Specialist – Technical Support

This role requires an in-depth knowledge of lubricants, formulations, specifications and their application is essential. As is the knowledge of the Mining, Construction, Transport and Power Generation industries, their processes and equipment. This allows the Technical Specialist to be seen as an expert in their field and be able to identify and offer improvement solutions to customers that offer value.

  • Responsible for in field technical services aligned with key segment focus in Mining & Construction.
  • Responsibility of being Subject Matter Expert (SME) on allocated segment/industry i.e. Power generation, Transport etc.
  • Participates in key industry associations. Represent Astron Energy at industry associations and other related forums.
  • Works across channels and customers. Coordinates between Technology, Marketing, Sales and customers around product specifications, quality and integrity issues.
  • Ensure continuous improvement at customer sites. Manage, identify, introduce, implement, document and present customer value opportunities.
  • Leverage industry knowledge and knowledge of product capabilities to identify and pursue highest value opportunities.
  • Improve customers’ total cost of ownership and equipment availability.
  • Conduct best in class survey, lubricant surveys, introduce new products & technologies.
  • Manage extended drain projects, product trials, Isoclean projects and Root Cause Failure Analysis.
  • Identify up-sell and value based selling opportunities.
  • Develop proof of performance marketing documents.
  • Develop and manage product line strategy.
  • Identify, develop and introduce fit for purpose sales tools.
  • Manage and deliver internal and external lubricant and industry training, including technical training of junior technical staff.
  • Develop technical competency of both Internal Sales Teams and Distributor
  • Oversee and execute the strategy for obtaining official Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) approvals for proprietary lubricant formulations.
  • Manage individual account technical strategy planning and development of customer engagement plan to achieving sales volume targets.
  • Sign-off all marketing communications and documents – technical aspects

This position is very hands on so practical experience (mechanical) is very important in addition to the theoretical knowledge. An in-depth knowledge of lubricants, formulations, specifications and their application is essential. As is knowledge of the Mining, Construction, Transport and Power Generation industries, their processes and equipment. Qualifications

  • 4 year Mechanical Engineering Degree  (NQF 7) OR
  • 3 year Mechanical Engineering Diploma (NQF 6) plus 3 year Mechanical Trade qualification.

Plus

  • Desirable – CLS (Certified Lubrication Specialist)
  • Completed 5 day SAIT “Introduction to Lubrication Engineering” or similar
  • Completed Wear check Fundamentals of lubrication and oil analysis 2-day course and Report interpretation 1-day course or similar.
  • Understand Fundamentals of Filtration

Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 yrs lubricants field experience within the Petroleum industry. Experience in Mining, Transport, Construction and Power Generation sectors.
  • Proven ability to identify and build key relationships that contribute to high-class business results
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Process Operator

Operate the Process (on the plant, in allocated zone):

  • Perform first line equipment surveillance and monitoring
  • Conduct routine plant checks
  • Follow standard operating procedure when performing routine duties, start-up, shutdown, and emergency scenarios
  • Commission/decommission equipment or process plant
  • Timeously, report equipment or process deviations. Communicate with the Console Operator and Shift Team Lead
  • Conduct plant basic housekeeping
  • Perform emergency response duties during the emergency scenarios. Operators will be trained accordingly and certified as Shift Emergency Team (SERT)
  • Perform adhoc duties assigned by the Shift Team Lead

Maintain Plant & Equipment:

  • Report equipment deviations and breakdowns
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance
  • Issue permits for maintenance work
  • Support during equipment maintenance
  • Ensure that the maintenance is executed as per safety standards
  • Perform minor on-shift maintenance activities such as:
  • Pump & valve lubrication, changing strainers (up to 8”)
  • Swinging small blinds
  • Tighten leaking flanges up to 6″
  • Changing pressure gauges
  • Clean gauge glasses and oil guns
  • General plant housekeeping
  • Unplug bleeders
  • Connect utility hoses
  • Install bar plugs
  • Signage installation
  • Pump vibration monitoring
  • Small steam trap replacement
  • Hose pressure test
  • Electrical isolation on low voltage equipment
  • Instrumentation zero checking
  • Conduct Pre-Start-up Safety Review after maintenance work is complete

