SENIOR CURATOR: CONSEVATION AND COLLECTIONS

Department: Community Development

Designation: Senior Curator: Conservation and Collections
Remuneration: R42 403.58 pm (basic salary excluding benefits)
Location: Johannesburg Art Gallery, Cnr Klein & King George Street Joubert Park

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12, plus a Tertiary qualification in Heritage Studies, Museum Studies or
    Conservation / NQF level 7;
  • 5 – 7 years working experience as a conservation officer in a museum/arts/ heritage
    environment;
  • Management experience, at least junior management level;
    Primary Function:
    Manage the conservation unit of the City of Joburg Museums to ensure international
    museum accredited standards in terms of preservation are met, including all
    administrative duties associated with managing a team of conservators. Ensure that
    all objects in the collection are protected from risk and deterioration, which might arise
    from adverse climate condition or poor storage conditions. Protect the City’s assets
    from depreciation in value and to contribute to the preservation and promotion of
    Southern Africa’s rich cultural heritage. Advise curators on conservation methods.

  • Initiate, formulate and manage core conservation programmes and activities;
  • Manage all administrative and financial matters at the museum;
  • Manage staff, schedules and activities.
  • Develop conservation manuals and policies.

  • Written and verbal and good communication skills;
  • Computer literacy including MS Office Applications;
  • Accountability;
  • High level of confidentiality and organizational skills;
  • Time management, working independently, under pressure and ability to prioritize;

Core Competencies:

  • Knowledge of conserving or restoring different materials; museum standards and practice,
    museum collection management, culture and heritage; copyright and public record;
  • Collaborative / Teamwork, Values and Integrity, Attention to detail and quality focused;
  • Customer and service Delivery management r (Batho Pele) ethics, Professionalism;
  • Impact and Influence according to City’s according to City’s protocols, Legislation and
    standards.
