PERMANENT POSITION
GENERAL MANAGER: SOWETO THEATRE

The Joburg City Theatres (JCT), an entity of the City of Johannesburg that stimulates and
operates Joburg Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre, and Soweto Theatre to provide integrated theatre
management, is seeking a skilled and motivated General Manager: Soweto to join the JCT team.

Salary : R64,033.65 (Basic Salary Excluding Benefits)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 (NQF level 4)
  • A relevant Diploma (NQF 6) or equivalent tertiary qualification plus 15 years’ industry
    experience in Operations Management of which at least 8 years must have been at a
    senior management level;
    or
  • A relevant Degree (NQF 7) or equivalent tertiary qualification plus 10 years’ industry
    experience in Operations Management of which at least 5 years must have been at a
    senior management level.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and large operational environments.
  • Strong financial and budgeting experience, including oversight of revenue, expenditure,
    supply chain management and reporting.
  • Knowledge of governance, compliance, labour relations, disciplinary processes, and
    performance management.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management experience, especially within government, public
    entities, community structures, or corporate partnerships.
  • Strategic planning and implementation capability.
  • Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Work under pressure and unsociable hours

PRIMARY FUNCTION
Direct, develop, manage and implement the vision and mission of Soweto Theatre and provide
leadership, direction and overall control of the operations of the theatre in building shareholder
value, in a way consistent with the broad policy of the Board of Directors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement and monitor the operational requirements for the Soweto Theatre.
  • Develop a sustainable business model and strategy.
  • Manage the running of the theatre including the general maintenance of the theatre
    building, its stage machinery and its assets setting and maintaining excellent operating
    standards in both customer and client services.
  • Lead the Soweto Theatre management team to deliver on required results.
  • Identify and define the immediate, short- and long-term objectives/ plans associated with
    the provision of administrative support to Soweto.
  • Design and implement work procedures, standards and performance outputs.
  • Develop an effective marketing campaign and realization of revenue objectives.
  • Upgrade and maintain the theatre infrastructure, systems and equipment to provide for
    the needs of high-quality productions.
  • Coordinate and form partnerships for non-theatre programming
  • Ensure that Soweto Theatre is easy to contact, and improve existing communication
    networks

    measures against outcomes detailed in the Roodepoort Theatre’s Business and Strategic
    Plans.
  • Present a conceptual framework of current and future interventions necessary to support
    core service delivery areas with accurate information and records of work in progress.
  • Developing an effective marketing campaign and realization of revenue objectives.
  • Expansion and development of production capabilities and diversification of audience.
  • Devise innovative ways to attract new audiences to the theatre.
  • Upgrade and maintain the theatre’s infrastructure, systems and equipment to support
    high-quality productions.
