PACHYDERMS AND BIRDS SECTION
(X2 PERMANENT) • (R13,393.47 – R18,080.32 P/M)
JOB PURPOSE: To participate and perform duties associated with animal husbandry i.e. daily care of animals(feeding, removal of waste, etc.); the maintenance of enclosures and conducts behaviour observations.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Animal Care: Adhere to all animal care procedures as per animal husbandry manual • Assist in the
loading/ off-loading of animal feed from kitchen and truck • Verify that food is prepared as per the diet sheet
- Feed animals and remove left over food accordingly • Assist Keepers in ensuring that the animal within
the allocated section is content and healthy • Handle animals and assist in restraining/ controlling problem
animals as directed by Superior • Assist in the application of animal treatments to ward off pests (e.g. flies)
under the instruction of the Veterinarian/ Nurses • Assist Veterinarians/ Nurses and other personnel with the
administration of medications or with restraint • Assist in hand rearing of new-born animals and animal training,
including performing night duties when required • Monitor the temperature of the temperature controlled
enclosures • Provide suitable browse for animals as identified by the section Curator/ Keeper • Ensure cages
and animals are properly numbered and identified • Capacitated to act in the absence of a Keeper.
Maintenance of Enclosures: Adhere to all animal care maintenance procedures • Clean and disinfect all
areas of the enclosure (e.g. night-room, blankets, food, water bowls, windows of the enclosure etc.) using
animal friendly products • Perform required cleaning and maintenance of all equipment and tools • Monitor
electric fences ensuring that they are in good working condition • Monitor, prevent and escalate holes or gaps
in the fences to prevent animal escape • Ensure that enclosures are safe, secure and clean.
Animal Observation and Record Keeping: Adhere to collection management policies, processes and
procedures • Assist with daily animal census • Conduct daily animal observation with respect to general
physical condition, signs of illness, disease and discontent, abnormal behaviour or incidents and report
thereof • Assist with recording of all animal movements i.e. feeding times, food consumed, faecal observation,
births/ deaths, behavioural changes (including reproductive behaviours), temperature of enclosure • Provide
input into animal husbandry manual as required.
Enrichment of Animal Lives: Provide enrichment for the animals within the allocated section as per
international standards as directed • Participate in the construction of enrichment structures, platforms and
jungle gyms • May provide food to animal in a manner that caters to sensory enrichment needs.
Animal Awareness, Conservation and Protected Areas: Participate in Peer education/ Zoo environmental
awareness/ education programmes including conferences of specific categories relating to Johannesburg
Zoo animals • Participate in and share observation data for research and conservation projects • Assist with
capturing of game and escaped animals; tagging and herding of animals including the transportation process.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance to related laws/ regulations concerning the welfare,
transporting and relocating animals • Work within World Association of Zoos & Aquaria (WAZA) and Pan
African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZA) guidelines.
Optimises individual and team performance: Actively participates and manages own performance levels - Ensure attendance to training and regular one-on-one meetings with Supervisor to discuss progress.
SHEQ, Security Monitoring and Risk: Provide inputs for the development/ review of SOPs for the
Department • Implement and monitor JCPZ safety, health, environmental and security policies and procedures - Implement identified risk mitigation measures.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF level 4) • Course on Animal Care,
Management or related field • Minimum 1 – 2 years’ experience in animal care or related zoo experience.
