The Climate Risk Lab in the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) invites applications for the position of Senior Researcher in Climate Change and Health for appointment as soon as possible. ACDI is based at the University of Cape Town and supports research and training on climate change and sustainable development.

The Senior Researcher, in coordination with the Climate Risk Lab Director, will lead a core research theme attributing human health impacts to climate change, predicting short-term and long-term climate change impacts on health, and informing adaptation responses. This role will include development and oversight of research, conducting individual research, advising postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students, and actionable research activities such as supporting climate change policy and decision making at local, national, and international levels. This is an ideal opportunity for a researcher with an environmental health or public health background to work at the intersection of climate and health.

The Senior Researcher will also be responsible for fundraising around the climate and health research theme, as well as the administration of funding and research activities, including research monitoring and evaluation, finance, and HR for research activities related to the research theme.

Requirements:

  • PhD degree in a relevant discipline
  • At least 3 years’ work experience post PhD, with a research track record in climate change and/or health.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent publication track record, with evidence of recent productivity and high impact publications, commensurate with career stage.
  • Capability to lead or co-lead interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary team research projects.
  • Track record of securing independent funding for research, commensurate with career stage.
  • Track record of postgraduate co-supervision at Masters and/or PhD level.
  • Excellent data science skills, including advanced analysis, data visualization, and data management. 
  • Experience with science communication at workshops and/or conferences and with the public and/or decision-makers.

The following will be advantageous:

  • Track record of research on climate-sensitive health impacts and on climate change adaptation.
  • Knowledge of open science research principles and practices.
  • Excellent science communication, such as contributing to media articles, public speaking, media interviews.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a core research theme in the Climate Risk Lab focused on attributing health impacts to climate change, predicting future health impacts, and informing adaptation responses, including: identifying research questions; planning research activities; managing research data and code; ethics applications; and reporting on research progress.
  • Develop active research collaborations with other researchers in ACDI, across University of Cape Town, nationally and internationally.
  • Publish regularly in high impact journals.
  • Present research results at local and international meetings and other fora.
  • Co-design research with policymakers and practitioners.
  • Communicate research to diverse audiences, including policy makers and the public.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research.
  • Develop data analysis methods and tools, such as data analysis code.
  • Lead fundraising proposals that support the activities of the Climate Risk Lab, and manage relationships with funders.
  • Supervise and mentor postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students.
  • Coordinate with ACDI Finance Manager and Admin staff to manage research grants, including financial planning, procurement, recruitment, and expenses reporting.

The annual cost of employment for 2023, including benefits is between R712 437 and R1 027 040, and is under review for 2024.  This is a Senior Research Officer position equivalent in salary to a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town.

The Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) is an interdisciplinary, soft-funded research unit at the University of Cape Town. H3D staff and laboratories are situated across three sites on UCT Campus. H3D is seeking to appoint an experienced Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Investigator on a 3-year contract. This position will lead the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools to support the translational research teams discovering and developing innovative, lifesaving medicines across multiple disease areas and provide AI/ML support to the drug discovery teams at H3D.

Requirements:

  • PhD in computer science, computational chemistry, or a related field.  
  • 2 or more years post-PhD industrial or academic experience in a drug discovery research group, delivering actionable AI-based insights across multiple drug discovery projects and research teams.
  • Evidence of skills transfer and training, e.g. facilitating workshops and developing the associated teaching resources, running training sessions, frequent scientific communication/presentation.
  • Strong programming skills across multiple programming languages, particularly Python, including proficiency with Object-Oriented Programming.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Good understanding of the application of cheminformatics to drug discovery.

Advantages:

  • Working knowledge of molecular dynamics software and theory.
  • Strong track-record in translational, multidisciplinary team-based research.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conceptualise, lead, and execute computational research projects related to the application of AI/ML tools for drug discovery and development (data collection, cleaning, and analysis; developing and maintaining code; model development; publication of results; translation of findings).
  • Maximise impact of AI/ML methodologies by identifying suitable projects and applying relevant solutions to provide actionable data-driven insights.
  • Train staff members/postdocs/students/interns in the utilisation of the relevant tools and support the interpretation of results.
  • Co-ordinate project activities with a multi-disciplinary team of microbiologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, medicinal chemists and pharmacologists, as well as external collaborators.
  • Prepare clear presentations, reports, and publications for internal and external peer-review.

H3D Drug Discovery and Development

FACULTY OF SCIENCE

The Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) is an interdisciplinary, soft-funded research unit at the University of Cape Town engaged in the discovery of preclinical drug candidates for treating malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and drug-resistant infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. H3D is seeking to appoint a Chief of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Biology with expertise in TB and/or other infectious diseases caused by ESKAPE pathogens on a 5-year contract, starting on 1 July 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will head the H3D bacteriology teams, providing mentorship to the TB and AMR biologists and interact with the multidisciplinary teams to drive the drug discovery programs.  This position will report to the Head of Drug Discovery and be part of the Leadership Team responsible for the H3D’s overall scientific strategy.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant field or clinician scientist with equivalent qualification
  • >10 years of industrial or academic experience working in TB and/or AMR bacteriology
  • 6-10 years of industrial or academic experience in leading biology efforts on drug discovery programs, preferably in TB and/or other infectious diseases caused by ESKAPE pathogens.
  • A strong track record of relevant publications with the lead authorship in high-impact journals
  • Up to date on laboratory technologies and strong bench experience in microbiology and molecular biology

