The Research Impact Division, within the HSRC, seeks to on a Freelancer Basis, Language Editors.

Minimum Requirements
Key requirements

A minimum qualification of a completed undergraduate degree/diploma in language services or a related discipline

Ability to edit English text at the level of a 1st language English speaker and willingness to demonstrate this capability in a test tracking changes in a Word document.

3 years’ English language editing experience, over and above any general writing experience

Preferably experience as member of a newspaper or magazine subediting team OR experience in editing academic, technical or scientific content to be accessible to the general public

Proficiency in one South African language other than English

Duties & Responsibilities
Key responsibilities

Language editing for the Word version of the policy briefs, which is normally between about 1500 and 3 000 words

Editing includes checking grammar, sentence structure, spelling errors, lack of clarity and inconsistencies in the text, as well as text cuts to an optimal word count.

Writing and editing of headlines where needed

Choosing pull quotes where needed

Checking whether graphics make sense

Generally focusing on finer details throughout the document

Minimum qualification of a PhD in public policy or related discipline
A Master’s in either Law, public policy or science communication would b considered for applicants with related experience;
Experience in facilitating a policy brief training workshop
Have evaluated policy briefs before
Have published a policy brief or related science-policy engagement publication
Proficiency in English and one other South African language

Review final drafts of Policy Briefs
Hold feedback sessions with authors
Advice on the dissemination strategy
Facilitate policy brief writing workshops for researchers and policymakers

Honours degree in Accounting will be an added advantage
The candidate should have served Accounting Articles (Signed off)
Professional designation such as ACCA or ACMA/CIMA/CA (SA) will be highly advantageous;
3-5 Years professional experience in Financial and Accounting field, including leadership, general management, operational responsibility in a large corporate/public sector organisation, and staff management;
Experience gained within the Project based environment will be highly advantageous
Additional Requirements
Ability to manage a team of accountants;
Good written and verbal communication skills including compiling reports;
Project management experience and adhering to deadlines;
Commitment to integrity, customer service focused, attention to detail, performance and results driver, decision making, problem solving, and ability to work with minimum supervision;
Flexibility to operate as a member of the team, share knowledge and transfer of skills to colleagues; and

The Supervisor: Accounting’s role shall be required to be but not limited to –

and accurate reporting in order to ensure effective and efficient management of finances;

financial and managerial reporting, forecasting, and budgeting;

and Cost and Project Accounting.

Technical Competenes
Description Knowledge of:

Public Financial Management Act;
Treasury Regulations;
Financial Management Systems such as SAGE 300;
Budget and revenue generation models in Corporate/ Public Sector environment;
Financial Management Framework in the Corporate/ Public Sector environment;
Knowledge of PFMA prescribed GRAP Accounting standards;
Key Financial legislation, policies, systems, processes, and procedures; and
Financial management within the Corporate / Public
