The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Communication and Marketing Department (CMD) seeks a highly competent Senior Videographer & Editor to join the Newsroom and Video Production unit to contribute to the delivery of excellent multimedia content.  

The main purpose of this position is to supervise, create, and combine the necessary visual, audio, graphic, and digital elements; to produce a cohesive piece of video content that offers a strong narrative and communicates a clear message that conveys the University of Cape Town’s strategic goals, vision and mission to both internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will film and edit video content, assist the Head of Video Production in guiding the look and feel of videos, and ensure that all multimedia content is delivered to expected quality standards within the deadline. 

Requirements for this position 

  • An appropriate NQF 7 or higher tertiary qualification, preferably in film production or related field. 
  • Strong evidence of video editing and videography 
  • At least five years’ combined experience as a video editor and videographer or similar role, preferably in a communications environment 
  • A demonstrable proof of quality videography and video editing across a diverse range of subjects and video types. 
  • Production and post-production supervision experience 
  • Proficiency in: 
  • Filming with a variety of cameras  
  • Location sound recording and working with sound editing software such as Adobe Audition 
  • Working with grading software and editing software  
  • Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition 
  • Experience with video archiving and data storage 
  • Ability to work under pressure, both independently and as part of a team 
  • Time-management skills with a systems-focused approach to tasks 
  • Excellent communication skills 

Knowledge of the following would be advantageous 

  • Current editorial conventions and practices  
  • Current South African media landscape, specifically in higher education 
  • South Africa’s media practices in terms of republication of content, images, videos 
  • South African laws in relation to human rights and limitations to freedom of speech 
  • Online publishing conventions specifically in relation to the publication of online news content 
  • UCT policies relating to the Communication and Marketing Department 
  • Knowledge of all live-streaming video production equipment 
  • Multi-cam technical directing skills 
  •  

Responsibilities  

Filming  

  • Take briefs and generate shot lists to ensure that relevant footage is captured 
  • Record videos using designated equipment as per the brief received 
  • Film high-quality video footage in order to promote the university and its various faculties and departments 
  • Direct small shoots 

Editing 

  • Offline video editing  
  • Grading of footage 
  • Sound editing of all videos produced by the Communication and Marketing Department  
  • Discover and implement new editing technologies/practices to improve video quality 

Production and Post-Production Supervision 

  • Oversee all aspects of filming, including quality control of all videography in the department 
  • Oversee all technical aspects of video editing, including quality control of all video editing work in the department, viewing of all rough cuts, and advising on technical changes before delivery to the Head of Department 
  • When necessary, deputize for the Head: Video Production 
  • Creatively guide the look and feel of videos to align with the university’s branding and strategy 
  • Manage post-production schedules to ensure delivery according to deadlines 

Scheduling and Planning 

  • Share information with various constituencies and record important moments in the university’s history 
  • Assist in post-production scheduling and planning to ensure delivery according to expected quality standards and deadlines 
  • Maintain project-tracking platforms and archive all production data 

Equipment and technical requirements 

  • Ensure that all necessary filming equipment and editing software is available and working as expected 
  • Acquire knowledge of all live-streaming video production equipment 
  • Acquire multi-cam technical directing skills 

The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R 580 137 and R 682 513. This is a permanent position.
