Senior Researcher – 3 year fixed term contract: RRT / RD (Internal/External) (North West)

Job profile:

Necsa is embarking on the design phase of the new Multi-Purpose Reactor (MPR) project, which aims to replace the ageing SAFARI-1 research reactor at Necsa over time. In this upcoming phase of the project, significant research and analysis support is required in the use of computational methods and codes as applied to research reactor calculations. The focus in particular is on computational support in the areas of safety analysis, neutronics and thermal-hydraulics.

In this role, the incumbent is expected to provide independent computational reactor and safety analysis support as required by the Necsa MPR project. The role is focused on technical execution of computational projects, working with other teams and multiple specialists. A particular requirement of the role is to build capacity in the area of multi-physics analysis of research reactor designs, and apply such knowledge in support of the Necsa MPR project.

The role is situated in the Radiation and Reactor Theory Department at Necsa, and in particular in the Reactor Dynamics research group. Contribution in this space requires a knowledge base regarding the appropriate physical models, related computer code systems and internationally accepted standards and good practices in nuclear analyses. It is expected that the incumbent keep abreast of and contribute to latest developments in nuclear analyses.

  • Capture research work done in written format; at least as co-author in regular progress reports, annual progress reports, technical reports, local and international conference contributions and journal publications.

Job Purpose

To lead and provide support to the Necsa research environment, to execute and manage larger scale and complex projects with multiple specialists, support personnel and team members. To collaborate closely with other related Groups in the Department to move promising research from laboratory scale to GMP phase. 

In the GMP Formulation environment, the main purpose of the job is to provide technical leadership and steer projects in the field of radiopharmaceuticals to enable clinical testing thereof and the signing off of preparations that are ready for use in clinical trials. This requires a well-developed knowledge base regarding the principles of good manufacturing practices as well as an understanding of radiopharmaceuticals and radiochemistry. The incumbent will also take the lead in ensuring that the GMP clean room is accredited with a cGMP licence from SAHPRA and that it is maintained to use radiopharmaceuticals in Phase I-III clinical studies.

An important aspect of this job is to define proposed solution approaches and translate them into project plans. It is expected that the incumbent keep abreast of and contribute to latest developments in radiochemicals and radiopharmaceuticals.

  • Direct, lead and guide technically specialised research and innovation in the unit toward the achievement of departmental objectives and key performance indicators (Publications, Substantial research reports and Conference contributions).

Provide a strategic and technical advisory role to Necsa with regard to research infrastructure and direction in the area of expertise in beam lines and applications. Provide technical leadership to high value research programmes directed at the Multi-purpose Reactor (MPR), which have significant impact on the Necsa technology development programmes, specifically the Neutron Beam Line Centre (NBLC), and contribute to the future sustainability of the organization.

In this specific role in the Applied Radiation department, the main purpose of the job is to provide highly specialised technical guidance, as well as longer term strategic direction in the areas of nuclear beam lines and related research infrastructure. The job requires an in-depth knowledge of the underlining scientific disciplines for the above. An important aspect of this job is to provide both high level scientific guidance to other group members, as well as direction to the relevant areas of research and development for the planned NBLC at the MPR. The incumbent is expected to hold a high level of national and international standing in the Beam Line sciences community, and thus establish and utilize such networks in achieving Necsa objectives.

Necsa is embarking on the design phase of the new Multi-Purpose Reactor (MPR) project, which aims to replace the ageing SAFARI-1 research reactor at Necsa over time. In this upcoming phase of the project, significant research and analysis support is required in the use of computational methods and codes as applied to research reactor calculations. The focus in particular is on analysis in the areas of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, isotope production, fuel & material testing as well as beam-line applications.

In this role, the incumbent is expected to lead and provide computational reactor physics support as required by the Necsa MPR project. The role would include both technical execution and management of such computational projects, overseeing teams and multiple specialists. A particular requirement of the role is to guide and develop team members in preparation for future phases of the project.

The role is situated in the Radiation and Reactor Theory Department at Necsa, and in particular in the Radiation and Reactor Analysis research group. Contribution in this space requires a well-developed knowledge base regarding the appropriate physical models, related computer code systems and internationally accepted standards and good practices in nuclear analyses.