Advantages:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to following:

  • Oversee and lead all biology efforts in TB and AMR, including screening, target identification, and validation, assay development, development of disease models, etc

The School of Languages and Literatures (SLL), in the Faculty of Humanities, invites applications for a permanent appointment as Senior Lecturer in Chinese Language and Literature. SLL houses full academic teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in an interdisciplinary environment comprising a dozen scholarly fields related to the study of national, continental, and global as well as modern and classical languages and literatures. It engages increasingly with questions about transnational and “Global South” identities and contributes to the University’s transformation purpose “Vision 2030”. The Chinese Language and Literature section offers undergraduate courses in Chinese, contributes to interdisciplinary projects within the school, and aims at developing postgraduate programmes and research.

We hope to make an appointment of this Senior Lecturer position in Chinese as soon as possible.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed PhD in Chinese language and literature, or a related field
  • Native or near-native mastery of the Chinese Language
  • At least 2 years’ experience in teaching Chinese language and literature to 2nd language students at tertiary level
  • A research strategy and publications commensurate with career stage

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English in a predominantly English-speaking academic environment.

The Climate Risk Lab in the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) invites applications for the position of Senior Research Officer (SRO) or Chief Research Officer (CRO) in Climate Change Literacy for appointment as soon as possible. 

ACDI is based at the University of Cape Town and supports research and training on climate change and sustainable development. In close coordination with the Climate Risk Lab Director, the Senior Research Officer or Chief Research Officer will lead the core research theme on climate change literacy in the context of compound and cascading climate risks and adaptation options, including for education. Climate change literacy in this context refers to developing frameworks for understanding climate change risk, projecting how risks transfer through and across sectors (including for education), and quantifying factors that influence understanding of climate change risks for specific populations. This role will include representing the Climate Risk Lab at high-profile research, policy, and funding events, development and oversight of research, conducting individual research, writing for publication, advising postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students, and actionable research activities such as informing and influencing climate change policy and decision making at local, national, and international levels.   

The SRO or CRO will also be responsible for fundraising around the core research theme, as well as the administration of funding and research activities, including research monitoring and evaluation, finance, and HR related to the research theme.

The Special Tribunal, situated in the portfolio of the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Transformation, is seeking to appoint an Evidence Leader for the Special Tribunal. The Special Tribunal responds to UCT’s strategic transformation goals by implementing victim/survivor-centred disciplinary processes that uphold the commitment of the university to take action against violence, discrimination and harassment. The Special Tribunal facilitates university disciplinary hearings for Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), racism, discrimination and harassment in respect of staff and students. All Tribunal members and university representatives are trained and/or experienced in handling related matters.

The main purpose of this position is to: act on behalf of the University in presenting cases of SGBV, racism, discrimination and harassment before the Special Tribunal; evaluate evidence, draft charges, and issue summons; conduct consultations with complainants and pre-hearing meetings with respondents; lead evidence in cases of SGBV, racism, discrimination and harassment, and any other matters that may be determined by the UCT Council; and to work to reduce any secondary trauma or additional impact of such proceedings on complainants.

We therefore require a highly skilled and suitably qualified candidate that is self-motivated and able to operate independently. The position encompasses a number of critical responsibilities and frequently requires a high level of performance and time-critical delivery due to the very nature of its responsibilities. This position will be a permanent appointment with the Special Tribunal division within the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Transformation.  

REQUIREMENTS:

  • NQF 7 LLB degree with 5 years relevant experience related to SGBV, racism, discrimination and/or harassment.
  • Ability to work with victims/survivors.
  • Litigation experience, or relevant experience in a similar role to the Tribunal, and demonstrable legal advocacy skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present legal cases at a high level.

The University of Cape Town’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for a 3-year, full-time Junior Research Fellow position funded through the Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders (DEAL) programme. This role will work closely with the DELTAS II programme-funded project research grouping: African Leadership for Measuring brain health in children and Adolescents (ALMA) which aims to explore mechanisms of brain development, measurement of brain function and behaviour, and interventions to promote child development. The Junior Research Fellow will oversee and co-ordinate research, co-author and first author research publications, as well as supervise and teach students within the UCT Neuroscience Institute programme and be supported to write funding proposals and foster research collaborations. The successful candidate will need to have research experience in a relevant field, be motivated and able to work independently within a dynamic clinical research environment in Neuroscience. The activities of the Junior Research Fellow will be based at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the UCT Neuroscience Institute at Groote Schuur Hospital. The person will be required to travel between the two institutions regularly.

Requirements for the job:

  • A PhD in Psychology, Public Health, Neuropsychology, Medicine, Health, or relevant discipline
  • At least 2 years of research experience post PhD submission in relevant field
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in a relevant discipline with at least one first or senior author publication

  • The successful candidate is expected to spend a maximum of twenty percent (20%) of their time on administrative-related activities such as writing funding proposals.
    • Writing and submitting a research grant in the first year of appointment with the aim to secure funding for continued research through independent grants

The annual cost of employment, including benefits is between R544 062 and R658 000 (post is funded from research funding) depending on qualifications and experience.
