Life Orientation Teacher (FET Phase) – Woodhill College

The responsibilities are:

Curriculum planning, administration and academics 

  • Submit subject specific dates regarding the curriculum to the Academic head / Head of High School
  • Update subject policies in line with IEB and CURRO subject requirements
  • Liaise with CURRO head office subject specialist throughout the academic year
  • Manage planning for the subject across the whole school (yearly, termly, assessments)
  • Set the curriculum requirements for each grade to support planning.
  • Provide subject specific guidance in terms of how to teach the curriculum.
  • Provide guidance and plans with regards to the logical order of teaching certain concepts
  • Provide guidance to teachers of the subject relating to areas of difficulty for pupils and misconceptions
  • Manage the CURRO requirements to set papers and systemic tests across the subject
  • Moderation (pre and post) of assessment tools
  • Provide direction relating to the vision of the school with regards to the subject
  • Take responsibility for the academic standard of the subject
  • Implement and manage a centralised filing system across the school for the subject (hard copy or electronic) based on criteria relating to IEB or CURRO
  • Work within budget to select the appropriate textbooks, resources and stationery for each grade and for the staff and make selections of relevant materials

  • Pastoral role in department and mediation between staff in the event of issues
  • Mentor and upskill of subject teachers through training (internal and external) and provide guidance on how to encourage pupils to gain a love for the subject

  • Oversee and manage subject teacher planning and classroom / learning areas management

  • Provide recommendations relating to the top pupils in the subject for awards.
  • Manage the implementation of the extra lesson programme for the subject and maintain records.
  • General communication with parents relating to the subject.

Reporting and meetings      

  • Compile analysis sheet of results termly for each grade.
  • Analyse results including averages and assess alignment to mandate.
  • Submit to Academic Head/Head of High School with recommendations and action plan.
  • Checking of termly report for consistency and accuracy including review of personalised comments and feedback.
  • Collaboration with other IEB CURROs including moderation of other school’s work and sharing of best practice.

Planning and own class management     

  • Plan and set up assessment roster for the term.
  • Set up the demarcation for each assessment during the term as per the grade.
  • Monitor and adjust planning throughout the term as per unforeseen events.
  • Set up and design of classroom / Learning Area for optimal performance of class and based on specific needs.
  • Setting of rules and boundaries to manage discipline.
  • Communication and relationship building with pupils and parents (newsletters, sporting letters, outings letters etc.).

Assessment process and homework management       

  • Setting and moderation (pre and post) of assessments including formal (FAT) and continuous (CAS).
  • Prepare revision packs, notes and lessons.

The responsibilities are

Sports planning and administrations        

  • Review and plan the coaching timetable for pre-primary and primary
  • Assign coaches to coaching activities and plans
  • Manage communications to parents regarding sports activities
  • Manage the process of indemnity and permission slips for all sporting events that are being coached
  • Run and plan the sports awards process
  • Attend and participate in AGMS for all relevant sports in the district
