The UCT Child Development Research Laboratory (CDRL) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill a Research Nurse post on a 1-year full-time contract. The CDRL in the Division of Biomedical Engineering of the Department of Human Biology studies the effects of prenatal exposure to toxins on infant and child development.
We are seeking an experienced, dynamic individual to work on a double-blind, randomized controlled trial of a nutritional supplement in pregnant women. Although the contract will initially be for 1 year, there is potential of renewal for a further 2 to 3 years.

Requirements:

  • NQF7 (Nursing Degree equivalent) qualification
  • 3 years of experience working as a clinical nurse, including
    -At least 1 year working in a setting with obstetric care, with midwife experience, as well as recognizing and addressing obstetric emergencies
  • Experience interpreting maternal case records
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Administrative and data entry experience
  • Valid current South African Nursing Council (SANC) Registration
  • Fluency in English and Afrikaans
  • Driver’s license and access to personal car

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) procedures
  • Research training and/or experience
  • Experience working in a public hospital setting
  • Basic Life Support training
  • Integrated Management of Child Illness training
  • Experience working in a paediatric setting

Responsibilities:
Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, GCP and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), you will work with a diverse clinical research team to help ensure the project is delivered within budget and on time, including:

  • Clinical trial nursing
  • Clinical trial administration, including data recording
  • Participant recruitment & enrolment
  • Maternal interviews
  • Anthropometry and blood pressure measurements
  • Phlebotomy and blood specimen handling
  • Medical record reviews
  • Counselling participants in adherence to the trial protocol
  • General research-related tasks

The annual cost of employment, is between R300,000 and R462,822
