ROLE SUMMARY

  • The Clinical Engineering Intern role is intended for advanced skills development for Clinical Engineering graduates, in the management and maintenance of clinical equipment and other aspects of clinical engineering.
  • The role will focus on enhancing the incumbent’s workplace skills, applied knowledge and ability to build effective relationships during the internship program.

KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION

CLINICAL ENGINEERING FUNCTIONAL SUPPORT

  • Support implementation of effective processes and systems to comply with Netcare policy and procedure.
  • Ensure that maintenance requests for clinical devices are reported as per Netcare Policy and procedure, responded to and actioned effectively.
  • Assist with effective Incident Management and Root Cause analysis for clinical equipment. Gaps identified are effectively addressed.
  • Assist with vendor performance management to ensure required quality outputs are met.

BUDGET PLANNING AND CONTROL (OPEX)

  • Provide input to Clinical engineering Technician/Manager on the detailed planned maintenance forecast and critical spares requirements in order to formulate the budget as per OEM requirements.
  • Comply with management systems and processes to ensure effective cost control without compromising patient safety and legislative requirements.
  • Assist with the Identification of critical spares to be included in the technical stock management system to ensure up time for clinical equipment while minimising downtime and cost.
  • Assist with supporting equipment life cycle assessment for maintenance decision making purposes.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

  • Assist with the implementation of Clinical Engineering initiatives to optimise medical equipment key performance indicators (e.g. equipment failure and root cause analysis, maintenance costs, cost of ownership, utilisation and reliability).
  • Where applicable, evaluate National and/or hospital projects implemented, and provide status reports to Key stakeholders.
  • Comply with all internal and external audit requirements.
  • Inspect all vendor maintenance documentation for completeness and ensure certificates are traceable as part of accepting outsourced work.  All follow up actions are attended to promptly.  
  • Ensure all assigned work orders (reactive and preventative) are completed accurately and in full (e.g. reflects spares used, labour involved, associated costs, tasks performed/ actions taken, time spent) in order for the information to be processed on the CMSS by the Technical Clerk.
  • Assist with Identifying needs and facilitate training in conjunction with unit managers for clinical equipment end users (e.g. Nursing, clinicians etc) based on equipment performance and usage trends.

CLINICAL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

  • Conduct effective planning, scheduling and execution of preventative maintenance to ensure compliance with the service due dates.     
  • Assist with ensuring the accuracy of CMMS database by conducting equipment verification in line with Netcare requirements. All deviations/corrections to the CMMS are updated via the Technical Clerk in line with the relevant Netcare processes.
  • Inspect and accept service certificates from contractors, including but not limited to ensuring tests and corresponding data is completed correctly at the correct intervals of service as per OEM requirements.
  • Comply with critical spares stock management processes to minimize clinical equipment downtime and maintain the stock management system.
  • Comply with Service level agreement requirements (E.g. Maintenance, Supplier, Placement Agreements) to ensure contracted deliverables are achieved.
  • Diagnose equipment failure, perform repairs, installations and inspections, utilising the relevant test equipment, according to procedures that comply with the standards and recommendations of the manufacturers and/or governing agencies as well as Netcare requirements.
  • Ensure all new clinical equipment is commissioned and barcoded in line with Netcare Policy, and all relevant acceptance documentation is retained.

CLINICAL EQUIPMENT INTEGRATION

  • Ensure effective understanding of integration methodology and the setup applicable to the various types of device integration in the facility to ensure optimal integration is achieved for connected devices.
  • Ensure successful medical equipment integration on the Netcare Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system through appropriate medical equipment planning, selection and purchasing, co-ordination with key members, control, risk assessment and trend analysis, monitoring and verification mechanisms.
  • Ensure the effective implementation of all Netcare EMR Policies and procedures.
  • Drive the effective integration and uptime of connected medical devices by ensuring relevant preventative and reactive maintenance activities are executed.
  • Ensure that critical integration spares are identified and minimum levels are determined and maintained by the relevant stakeholders accordingly.
  • Facilitate effective support and Interaction with key EMR role Players e.g. CASS, CLO, TSS to maximize collaboration.
  • Drive effective control of software and firmware updates on Integrated devices to ensure integration compatibility as well as mitigate cyber security risk.

SKILLS PROFILE

EDUCATION

Essential

  • National Diploma Electrical Engineering: Clinical Engineering,

or

  • Individuals that have completed theoretical subjects and the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) requirements of the Tertiary Institution and are confirmed to be eligible to receive a National Diploma Electrical Engineering: Clinical Engineering.

Candidates to submit CV together with academic transcript of subjects, and a copy of tertiary qualification/letter from the institution confirming the candidate has met the requirements to graduate.

Preferred

  • Member of the Clinical Engineering Association of South Africa (CEASA).
  • Eligible to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineering Technician or Technologist.

• Assist with the manufacturing of a non-sterile or sterile medicine or scheduled substance according to a formula and standard operating procedures approved by the responsible pharmacist
• Re-packing of medicine
• Distribution and control of stock of schedule 1 to 6 medicines or scheduled substances
• Reading and preparation of a prescription, the selection, manipulation or compounding of the medicine, the labelling and supply of the medicine in an appropriate container following the interpretation and evaluation of the prescription by the pharmacist
Cost per event management
• Monitor and reduce Cost Per Event within the Hospital environment
• Ensure cost containment of drugs in example: special motivation drugs, duration of treatment and generic substitution
• Monitor Managed Healthcare Variances in per diem contracts.
• Increase generic usage of commonly used products (including antibiotics, CVS drugs etc) within the hospital
• Planning and implement Public Health awareness campaigns, such as Breast Awareness Week, Heart Week, and Pharmacy Week etc.
• Dispense prescriptions – Hospital (includes Chemotherapy & Total Parental Nutrition advice and supply) and Retail.
• Manage all Total Parenteral Nutrition queries and orders where and when required
• Assist with clinical ward rounds where and when required
Logistic functions

• Supervise and control the acquisition, storage, dispensing, handling and packaging of medicines to ensure safety, efficacy and quality thereof.
• Assist with all aspects of ethical stock control including re-ordering of stock, unpacking of stock, maintaining dedicated stock areas for organisation and expiry dates.
• Conduct cyclical counts and full stock takes and preparation thereof
• Processing of stock for internal departments and inter-clinic sales
• Assist in the management of stock in accordance with Netcare Stock Management policy with special emphasis on designated stock areas
• Update doctors and wards with regards to out-of-stock situations and offer alternatives

• Do monthly pharmaceutical audit in allocated wards
Research activities
• Ensure that appropriate advice (ranging from new products to updated regimens) is available timeously to meet the needs of healthcare professionals and patients
• Make use of Drug Information Centres (e.g. Medicine Information centre and Pharmnet Amayeza)
• Make use of Research websites (e.g. MEDLINE, EMBASE) / Medical Journals (e.g. PubMed, via Intranet) via Clinical Software
• Cater for the needs of the hospital staff and patients and the specialized scope of practice, e.g. oncology medication, renal transplant medication, emergency clinical pharmacy, etc.
• Document and complete all queries, whether received in writing or telephonically with minimal delay.