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF INFORMATION

  • Record and document plant and equipment conditions, communicate plant status and condition timeously to Console Operator, Shift Team Lead and Refinery Shift Lead
  • Write up and read logbooks and communicate with the handover shift

HANDLING OF MATERIALS AND LAB TESTING & QUALITY

  • Draw routine/non-routine samples for the laboratory, complete documentation for lab samples, check stock of consumables and compare with levels, make up of chemicals. Carry out basic lab testing
  • Perform quality inspections and make adjustments to restore quality, in consultation with the Console Operator

HES (Health, Environment & Safety) & EMERGENCIES

  • Complete routine checks of safety equipment
  • Perform plant inspections, report, and address any unsafe or hazardous conditions
  • Identify fugitive emissions, repair/tighten where practical and report where necessary, for follow up
  • Perform emergency drills and participate in emergency response teams, understand, and follow safety indicators and emergency procedures.  Assist other areas of the plant during emergencies
  • During an emergency, operators will be required to perform emergency response duties. Operators will be trained accordingly and certified as Shift Emergency Response Team (SERT).

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Work well with other outside or Process Operators, Console Operators, Shift Team Lead and Refinery Shift Leads, to ensure good teamwork
  • Mentor and coach new and existing operators

Training

  • Process Operators are expected to progress training with a target to be fully qualified in their areas.
  • To maintain competency, Process Operators will rotate across the process field units.
  • Process Operators will be requalified every 3 years.

Shift Handover

  • Complete handover as per the handover protocols
  • Start of shift time is a per the shift rules

Professional Qualification and Certifications:

  • Matric with Mathematics and Physical Science
  • Tertiary qualification in engineering will be advantageous 

Work Experience:  

  • Oil and Gas Refinery Process Unit Operations Qualifications or equivalent qualification and/or other relevant experience to demonstrate ability to do the job

Engineer – Materials & Corrosion

Reporting to the Lead, Fixed Equipment Integrity, the Materials / Corrosion Engineer leads efforts to ensure the integrity, reliability, and longevity
of materials used in industrial systems their knowledge in the Bussiness Unit. This role involves advanced analysis of material performance, corrosion mechanisms, and mitigation strategies. The materials/corrosion engineer commonly acts as a consulting resource to others across business unit. As they grow in expertise, they increasingly participate in an informal network of their peers in Materials & Corrosion. They become familiar with the senior engineers in the company and consult & plan with them regularly.

Key Roles and Responsibilities • Materials Selection & Evaluation • Recommend suitable materials for specific applications based on mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. • Conduct failure analysis and root cause investigations, using Company Materials Labs or third-party labs • Applies his/her knowledge to all Facility Engineering equipment, such as Refinery Fixed Equipment and Piping Systems • Welding design review and problem solving • Equipment repair, including materials properties input for fitness for service • Materials & corrosion risk-based inspection analysis • Analysis and inspection of Refractories and Advice on Repair Strategies • Provides SME advice on Companies Welding and Refractory Heat treatment Requirements to Third parties • Provides SME advice on Coatings as per Company requirements • Evaluates Materials requirements as per MOC (Management of Change) requirements for both Capital and Maintenance Projects • Advice on Design and implementation of corrosion protection systems (e.g., cathodic protection, coatings). • Develop corrosion monitoring programs and interpret data (e.g. IOW development and settings) • Provides Technical Leadership • Provide expert guidance to multidisciplinary teams on materials and corrosion issues. • Use industry best practices and Networking to improve material performance and reduce lifecycle costs. • Keep abreast and advice Company of Best Practices and Standards • Ensure adherence to international standards (e.g., NACE, ASTM, ISO, API). • Provide support during company audits, certifications, and regulatory compliance. • Provide materials/corrosion SME support for Capital and Maintenance Project Initiatives • Manage budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships related to materials engineering. Process and systems best practise compliance and guidance.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelors or Masters in Material Science / BSc in Materials Engineering / Metallurgy or B-Eng

Experience – 8+ Experience in Materials/Corrosion Engineering preferably in the Oil and Gas industry

Certifications – API 571/ 579/580/581 & NACE CP Level II/III Advantageous

Soft Skills – Leadership/Communication/Analytical Thinking/ Cross Functional Collaboration/Ability to prioritise, make thinking visible and manage pressure around competing deliverables. Can communicate appropriately at Senior Management, peers, Inspection and operations stakeholders levels.

