Requirements:

1. Purpose of Role
-The role will include the driving of surface railway trains, consisting of locomotives, wagons and/or hoppers, with the highest possible level of safety and efficiency so as to ensure the success of the total surface railway operation within Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine’s railways and sidings.

2. Work of Role
-Administration of necessary systems
-Complete administrative duties
-Perform an efficiency brake test immediately after first movement of the train
-Maintain total control of the train
-Handle train as per prescribed train handling procedures
-Ensure that all points are properly positioned for the train’s direction of travel
-Only proceed to the next point on the line authorized by the rail transport controller
-Control the train at “section speed” and to be able to stop timorously where necessary and as prescribed in the Rule Book
-Frequently examine and watch for signs of defective rolling stock en-route
-Report any locomotive or wagon/hopper defects
-Obey all signs and signals, including hand signals
-Ensure free standing spans are correctly secured to prevent runaways
-Effective administration of systems
-Support the achievement of the mine plan through the effective haulage of the ore body from the various shafts to the plants (bunkers)

3. Qualifications
-Train Driver Certificate of Competence
-Grade 12

4. Experience
-Minimum of 2 years’ experience as Train Driver

5. Knowledge and Skills
-Valid driver’s license
-Certified Competent for specific locomotive classes
-Certificate of competency for train handling
-Road / route knowledge
-Surface railways rule book
-Yard and siding layout and working
-Administrative procedures Including all policies and procedures EX: emergency procedures
-Communication protocol
