AI Engineer

Job Description

The ALMA (Asset Liability Management Analytics) team in Group Treasury is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the ALMA application, as well as providing support to Group Treasury on data modelling, data engineering, analytics, and quantitative analysis. The ALMA application sources transaction data, along with associated market, party, and reference data from across the FirstRand group. It produces analytics for funds transfer pricing, behavioral analysis, and regulatory and management reporting, as well as for other areas within Group Treasury. The AI Engineer will be responsible for developing, deploying, and maintaining data science models and AI agents within FirstRand Bank Group Treasury. This role is crucial for enhancing the treasury’s analytic capabilities, monitoring and analyzing analytic processes that compute metrics for asset and liability management (ALM), and using this data and other data assets to extract analysis.
To contribute to the design, development, and deployment of machine learning models, LLMs, and AI systems, with growing responsibilities in agentic systems and conversational AI. To work independently to implement and optimize AI solutions in collaboration with senior engineers and cross-functional teams.
To participate in the building and deployment of ML models, experimenting with LLMs and agents, and supporting AI integration into production environments.

  • Support the development and fine-tuning of AI/ML models, including LLMs and basic conversational agents.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of data pipelines and model evaluation workflows.
  • Collaborate on the design and prototyping of agentic tools and LLM-powered applications.
  • Help debug and improve models with a focus on performance, accuracy, and reliability.
  • Participate in prompt engineering and response optimization exercises.
  • Assist with the integration of AI models into production systems under guidance from senior engineers.

Education/Qualifications

  • B Com, BSc or finance qualifications with 2 – 3-year work experience within a banking or merchant banking environment
  • Money Market and Foreign Exchange market experience would be beneficial.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of financial instruments is critical for success in the role.

  • Support in the preparation of reports to the Audit Committee.
  • Participate in and prepare comment letters to the IASB on a timely basis.
  • Creating, implementing, and maintaining IFRS technical accounting group policies by staying up to date with developments in both the local industry and IFRS through internal research and involvement on local topic teams and market interest.

  • Build relationships that allow for the managing of expectations; the sharing of knowledge and diverse insights; and the creation of buy-in across the IFRS technical and finance community.
  • Gather relevant information (contracts, communications with business) to advise on appropriate accounting treatment in relation to the accounting transaction or query by undertaking accounting research and the preparation of technical accounting memos.        
  • Identify interconnected problems, determine its impact and use to develop best fit alternatives, driving best practice solutions.
  • Review, and where necessary, participant in the Group’s preparation of financial statements including footnote preparation, support of disclosures, research for presentations etc.  
  • Review reporting schedules prepared by the group at interim and year end, relating to technical disclosure schedules, as well as new schedules in the first year of adoption of new accounting standards.
