Financial Controller – Retail (Head Office)

Job Description

This is a mid-level finance role with real scope to grow, one for an ambitious accountant who is ready to step beyond pure technical delivery and take ownership of a team, a set of systems, and a broader business partnership.

You’ll lead a small finance team, work closely with store and operational managers, and drive the kind of process and systems improvements that make a meaningful difference to how the business runs. The accounting fundamentals matter, but what sets this role apart is the expectation that you’ll think and act like a business partner, not just a reporter of numbers.

Crucially, we want someone who is genuinely curious, someone who constantly asks “why are we still doing it this way?” and isn’t afraid to explore technology, including AI, to eliminate tedious manual work and free the team up for higher-value thinking.

Where you’ll focus your energy

Financial reporting & compliance

  • Responsible for the full reporting cycle. Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Ensures all numbers are accurate, complete, reconciliations are done and delivered on time.
  • Leads the budgeting process and ongoing forecasts. Works closely with different departments to track performance against budget and highlight risks or opportunities.
  • Analyses financial results, compile management accounts and provides insights to support decision-making. Identifies trends, cost-saving opportunities, and areas for growth.
  • Monitors cash flow and ensures the business can meet its financial obligations. Keeps a close eye on stock, debtors, and creditors.
  • Establishes and maintains strong financial controls to protect company assets and prevent errors or fraud.
  • Ensures compliance with accounting standards, company policies and tax regulations. Responsible for statutory reporting including monthly VAT submissions.
  • Prepare and manages year-end auditing processes and liaises with external auditors to ensure compliance.

Systems, technology & process improvement

  • Own the integrity of our financial systems (SAP and CISTECH) and actively look for smarter ways of working.
  • Use AI and automation tools to eliminate repetitive manual tasks like invoice matching and deposit reconciliation. We want someone who sees technology as an ally, not a threat.

People leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop a small finance team.
  • Set the standard for ownership and accountability, and create an environment where people grow.

Cross-functional collaboration

  • Partner with store managers and operational teams to translate financial results into practical decisions.
  • Be the finance voice that operations actually listens to.

What you’ll bring

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance with 3–5 years’ relevant experience.
  • Some experience leading or mentoring others (direct or indirect leadership).
  • Solid grasp of South African tax and statutory requirements.
  • Comfort with ERP systems (SAP advantageous) and advanced Excel.
  • A curious, improvement-oriented mindset, you notice inefficiency and feel compelled to fix it.
  • An openness to using modern tools and AI to automate routine work. Experience is a bonus, but the right attitude matters more.
  • Retail or multi-site experience is a plus.

What’s on offer

  • R40,000 – R50,000 CTC per month, depending on experience
  • Company medical aid contribution
  • Performance-based incentives linked to company results
  • A role with genuine growth potential as the business scales
