The role:
The Section Rock Engineer is accountable for the implementation and coordination of rock engineering interventions and processes as well as the application of systems and processes aligned to best practice, to optimise safe extraction through advice and support. The Section Rock Engineer provides assistance to the operational personnel with design layouts and support systems that meet operational requirements, ensuring adherence to all relevant legislation, standards and codes of practices.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Ensure effective Rock Engineering service delivery and support to the Mining Operations, Mine Planning, Survey and Geology sections
- Ensure adherence to organisational best practice and legislative requirements
- Actively participate in creating a safe mining environment
- Maintain effective stakeholder relationships
- Ensure successful teamwork and supervision of Rock Engineering resources
- Continuous improvement of the Rock Engineering function
- Effectively monitor and control Rock Engineering activities
- Develop quality controls to ensure alignment of operational Rock Engineering interventions, systems and processes with standardization requirements as well as policies, procedures and operating standards
- Analyse and interpret Rock Engineering data and information to identify changes in the production environment, defects and safety risks
- Ensure effective service delivery and support to ensure a productive mining environment
- Conduct regular inspections and ensure problems are addressed proactively and aligned with Rock Engineering requirements
- Ensure that operating standards, policies and procedures are appropriate and clearly understood
- Ensure that all activities are performed in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act, and Minerals Act
- Provide coaching and advice to operational stakeholders related to strata control services and support aligned to best practices
- Provide input into the development of safety standards, processes, policies and procedures
Requirements:
- BSc Degree Degree/Diploma in Mining Engineering or a related science degree (NQF Level 7)
- Chamber of Mines Rock Mechanics Certificate: Coal
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Strata Control/Rock Engineering in the coal mining industry
- Registered as a Rock Engineer with SANIRE
- Understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act and Minerals and Energy Act
- Knowledge of Rock Engineering practices, principles, processes, best practices and new technologies
- Computer literacy (MS Office and relevant Rock Engineering Packages)
- Valid K53 driver’s license
- In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness

The role:
The Technical Expeditor is responsible for ensuring that there is compliance by suppliers to contracts on all equipment repairs so that repairs are performed according to agree upon standards and turnaround time. They must also ensure that end users comply to repair contracts by making use of contracted and approved repairers. This role is also accountable for the processes required to achieve effective repairable item tracing within the ERP. The Technical Expediter obtains and provides input into the planning of major rebuilds and overhauls on all operational machinery in as far as the provision and planning of repairable items is concerned.
The role will also be responsible to monitor and maintain equipment and components under repair, ensuring the turn-around time, quality and cost is acceptable while providing communication to the end user.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Ensure the use of contracted Suppliers where Where there is a need for a contract to be negotiated, assist with the initiation of the process in line with Supply Chain
- Ensure suppliers comply with contractual agreements for the repairing of items
- Assist with the annual review of contract details
- Ensure that the warranty process is properly applied, and actions identified to prevent repeated failures
- Ensure all required information including work order details are available when sending a component to a Supplier
- Continuous tracking of the progress on the repair of the component with the Supplier and follow-up on outstanding repairs
- Ensure that newly repaired components match machinery requirements and perform general quality inspections on repairs
- Identify and maintain optimum stock levels of subassemblies through producing and reviewing the critical items list and highlighting critical items that have been flagged as having low stock levels
- Expedite orders on a daily and weekly basis ensuring that Suppliers meet their delivery requirements and ensure that items are received as per the order regarding quantity, type and price
- Provide input into major rebuilds and overhauls of machinery with respect to the planning, repair and quality of major component rebuilds or replacements
- Overview scope of work for rebuilds/interventions to be performed by Suppliers
- Meetings with OEMs to determine their progress on work-in-progress as well as monitor the quality of work performed and resolve any issues that arise
- Assist with providing information into annual budgets regarding repair costs and overhauls
- Ensure that the management of the sub assembly store is aligned with the required standards
- Ensure approved repairers gets onboarded in line with Seriti’s Approved Repairer process
- Ensure the proper audit trail gets maintained in the ERP for all repairs including failure reports, C1, Quote and waybills
Requirements:
- Recognized Trade Test (Electrical / Mechanical)
- National N3 certificate or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years’ experience coupled with 3 years of exposure to Condition Monitoring Programs, Failure Analysis, Defect Elimination and Work Management
- Experience in the maintenance of OC Mining and/or Coal Processing Plants machinery and equipment
- Good understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including MHSA and Minerals and Energy Act
- Strong technical knowledge of engineering aspects
- Strong understanding OC Mining Machinery
- In depth knowledge of technical specifications of equipment
- Communication Skills – fluent in English (written and verbal)
