The incumbent will form part of a team developing PGM electrocatalysts for PEM fuel cell and electrolyser applications. Extensive experience in fuel cell electrocatalyst development as well as MEA fabrication is a requirement. Knowledge of electrochemistry, electrochemical processes technology, precious metals heterogeneous catalysis, or electrocatalyst preparation will be an advantage.
Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
- Develop electrocatalysts for PEM fuel cell applications.
- Conduct electrochemical & physicochemical analyses of electrocatalysts.
- Contribute to PEM electrocatalyst research within team.
- Undertake pilot production of electrocatalyst products.
- Develop electrocatalysts with a view towards improving key performance and durability metrics.
- Prepare MEAs with in-house manufactured and other commercially available catalysts via a range offabrication techniques.
- Oversee research to develop new state-of-the-art electrocatalysts & production methods for high volume catalyst production.
- Evaluate MEAs within single cells and stacks via a number of industry standard protocols.
- Regularly prepare intellectual property declarations for submission to NIPMO.
- Actively drive the technology transfer of HySA fuel cell products for commercialisation with HySA commercial partners.
- Identify opportunities for technology development and commercialisation.
- Keep up-to-date at a professional level with technology and business developments that are relevant to the division’s interests.
- Strong technical report writing abilities.
- Actively participate in the training, guidance and motivation of junior staff. Participate in team debates and technical decisions.
- Produce professional reports, papers and presentations at local and international conferences.
- Ensure that projects are executed on time and within budget.
- Develop annual fuel cell catalyst manufacturing scale-up plans aligned to long term organisational plan and contribute to implementation of organisational strategy.
- Identify resources, i.e. capital, facilities and equipment’s, etc. between functions (fuel cell catalyst, membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), stacks and fuel cell systems) and business areas.
- Design operational structure aligned to the business and divisional work plan.
- Ensure that SHEQ procedures are strictly adhered to and that project work is executed with maximum overall technical efficiency.
- Demonstrate through behaviour the values and vision of Mintek.
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in fuel cell catalyst R&D space
- Demonstrable extensive knowledge and understanding of fuel cell electrochemistry and electrochemical techniques.
- Heterogeneous catalyst preparation and scale up
- MEA fabrication methods
- MEA testing methods
- Knowledge or experience with SHEQ systems
- Must be computer literate
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum: MSc Chemistry or Chemical engineering with 3 years fuel cell industry experience
- Ideally: PhD Chemistry or Chemical Engineering

Financial sustainability
- Prepare proposals under direct/limited supervision, including Open Call proposals.
Execution, People and Planning
- Perform routine scientific and engineering research using standard methods, procedures and equipment.
Act as Principal investigators on such projects. - Perform complex scientific and engineering research under supervision.

Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Project Engineer: Mine Closure & Rehabilitation who will also assist in scoping the projects, investigating new sites and preparation of internal cost estimates and detailed designs. The primary purpose of this job is to implement, monitor and supervise Derelict & Ownerless mines projects on site, preparing monthly project reports, update on project programme and procedures. Preparing designs and specifications as well as conducting site inspections to ensure that project quality objectives are attained and that operations are undertaken according to standard specifications, statutory requirements, designs and in a safe manner.
Job description
Construction Supervision:
o Client representative on site for the projects
o Responsible for the on-site quality assurance and conformance to designs and specifications
o Ensuring compliance to statutory requirements as well as Mine Health and Safety Act requirements
o Verify the measurement and calculation of quantities for payment certificate.
o Address any on-site deviations to the scope, designs and specifications.
o Monitoring and tracking of all construction activities and programme of works and ensuring the contractor complies with all agreed policies and procedures
o Witness onsite quality tests and approve procured material.
o Compile daily diaries and progress report.
o Attend Progress Meetings and arrange and facilitate technical/coordination meetings.
Project Coordination
o Coordinate the execution of projects to ensure that the outputs / outcomes are in line with Mintek’s strategies and goals.
o Manage and assess all project documents submitted by contractors, including scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets.
o Proactively manage tasks and activities to ensure that problems and delays are identified early and remedial action is instituted to minimise consequences.

Stakeholder Management
o Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations.
o Interact and attend key meetings with law enforcement authorities and private security service providers.
o Manage relations between the contractors and mining communities, ensuring that potential areas are managed or escalated to the client accordingly.
o Security and team management for shafts installations

SHEQ management
o Ensure that effective SHEQ procedures are in place so that contractors and workers operate in a safe and

o Undertake risk assessments for own projects and review and approve contractor’s monthly SHEQ reports
o Preparation of SOPs and review thereof
o Preparation of standard management forms, letters, minutes templates etc
o Contribution to the standardisation of tender documents, evaluation criteria and other key MCR documents and processes.
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- MEng or/and MSc in Earth Sciences and related fields or relevant, ideal PhD in related fields.
- Extensive knowledge of the mining industry or public sector, mining communities.
- 10 years’ experience in the project management of either mine closure and rehabilitation programme, civil engineering, concrete works and earthworks.
COMPETENCIES:
