A vacancy currently exists for a Senior Section Ranger at Garden Route National Park, Knysna. The successful candidate will report directly to the Park Manager, his/her primary responsibility will be to manage the conservation responsibilities and supervise personnel in the conservation department in the Park and Staying inside the Park.

The remuneration package includes an all-inclusive cost to company salary, based on the scale of a position with a Paterson D1 job grade, allowances and benefits as specified in the HR tariff Document and Conditions of Services of SANParks

Requirements:

  • Diploma in Nature Conservation or equivalent is essential, a B-Tech degree will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant operational experience in conservation management, of which three (3) years must be management and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of the Public Financial Management Act and Financial management experience.
  • Management, Report writing, Planning and Leadership Skills.
  • Firearm competency certificate and ability to use a wide range of firearms would serve as an added advantage.
  • A sound knowledge of the NEMPA Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office package
  • Appointment as an Environmental Management Inspector (EMI)
  • To have a working knowledge of relevant Environmental legislation such as NEMA: Protected Areas Act, Biodiversity Act, Integrated Coastal Management Act, Marine Living Resources Act and other relevant environmental legislation.
  • Driver’s licence is essential.
  • Fisheries Control Officer Certificate would serve as an advantage.
  • Skippers licence Certificate/Certificate of Competency would serve as an advantage.
  • No Criminal record-screening will be conducted. Honesty/integrity screening will be conducted.
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and other relevant legislation.
  • Good communication, writing, conflict resolution and liaison skills.

Responsibilities:

  • To plan and execute environmental conservation and ensure ecological integrity in line with the SANParks mission and vision and all relevant national legislation, as well as the Strategic and Park Management Plans, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • To ensure that the environmental ethics with regard to the protection and conservation of natural and cultural resources are upheld
  • To plan and execute environmental conservation management in line with the parks Strategic Management Plan in the conservation section of the Park
  • To promote close cooperation with neighbouring communities and other role-players as part of constituency building and economic empowerment within the region
  • To positively lead, manage and develop the Human Capital of the Section and encourage participatory management.
  • To manage, plan, coordinate and conduct effective anti-crime operations by effective use of available intelligence, manpower and equipment on a continued reactive and pro-active basis
  • Facilitate the development and management of the contractual park or any co-management park with the legal claimants of land in the park in collaboration with other departments.
  • To perform a wide range of duties in different fields of conservation and people management within a broader regional context
  • Ensure all infrastructure, vehicles and boats in the section are maintained to adequate standards.
  • Ensure compliance to finance policies and the PFMA within the conservation department.
  • Ensure legal compliance with firearms management and the firearms legislation
  • Responsibility for natural resource and cultural resource management, monitoring, and recording.
  • Application of law, order and discipline through the National Environmental Management Act, regulations, and Code of Conduct.
  • Engage with all key stakeholders in a manner that enhances the organisation’s reputation.
  • Work closely with local law enforcement and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Dealing with the tourism component of the park and upholding a safe and friendly tourist environment.
  • Manage, lead, train and motivate Marine and conservation staff.
  • Management of budget and assets of the conservation department.

Salary: R 475 127 – R 734 887
