workshop
- Supervise, mentor and train workshop staff and apprentices
- Schedule work and prioritise jobs to ensure effective use of workshop resources
- Maintain workshop machines, tools and housekeeping standards
- Promote and enforce a safe working environment
- Assist with procurement of materials, components and consumables
- Support basic budget tracking and reporting for workshop activities
- Maintain records in line with NMISA’s Technical Quality Management System
(TQMS) - Engage with internal and external clients to understand requirements and propose
practical solutions
