Aon South Africa seeks a Digital Transformation Business Unit Manager for a hybrid role based at our Head Office in Sandton. The Business Unit Manager of Strategic Digital Solutions manages the strategy, dependability, and development of Aon’s Policy & Claims Administration functions. This position leads cross-functional efforts involving business, technology, operations, and third-party vendors. It drives determined roadmaps and applies rigorous governance, risk oversight, and financial management across the portfolio.

What the day will look like

Manage the comprehensive strategy, roadmap, and service condition of the Policy & Claims Administration platform. Maintain resilience, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness of the platform. Collaborate with platform and IT teams to establish and sustain the target architecture; foster continuous progress and lower technical debt. Ensure alignment with regulatory, access, privacy, records-management, and change-management standards.

Align platform roadmaps with business priorities, including automation and workflow optimization, FNOL (First Notice of Loss) optimization, and client portal and digital ecosystem integration.

Lead the portfolio of Digital Broking initiatives, crafting reasons, value hypotheses, and delivery plans to increase placement speed, win rates, and colleague experience. Manage the modernization of Aon Access, coordinating upgrades, integrations, and organizational change to foster adoption and measurable client and colleague benefits.

Lead cross-functional project teams emphasizing outcome-driven planning and benefits achievement. Establish and uphold governance standards including SteerCo cadence, important metrics, RAID logs, risk, and financial reporting. Oversee testing governance across SIT, regression, UAT, performance, and penetration testing, ensuring clear launch criteria and controlled releases. Plan and manage complex migrations and integrations to reduce business disruption while safeguarding data quality and security.

Manage and update the digital risk register, delivering clear updates to RGC/SteerCo and ensuring remediation activities are carried through. Direct the Business Continuity & Resilience framework for the digital landscape, including BCP stewardship, BIAs, and drill cycles. Confirm that operational controls, documentation of evidence, and consistent review schedules are implemented and maintained across digital operations. Integrate digital risk governance with the organization’s overall risk and compliance structures.

Provide strategic direction for high-risk digital suppliers, including performance tracking, SLA management, and contractual oversight. Integrate supplier contingency planning and support the organization’s Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) framework. Collaborate with procurement and third-party risk teams on inherent risk evaluations, continuous monitoring, and remediation efforts. Communicate supplier and SRM status to relevant governance forums, emphasizing contract dependencies and service risks.

Lead, mentor, and retain a skilled, high-achieving team. Establish clear objectives, consistent performance rhythms, and individual growth plans; ensure team goals align with the wider Digital Strategy. Support a culture of psychological safety, ownership, and continuous improvement that reflects what matters most to us. Develop strong connections with senior participants such as the COO, IT leadership, business unit heads, claims, affinity/personal lines business, and external partners.

Skills and experience that will lead to success

Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, or related field (postgraduate qualification or MBA advantageous).
  • Formal training/certification in project or programme management (e.g. Prince2, PMP, Agile/Scrum) is an advantage.
  • Any relevant certifications in IT governance, risk, or service management (e.g. ITIL, COBIT) will be beneficial.

Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of digital platforms and ecosystems, preferably encompassing policy & claims administration systems as well as broker/portal solutions.
  • Lead the portfolio of digital broking initiative—shaping arguments, value hypotheses, and delivery plans to increase placement speed, win rates, and colleague experience.
  • Manage project team (PM, BAs, business collaborators, and Third Party Vendor), promoting outcome-focused planning, clear RAID management, and benefits monitoring. Apply Aon’s governance standards (SteerCo cadence, critical metrics, risk/financial reporting) and documentation.
  • Plan, manage and oversee complex data/application migrations (platform‑to‑platform), ensuring data quality, cutover readiness, and minimal business disruption. Govern integration patterns and APIs across broking, policy, claims, finance, document, and reporting ecosystems in line with enterprise architecture and security standards.
  • Serve as the primary interface to business executives, market leaders, compliance, risk, finance, and shared services on progress of New Tickets / Amendments. Lead governance across SteerCo, OpsCom, Planning & Prioritisation, and Sprint meetings; produce decision-ready packs. Drive cross-workstream integration for BAU, New Features, and Change request plans so that dependencies and cutovers align effectively; ensure time is reserved for security testing (including pen tests) and remediation prior to launch.
  • Build, coach, and retain a high-performing team with varied backgrounds; set clear objectives, feedback rhythms, and growth paths. Foster a culture of psychological safety, accountability, and continuous learning aligned to Aon’s values.
  • Embed supplier contingency planning practices using the enterprise template; ensure critical vendors supporting Policy & Claims Admin, migrations, and broking are covered by current contingency plans. Contribute to Aon’s Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) framework by aligning Digital Solutions vendors to unified onboarding/offboarding, performance reviews, and relationship health measures. Coordinate with third‑party risk and procurement to streamline inherent risk questionnaires, ongoing monitoring, and paths for addressing critical issues; maintain a prioritized remediation backlog for high‑risk suppliers. Report SRM and supplier‑risk status into SteerCo/OpCom, highlighting contract dependencies, service risks, and mitigation tied to key delivery landmarks.
  • Business line executives, country leadership, operations, legal/compliance, risk, finance, enterprise architecture, information security, PMO/VRO, and outside vendors/partners.

