We are seeking to appoint an Academic Support Teacher who will be responsible for supporting the academic and social and emotional needs of students within the Pre-Preparatory school. They will be responsible for all academic assessments for new students as well as benchmark assessments. They will predominantly work with students who have mild-moderate learning needs and those seeking enrichment. The Academic Support Teacher works closely with classroom teachers to co-plan, co-teach and assess students in an effort to meet the varying needs of students within our school. They play a pivotal role in developing collaborative relationships with administrators, teachers and parents to create individual learning plans with clearly articulated goals and strategies.
Main Responsibilities
- Teach academic support and enrichment lessons
- Provide small group and individual academic support for identified students before and after School.
- Provide academic support to boys in Grades 0 to 2.
- Develop remedial resources for use in teaching.
- Conduct staff development workshops on Inclusive education practices and provide advice on how to accommodate boys with barriers to learning in the classroom.
- Develop and disseminate materials to grade drivers detailing how best to accommodate boys with barriers to learning in the classroom.
- Review the Inclusion teaching and learning practices and find ways to better meet the needs of teachers and the boys in the Pre-Preparatory.
Requirements
- Have a suitable degree and a teaching qualification, and be registered with SACE
- Have a proven track record in remedial teaching at Pre-Preparatory school level
- Display excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
- Ability to interact positively with parents and therapists
- Able to develop and sustain new ideas, including effectively tracking boys
- Able to identify boys in need of academic support and work with teachers in the classroom
- Ability to incorporate training in academic support skills into the staff development programme
- Able to develop and manage a flexible system of accommodations
- Have a sound practical knowledge of the curriculum
- Be able to teach a focus group
- Understanding of the challenges and opportunities in respect of being an independent school within Africa and in South Africa and the implications of this for the school

Our music department is vibrant and highly active across the Pre-Preparatory, Preparatory Schools, College, and Sixth Form. The piano section lies at its heart, and we are seeking an exceptional pianist and educator to lead it during a period of parental leave.
We are looking to appoint a Head of Piano on a 3-month fixed-term contract. This is a hands-on leadership role, combining advanced piano teaching, accompanying, and administrative oversight of the piano section.
Key responsibilities include:
Teaching and Accompaniment:
- Teach piano to individual students in the Prep, College and Sixth Form from beginner up to Grade 8+ level.
- Accompany instrumentalists & vocalists for internal/external performances, competitions and examinations.
- Teaching music theory classes in the Preparatory School and Music as a Subject in the College (IEB syllabus) as determined by the Director of Music.
- Weekly piano playing in Chapel/Crypt as determined by the Head of Chapel Music.
- Accompanist/répétiteur for choir rehearsals and performances, as determined by the Head of Chapel Music.
Management and Administrative Responsibilities:
- Management of all peripatetic piano staff, including allocation of students to teachers, monitoring of attendance records of students and processing of new student applications for piano lessons. Liaising with parents/students in situations where the peripatetic teacher is not able to resolve an issue.
- Responsibility for the general maintenance and upkeep of the pianos across all the schools on campus. Liaising with the piano tuner and DoM to ensure the instruments are timeously tuned/serviced to prevent damage.
- Carrying out the regular marking and assessment of Subject Music students on a termly basis, and completing report comments for them.
- Compiling and editing of all instrumental reports from peripatetic teachers on a termly basis.
- Facilitating the provision of weekly accompaniment sessions for all instrumentalists and vocalists.
- Maintaining an accompaniment roster of pupils and their allocated accompanists, as well as collating attendance registers of weekly rehearsals and following up on non-attendance.
General Responsibilities:
- Ensure that our safeguarding responsibilities are front and centre of all we do
- Manage risk in the school’s piano programme, ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and updated in conjunction with the DSO’s and health and safety officers
- To manage, develop and to take direct responsibility for all piano playing and teaching across the various schools.
- To ensure there is excellent communication with parents, students and staff throughout.
The successful candidate should have:
- An appropriate tertiary qualification in Music, specialising in piano performance
- Practical knowledge and experience of modern piano teaching methodology
- Excellent sight reading skills
- Proven track record of excellent results from students in external board examinations and established competitions and similar events
- Extensive experience in accompanying instrumentalists, vocalists and choirs
- Knowledge of piano repertoire and modern performance trends
- Experience in teaching music theory, music as a subject (IEB) vocal and instrumental teaching, which will be considered an advantage
- An awareness, understanding and experience of issues relating to safeguarding the health, welfare and safety of students
- Evidence of successfully leading and managing change, ideally at a strategic level
