The Director Human Resources (HR) Client Services is the head of the client engagement/business partnering function within HR, which forms the core of the HR client centric service model adopted by UCT. HR Client Services (HRCS) is the front-line, client facing section of the HR service and represents HR to the client as part of the end-to-end HR value chain. The key purpose of HRCS is to ensure the alignment and integration of HR as part of the business strategy of UCT by creating human resource agendas and leading HR approaches with the aim of achieving the Universities strategic objectives. At UCT, our operational structure is devolved, encompassing both academic and administrative business units. The incumbent of this role is accountable to the Executive Director for HR.
Requirements for the job:
- A NQF 8 (or above) qualification, preferably in HR or a relevant discipline
- A minimum of 10 years’ broad experience in HR, of which a minimum of 5 years should be at a senior management level in a large scale, complex HR generalist environment.
- Comprehensive exposure and experience of current legislation, policies governing HR practice and industry best practice.
- Experience in creating effective communication platforms to drive effective service delivery.
- Strategic capability (policy/process design & formulation) and outlook.
- Extensive human resource management experience in a unionised environment.
- Experience of managing, leading and developing professional HR teams within a complex and dynamic working environment.
- Experience of delivering measurable and visible improvements in HR service quality and fostering a strong customer service ethic.
- Experience of analysing, using, and presenting complex people information in a variety of formats to a range of audiences.
- Project management experience where innovative HR solutions have been delivered, both personally and through others.
- Experience in leading through change and knowledge of change management principles and methodologies in a complex environment.
The following will be advantageous:
- Experience with engaging and liaising with external stakeholders.
- Membership of SABPP/SASLAW or relevant organisations would be advantageous.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and provide end to end oversight to the HRCS team;
- Ensure that all programs, procedures, approaches adopted, and advice provided to clients by HRCS remain aligned and further the achievement of the UCT Vision, Strategy and Values;
- Collaborate with, guide as well as spearhead, with the UCT leaders, executives, and the relevant HR centers of excellence the development of fit for purpose HR strategies, policies and approaches, to attract, develop, and retain talent in the Faculties/Professional, Administrative Support & Service staff (PASS) Departments;
- Act as a strategic thought partner to the executive and senior management to ensure translation of business objectives to human capital strategies;
- Ensure HR’s immersion in the client base and the provision of HR advice to clients in multiple departments, faculties, research institutes;
- Partner with the HR leadership team on planning and delivering HR programs and services to the business;
- Mitigate risk to UCT and operate as a trusted advisor to the executive and senior management serving as the expert on people and organizational issues;
- Navigate challenges in the dynamic University space and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with significant change; employing only the necessary HR processes that enable the organization to innovate and grow; and
- Sound judgement and the ability to weigh up the effects of a decision and evaluate the likely knock-on effects. To consider alternatives and to recognise the sensitivities and risks, and frame decisions to take account of them.
The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R1 205 749 and R1 418 527.

We are currently seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the permanent position of Assistant Maintenance Manager within the Properties and Services Maintenance Department. This appointment is urgently needed to support the efficient operation and upkeep of our university campus. As the Assistant Maintenance Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the Properties and Services Maintenance Department, ensuring the continued functionality and safety of all fixed services and assets across the campus. This role demands a confident, self-motivated individual with exceptional organizational abilities, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service.
Requirements for the job:
- Possess a relevant diploma in the Engineering or Built Environment Field (NQF Level 6) supported by 7 years relevant experience in building and plumbing works, with secondary experience in mechanical and electrical works, after graduation, of which at least 5 years were at the operational level and 2 years were at the supervisory or management level.
- OR be an Artisan with a minimum NTC3 qualification (NQF Level 4) or deemed equivalent, along with successful completion of an appropriate apprenticeship and passing of a recognized industry trade test. Supported by 8 years of primary experience in building and plumbing works, with secondary experience in mechanical and electrical works, after successful completion of a trade test, of which 5 years were at the operational level and 3 years were at the supervisory or management level.
- Hold a valid code EB Driver’s License.
- Possesses computer literacy with intermediate/advanced proficiency in MS Excel and Outlook.
- Be medically fit, demonstrating no difficulty with walking, hearing, eyesight, climbing steps, or entering confined spaces, and have no fear of heights.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act No 85 of 1993.
- Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, work effectively in a team or independently with minimal supervision.
- Be available after hours in instances of emergency.

Responsibilities include:
- Oversee and coordinate all aspects of preventative, planned, and unplanned maintenance activities across various campus buildings.
- Develop and implement maintenance schedules to ensure optimal functioning of facilities and equipment.
- Monitor and assess the condition of campus buildings, identifying areas for improvement or repair.
- Manage human resources including scheduling, training, and performance evaluations for maintenance staff.
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.

Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D)

The Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) is an interdisciplinary, soft-funded research unit at the University of Cape Town. H3D staff and laboratories are situated across three sites on UCT Campus. H3D is seeking to appoint an experienced Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Investigator on a 3-year contract. This position will lead the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools to support the translational research teams discovering and developing innovative, lifesaving medicines across multiple disease areas and provide AI/ML support to the drug discovery teams at H3D.
Requirements:
- PhD in computer science, computational chemistry, or a related field.
- 2 or more years post-PhD industrial or academic experience in a drug discovery research group, delivering actionable AI-based insights across multiple drug discovery projects and research teams.
- Evidence of skills transfer and training, e.g. facilitating workshops and developing the associated teaching resources, running training sessions, frequent scientific communication/presentation.
- Strong programming skills across multiple programming languages, particularly Python, including proficiency with Object-Oriented Programming.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Good understanding of the application of cheminformatics to drug discovery.
Advantages:
- Working knowledge of molecular dynamics software and theory.
- Strong track-record in translational, multidisciplinary team-based research.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conceptualise, lead, and execute computational research projects related to the application of AI/ML tools for drug discovery and development (data collection, cleaning, and analysis; developing and maintaining code; model development; publication of results; translation of findings).
- Maximise impact of AI/ML methodologies by identifying suitable projects and applying relevant solutions to provide actionable data-driven insights.
- Train staff members/postdocs/students/interns in the utilisation of the relevant tools and support the interpretation of results.
- Co-ordinate project activities with a multi-disciplinary team of microbiologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, medicinal chemists and pharmacologists, as well as external collaborators.
- Prepare clear presentations, reports, and publications for internal and external peer-review.
- Comply with standard operating procedures for data management.
- Supervision of postdocs, students and junior staff may be required.
