Main Purpose of the Position:
- Provide daily newsroom leadership that encourages productivity, excellence, innovation and dialogue;
- Guide and oversee the planning and production of news and current affairs content on SABC News’ online/digital/social media platforms;
- Develop a strategy for SABC News’ Digital platforms and consult with editors to ensure a pro-active and coordinated content strategy across all SABC News platforms;
- Management of OTT platform, close liaison with other department and integrate digital as integral part of the division
- Investigate and develop new content sources and options to enrich SABC News’ online/digital/social media content offerings;
- Cost effectively plan for and manage the unit’s budget and expenses;
- Guide SABC News’ efforts to increase its web traffic and digital/social media reach and engagement;
- Adhere to the SABC’s policies, especially the News Editorial Policy, relevant industry codes of conduct, regulations, and findings for public broadcasting, online, user-generated, and digital/social media journalism and content;
- Develop, implement, and monitor the Standard Operating Procedures and style-guides;
- Optimise the use of available resources and shared services in support of the production and delivery of quality news-related content;
- Edit, curate, and stimulate interaction with news-related content online and on digital/social media sites;
- Develop and manage news-related stories that ensure optimal use of SABC News’ audio and visual content/material;
- Enhance the profile and reputation of the unit with all relevant stakeholders; and
- Introduce mechanisms to support and enhance SABC News’ online/digital/social media;
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in online/digital/social media journalism, technology, copyright and other relevant laws;
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree/and or Diploma (NQF 7/6) in Journalism, Communication, Media Studies, or relevant discipline.
- 10 years’ experience in a news and current affairs broadcasting environment, five (5) of which should be at management level with Digital News editorial experience in the publication and curation of news-related online/digital/social media content;.
- Excellent news’ sense and judgement.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- The ability to work accurately and independently in a high-pressure and deadline-driven news environment;
- The ability to write, compile and produce accurate, multimedia content and reports;
- Excellent proofreading and editing skills;
- Expert in using online/digital/social media and data-journalism tools in a newsroom;
- Personal online/digital/social media presence will be an advantage;
- The ability to lead and collaborate effectively with team members to develop their journalistic, digital and technological skills;
- A solid understanding of major online/digital/social media platforms, tools (including analytical tools) and trends
- Willingness and ability to work long, irregular, and unsociable hours, whenever necessary/required;
- A valid driver’s license.