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent collaborator management and communication skills – able to operate and articulate confidently with Exco and across technical and non-technical audiences. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making ability in ambiguous, high-stakes environments. Proven ability in building high-performing teams, embedding performance frameworks (important metrics), and driving engagement and continuous improvement. Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business strategy into clear, outcome-based digital roadmaps.

Experience

  • Demonstrated senior leadership background in digital, technology, operations, or strategic transformation within financial services, insurance, or a similarly complex, regulated setting. Established history of managing and advancing essential platforms (policy, claims, core systems, or equivalent) from start to finish. Extensive experience directing large, cross-functional initiatives that include various business units, technology groups, and external vendors. Practical involvement with complex data and application migrations. Oversight of testing, release, and deployment phases in a live environment. Considerable familiarity with risk management, business continuity, supplier risk, and operational oversight.

Business Operations – Technical, Risk and Control Manager

Delivering guidance and support on business operational compliance including insurance and other regulatory requirements such as, FAIS, TCF, PPR and POPIA as well as responding on Insurer compliance audit checks and binder due diligence. Supporting business with the design and implementation of minimum operating standards. Managing approval processes for sign off and acceptance. Operational Risk Requirements

Governance & Control, Operational risk requirements (1st line of defense) – coordinated by Compliance who guide, check and challenge (2nd Line of Defense). Internal Audit – 3rd line of defense.

Technical & Operational Compliance

  • Run the incorporation of legislative requirements into MOS
  • Agree compliance monitoring plan with Compliance and facilitate implementation
  • Manage implementation of agreed compliance improvement actions
  • Facilitate and assist in Intermediary Agreements; Outsourced and Binder Agreements with insurers as well a prepare and submit binder due diligence audits and assessments.
  • Liaise with Insurers on ensuring all stakeholders implement insurer change requests and communication thereof to business.
  • Technical review – Approve and sign off on changes to product and policy documentation including schedule of insurance ensuring compliance, FAIS, TCF and PPR.
  • Work with Product and Underwriting business support teams to ensure correct implementation of products in policy management systems.
  • Review and sign off, marketing collateral and client communication for technical correctness and regulatory compliance including FAIS, TCF and PPR.
  • Preparation, review and ongoing updating of Disclosure Notices.
  • Supporting business with Section 8(2)(d) (OSIP) queries.
  • Provide review of and response to the impact of regulatory changes from a business perspective.

Quality and Risk (Best practice and minimum operating standards)

  • Design & Maintain documents relating to MOS
  • Create an awareness and provide training of MOS to all staff
  • Monitor adherence to MOS and technical standards and report breakdowns
  • Liaise with Internal audit re an internal audit plan to monitor adherence to MOS
  • Implement and manage agreed quality improvement actions

Market Security

  • Liaise with International Market Security Committee to agree local SA approved and unapproved markets.
  • Manages the processes and communications surrounding these approvals.

Skills and experience that will lead to success

Qualifications.

  • A matric qualification.
  • Law degree (LLB) from a reputable tertiary educational institution.
  • Insurance related tertiary qualification preferable
  • Registration as a representative and Key Individual with the FSCA in terms of the FAIS act (Advantageous)

Knowledge

  • A solid grasp of relevant legislation and regulations pertaining to the industry.
  • A broad and solid grasp of insurance wordings
  • A clear comprehension of risk analysis methodologies related to the industry.
  • A well-developed understanding of and ability to support business enterprises in South Africa through risk management and insurance solutions.
