JOB PURPOSE:
- To maintain a high standard of veterinary nursing care and preventative
medicine. Performs maintenance and ensures cleanliness of all facilities and equipment.
Ensures compliance to regulations within hospital operations.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Animal Medical Care and Welfare: Perform support duties of animals in medical and surgical care; Conservation and Protected Areas in conjunction with the Veterinarian and/or Head Nurse at the Zoo. These include animal observation, recording and reporting thereof; assist with any emergencies.
Efficient Hospital Operations: Perform supervision and maintenance of the clinic and wards; animal husbandry of hospital patients; incineration and carcass disposal process Implement and ensure ongoing adherence to safe, correct and ethical animal handling practices including pest control • Ensure that the staff is able to recognize abnormal behaviour.
Animal Treatments within the Quarantine Facility: Assist with quarantine import and
export consignments and processes; testing procedures; prevention of spread of disease
and regulatory compliance.
Maintenance of Facilities and Equipment: Maintain cleanliness and hygiene throughout
the hospital • Conduct maintenance of diagnostic imaging; post-mortem facility; treatment
room; surgical theatre; capture boxes and equipment.
Record Keeping: Assist with recording and inputting of veterinary records including
treatment, dispensing of medication, post-mortem and clinical pathology to international
standards • Assist with ordering equipment, medicine and stock take thereof • Ensure
effective hospital cost control.
Animal Research and Education Awareness Initiatives: Participate in the development
of conservation and other research projects including educational/ commercial/ promotional
activities; data/ sample collection and media releases.
Conservation and Protected Areas: Assist with capturing of game and escaped animals;
tagging and herding of animals including the transportation process.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance to related laws/ regulations concerning the
welfare, transporting and relocating animals • Work within World Association of Zoos &
Aquaria (WAZA) and Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZA) guidelines.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Assist with the supervision, management and training of
hospital support staff and veterinary students.
Maintain Own Productivity: Actively participate and manage own performance levels
including professional development with advances in zoological medicine and wildlife health
knowledge and practice
SHEQ, Security Monitoring and Risk: Implement and monitor JCPZ safety, health,
environmental and security policies and procedures • Implement identified risk mitigation
measures.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Diploma in Veterinary Nursing or Curing Animals
Registered Nurse with South African Veterinary Council • Minimum 2 years’ experience in
Veterinary Nursing • Demonstrated experience in handling exotic animals.
