The Constitutional and Legal Service Office (CLSO) provides legal services to Parliament and is an integral part of Parliamentary Services. CLSO is looking to fill three positions for Parliamentary Legal Adviser. The ideal candidates must be passionate about contributing to the values of Parliament. JOB SUMMARY
A Parliamentary Legal Adviser is responsible for providing legal advice to Parliament and the Parliamentary Service. The key responsibilities are to:
- Provide written and oral legal advice to the Presiding Officers, Parliamentary Committees, and the Secretary to Parliament.
- Advise Committees on legislation through the various stages of the legislative process.
- Manage litigation matters involving Parliament, including advising the Presiding Officers on litigation strategy, liaising with Attorneys and Counsel representing Parliament, and ensuring the interests of Parliament are protected.
- Advise on Parliament’s oversight mandate.
- Draft and scrutinise legal instruments.
- Draft and vet contracts and policies.
- Conduct legal research.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
A candidate must:
- Have a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent legal qualification.
- Be an admitted Attorney or Advocate of the High Court of South Africa.
- Have five (5) years’ post-admission experience as a Legal Adviser in the legislative or public sector, or in the areas of constitutional or public law.
- This post is subject to a six (6) month probation period.
A candidate will be at an advantage if they have:
- A Master of Laws degree in an area of constitutional or public law
- Experience in managing litigation.
A candidate must demonstrate:

JOB SUMMARY
The successful incumbents will each be responsible for providing comprehensive administrative support to a team of legal advisers within the Constitutional and Legal Services Office.
Your key responsibilities will be:
- Administrative Support, including managing queries, appointments, assets, procurement and invoice/payment management (including preparing draft memoranda), keeping records of work produced by the team and financial transactions of the team, and meeting management.
- Correspondence handling, including processing and directing correspondence, record keeping, following up on the completion of instructions, and the development and compilation of reports.
- Maintaining office systems, such as filing, maintaining registers used by the team, sourcing and categorising documentation, maintaining databases related to such documentation, maintaining contact databases, assisting with the compilation of team reports, and taking and maintaining minutes of team meetings.
- Acting as liaison with the offices of the Presiding Officers, Institutional Managers, Political Parties, Service Providers, and other stakeholders, which may include sending off deliverables and following up for signatures and further instructions.
TO QUALIFY, YOU MUST HAVE:
- Diploma or degree in Administration or Law and 3 years’ relevant experience in Administration position. A paralegal qualification or experience will be an advantage.

- Good command of English (oral and written communication skills).
- Ability to find information from the Internet.
- Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe applications.
