Mega Living Landscape Internship (12 Months Fixed-term contract)

SANParks is offering an exciting internship opportunity for a Mega Living Landscapes Intern in the Park Planning and Development Unit. Mega Living Landscapes are a reimagining of how to manage and conserve biodiversity on a much greater scale and in a more inclusive manner. They acknowledge the interconnectedness between biodiversity protection, climate resilience and the well-being of people.

The Mega Living Landscapes (MLL) Intern will assist with project planning and implementation within the Cape and Garden Route Regions which offers exposure to biodiversity stewardship and cross sectoral extension, landowner and stakeholder engagement and protected area expansion (contract national parks). Support will be needed for projects which aim to unlock key aspects in the process of expanding existing protected areas through focused, technical assistance and facilitating broader landscape scale conservation activities through awareness and capacity building, The position will be stationed in Cape Town.

Requirements

  • National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
  • Code 08 driver’s license is an essential requirement of the position.
  • Computer Literate in MS office packages.
  • Working knowledge of GIS.
  • Exposure in assisting in a conservation project.
  • 1-2 years working experience in the Cape Floristic Region.
  • Sound report writing and presentation skills.
  • High levels of personal responsibility and accountability.
  • Willingness to travel is essential.
  • Understanding of protected area expansion mechanisms would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Landscape Scale Conservation practices and processes.
  • Good interpersonal people skills.
  • Project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing biodiversity stewardship and cross sectoral activities in priority landscapes.
  • Assist with operational planning and implementation of various SANParks Mega Living Landscapes projects.
  • Assist with mapping using appropriate GIS tools.
  • Assist with the coordination of technical assistance interventions for stewardship sites.
  • Assist with stewardship capacity building and awareness interventions.
  • Assist with project management and administration (monitoring and submission of progress reports).

Graduate Internship Programme Opportunities – Kruger National Park

Applications are hereby invited from graduates who completed their National Diploma / Bachelor’s degree/and Honours (NQF6/NQF7/8) at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in South Africa and wish to be placed at SANParks for a period of twenty-four months with a monthly stipend of R6,355.69 – R9 088.37 depending on qualification NQF Level. SANParks is under no obligation to employ the Intern upon completion of the programme.