Technical Skill Set Materials Engineer must have developed experience and have a broad and in-depth knowledge of materials and corrosion. Skills include the following: • Materials properties, • Fabrication methods and their effects on properties, • Welding processes + PWHT and their effects, • Corrosion mechanisms and mitigation methods, • Application of chemical inhibition. • Understanding of materials degradation mechanisms. • Materials properties input for fitness for service analyses. • Fracture mechanics analysis, including testing. Knowledge of chemistry and microstructure • effects on toughness. • Welding and Refractory Heat Treatment Requirements • Coating Systems Requirements • Technical Report Writing.

Senior Credit Analyst

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Corporate: For complex and large exposure accounts, obtain financial statements, credit agency reports and other pertinent information relating to the customer, to complete comprehensive credit reviews.
  • Retail: Ability to sanction and assess business plans of new Retail clients and able to work in a pressure high volume environment.
  • Risk Assessment:
  • Core part of the role includes performing risk assessment of new and existing customers achieved through assessment and analysis of credit life cycle, i.e.
    • quantitative and qualitative evaluation of respective customers, about historic financial performance and forecasted cashflows, competitive positioning, historic financial performance and forecasted cashflows,
    • Knowledge of corporate credit ratings methodology;
    • inherent micro/macro risks (Business Acumen) and
    • other information available to determine appropriate credit risk (secured/unsecured/ESG factors).
  • Provide outcome and recommendations to relevant stakeholders and decision makers, considering customer value proposition in respect of credit risk/profitability reward (economic modelling tool) within the relevant SLA on Corporate and Retail
  • Assist in Structuring:
  • Liaise with respective stakeholders to provide innovative Credit advice and solutions.
  • Determines appropriate credit lines and security requirements. 
  • Non performing accounts:
  • Works with customer, financial institutions, legal, etc. to determine appropriate security required
  • Account Handling: Monitors account exposures proactively and takes appropriate action relating to credit violations.
  • Attend and participate the internal Credit Committee meetings and actively participates in discussions.
  • Stakeholder management: Works closely with customer, Account Manager, and other stakeholders in resolving payment disputes, past dues,  Makes value added customer visits with the Account Manager as needed.
  • Periodically participates in Business Unit (Customer Facing) meetings providing credit perspective
  • Reporting: Provides Business Unit management with monthly report of credit metrics, high risk accounts, and action being taken. 
  • Compliance and Sanctioning: Ensures compliance with all Corporate policies, internal control and Sox reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • CA(SA) or equivalent qualification or more than 10 years Corporate Credit Experience or
  • Experience in both Corporate Credit (min 5 years) and Retail Credit (Min 5 years)
  • Excellent analytical skills and Attention to detail in order to understand credit violations risks (e.g. track and anticipate credit risk prevalent to individual customer and to specific industries, recommend course of action to prevent further credit violations, ability to understand various forms of security and collateral available from customers) is critical.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to effectively engage with customers and internal stakeholders (incl. senior management) on varying levels of business, financial and credit related complexities.
  • Prior experience with credit management functions as a sanctioner/ credit Mandate is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience in supervising teams (5 years) preferred.
  • Being able to perform standby duties on rotation basis.
  • Experience in Petrochemical Industry preferred.
  • Strong financial acumen – comfortable working with and assessing customer Financials i.e. Income statement, Balance Sheet, cash Flow Statement, Forecasted Projections.
  • Fully conversant with IFRS standards (IFRS9) and other regulatory standards relating to Credits function.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Advanced Excel skills, SAP4Hana
  • Ability to work under pressure, working to tight deadlines and independently manage several different tasks, as well as be able to switch priorities at short notice.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver creative and innovative solutions to mitigate credit risk.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of both internal and external customers and proactively manages expectations.
