Job Purpose
To perform activities/ tasks associated with the personal safety and protection of staff and officials of the eThekwini Municipality, citizens of the community, property and equipment, by
reactionary enforcement and attending to processes aimed at ensuring compliance with laws, by-laws regulations and policies in order to ensure any action or situation threatening the safety of officials, citizens, property and equipment are identified and promptly attended to.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Protecting Municipal officials, employees and securing Municipal buildings, installation,property, (movable and immovable) as well as equipment and plant providing an
    escorting service to volatile and eliminating any identified threats.
  • Ensuring the safety and safekeeping of all unit firearms, ammunition, batons, handcuffs, ect. Whist on duty and carry such items, as well as completion of the required registrars when reporting for duty and ending the shift
  • Responsible to all criminal activities in progress/ completed, i.e. hijacking, robberies, burglaries, etc
  • Providing tactical support to SAPS and Metropolitan police for executing high risk warrants, transporting of suspects to detention facilities, providing support to disaster
    management and internal and external protection and security services
  • Identifying the various locations where these threats/ possible threats may emanate from.
  • Respond to all complaints, prioritizing issues in terms of risk and importance
  • Exercise the power of a Peace Officer in terms of section 41 and 42 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 (As amended)
  • Attending court as and when necessary to give evidence and assist with legal requirements in order to prosecute violators
  • Under supervision, provide a rapid response service in the event of threats/ possible threats or violent situations in order to safeguard the lives of employees, citizens,
    property, residences or equipment
  • Follow instructions of the superior and undertakes activities/ tasks associated with the functionality when there is illegal land invasion or the threats of land invasion.

Essential Requirements

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent.
  • SASSETA or SAQA accredited National Certificate (NQF Level 5) in Security Management or Practice.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate Level 1.
  • Peace Officer’s certificate (certified by SAPS) or to be obtained within 1 year from date of appointment.
  • Valid Firearm Competency certificate (handgun, shotgun or rifle).
  • Valid PSIRA registered Grade B certificate.
  • Valid motor vehicle driving license
  • 2 years relevant experience in the Security, Police, Military or Law Enforcement environment.

Preferred Requirements

  • Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Security Management or Policing or any other related and equivalent qualification.
  • 3 years relevant experience in the Security, Police, Military or Law Enforcement environment.

Special Conditions
Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the handling and use of fire-arms.
Required to work long hours under arduous conditions and be prepared to carry out standby duties after hours and overtime duties as and when required.
The post of section Leader is interchangeable with all Section Leader posts within Security Management unit.
The essential qualifications to be applicable to all new Section Leaders appointed from the date that the new grade is authorise

Job Purpose
To protect council buildings, installations, property, and employees at their places of work.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Co-ordinates and controls key dimensions associated with the provision of a service.
  • Supervises and controls outcomes associated with utilization, productivity and performance of personnel within the section.
  • Performs functions associated with assessing the risk and volatility in certain situations which may cause harm to people, property and equipment.
  • Exercises the powers of a Peace Officer in terms of sections 41 and 42 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 (As amended).
  • Escorts and rapid response.
  • Undertakes activities/tasks associated with the functionality when there is illegal land invasion or the threat of land invasion.
  • Provides and inspection and security function at protected sites.
  • Provides static protection at the City Hall and its vicinity.
  • Co-ordinates and controls key dimensions and requirements associated with the provision of a protection service for VIPs.
  • Co-ordinates specific administrative and reporting requirements associated with the key performance and result indicators of the functionality.
  • Attends to the application of specific maintenance sequences with respect to equipment and vehicles
