Registered Student Counsellor: Health And Wellness

Job Description

Purpose
The purpose of this position is to provide good quality psychological care for students at the primary health care level. The incumbent is expected to offer counselling and emotional support to students facing social, emotional, or behavioural challenges. Coordinate joint programmes with the staff counsellor team to facilitate ongoing professional development for educators to enhance their ability to support students with diverse learning needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • A) Professional bachelor’s degree in psychology, at NQF8 level.
  • B) Bachelor Honours degree or the equivalent to the BPsych degree that incorporates an approved 6-month or 720-hour face-to-face practicum.
  • Active registration and compliance with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Counsellor
  • Driver’s license
  • Willingness to work outside normal working hours.
  • A minimum of at least 2 years of relevant work experience preferably in an educational field.

Duties and responsibilities

Crisis intervention

  • Provide counselling that focuses on acute or critical situations (e.g. victims or witnesses of crime or violence, accident victims, emergency emotional containment)

Ecosystem

  • Provide a dynamic interaction for individual students and group sessions and the broader student community.

Fundamental understanding of psychopathology

  • Understanding psychopathology for the purposes of screening.
  • Understanding that Registered Counsellors act as a consultant at the primary curative/ preventative level across the full scope of psychology. This intervention requires the application of concrete and predetermined decision-making rules.
  • Being the first line of student-based psychological support.

Primary Intervention

  • Providing preventative and developmental counselling services and interventions on all systems levels.
  • Identifying and addressing causes of problems or containing expressed emotion.
  • Assist in keeping records in the state as prescribed by the Professional Board for Psychology and the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
  • Develop activities designed to ameliorate stressors.
  • Provide psycho-education and mental health promotion: A planned, proactive transfer of information designed to promote and enhance psychosocial well-being for individuals, families, groups and communities.

Research and Education Awareness.

  • Provide psycho-education and mental health promotion that addresses relevant issues in student community contexts.
  • A planned, proactive transfer of information designed to promote and enhance psychosocial well-being for individual students, groups, and the entire student community.
  • Use quantitative and qualitative data to inform decision-making and scholar support strategies.
  • Assist in coordinating school and community outreach activities

Psychological counselling intervention

  • Provide screening, assessments, psychological education and training and referral for students.
  • Develop and monitor the psychometric work of the Interns/Peer Educators/Wellness Warriors at the Centre.
  • Do an investigation of possible disruption to a client’s psychological well-being and early identification of mental health challenges.
  • Identify symptoms or reasons for referrals to professionals within the healthcare system.
  • Provide counselling that assists to alleviating traumatic responses and/or assists clients to adjust to altered circumstances.
  • Maintain accurate and organised case files, including process notes and progress reports for each student, ensuring compliance with confidentiality and data protection regulations

Professional Development and Collaboration

  • Implement behavior management policies and procedures that cultivate a strong and positive student culture.
  • Implement a work readiness programme for all final-year students in collaboration with Career Services Unit.
  • Collaborate with Staff Counselling officers to offer mentoring and guidance to lecturers and staff to enhance their professional growth, providing opportunities for skill development and creating a culture of continuous learning.
  • Building professional networks with other mental health professionals such as Psychologists, Psychometrists, and even doctors is important in referring clients appropriately.

Senior Officer (P9): Primary Health Care

Job Description

Purpose

The main purpose of this position is to provide students with clinical, educational and advocacy interventions appropriate to the scope of a Professional Health Care Nurse within a student-centered and professional multidisciplinary primary health care service.

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree/Diploma in Nursing Science (General, Psychiatric, Community) and Midwifery
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment,
  • Treatment and Care (Primary Health Care)
  • Dispensing Course – dispensing of medicines in line with the Essential Medicine List
  • Dispensing license (apply within 1 month after assuming duty)
  • Current SANC registration Qualified and Registered Nurse
  • Willingness to work outside normal working hours
  • 5 years related experience in Primary Health Care Computer literate

Duties and responsibilities

Health and wellness

  • Conduct individual consultations with students which include history-taking, physical examination assessment, diagnosis, treatment, care management and follow up
  • Prescribe medications (up to schedule 4) including contraceptive medications & antibiotics for STI’s
  • Take specimens for and order specific diagnostic tests – including bloods, X-rays), ultrasound, urine, pregnancy, CD4, HIV Antibody, stool, swabs, VDRL etc.
  • Monitor student patients including HIV positive patients with opportunistic conditions and participate in/support the ‘DOTS’ system for TB patients
  • Refer student patients for specialised care or investigation – to other internal and/or external health professionals and facilities externally
  • Perform minor clinical procedures including pap smears, ear syringing, taking of blood and other specimens, giving injections, dressings, suturing etc.
  • Perform a range of clinical tasks including sterilization of instruments and dressing packs, ensuring a sterile and hygienic environment in the consulting and treatment rooms during and after use
  • Counsel student patients including pre and post-termination of pregnancy, HIV VCT counselling, relationships, sexual activities, diet/wellness, rape, women’s and men’s health issues
  • Contain health care emergencies as they arise, including trauma, asthma attacks, assault, rape, sexual abuse, panic attacks, psychotic presentations, acute anxiety disorders, para-suicides

Student wellness

  • Assist and refer appropriately students who have difficulties with, e.g. academic performance, housing, nutrition, food/catering, finances, legal aid, health & safety on campus, etc.
  • Provide feedback to management on systemic issues and problems negatively affecting students’ mental health/wellness

Education and training

  • Educate students during Individual consultations
  • Co-ordinate and participate in workshops, talks and wellness expositions with students across the university including residences
  • Prepare and distribute educational materials including posters, pamphlets etc.
  • Conduct/ deliver talks to parents, relevant staff, SPU Radio etc.

Administration

  • Assist in intake / sorting – triage duties in the reception area [this includes triaging new patients, dealing with emergencies, making referrals, dealing with ‘level 2‘ queries]

  • Assist in the ordering of medications, state-provided supplies (STI’s, contraceptives etc.), medical consumables

Monitoring, evaluation and reporting

  • Prepare and maintain all treatment records [e.g., referrals, consultation notes] on student client file and on the management information system
  • Obtain feedback from student patients both on an individual basis and through questionnaires, suggestion-box etc.
  • Record and submit monthly statistics to management and where necessary to the Department of Health
  • Co-ordinate and/or participate in evaluation/surveys and lessons for service planning.

Officer (P10): Administration

Job Description

Purpose 
The main purpose of this position is to proactively provide efficient and effective administrative and secretarial support to the Department/Section.

Minimum Requirements 

  • Relevant Diploma
  • 5 to 6 years related experience
  • Computer literate (MS Office)
  • Experience with ERP financial Systems

Recommendations 

  • Experience in the Higher Education vertical will be advantageous.
  • ICT Customer Service experience is desired

  • Matching up of PO request and original PO from ITS
  • Communicate with all vendors regarding outstanding deliveries and payment procedure
