Position Overview:
The Early Childhood Manager will provide oversight and instructional support and coaching to teachers as they provide a social and emotional emergent play based experience for children. The Coach’s primary role is to provide coaching to teachers and assistants for improving early learning environments and supporting effective teaching strategies in the classroom that lead to positive outcomes for children.
As an advisor to teachers and part of the leadership team, the Coach is responsible for four main areas: a) observing instructional delivery and providing feedback to enhance and support the development of each teacher’s content area b) supporting teachers in play based emergent curriculum through modeling and support, c) analyzing data in order to modify curriculum and forms of assessment to meet students’ needs, and d) working with staff in the school to support sharing of best practices.
The Ubuntu School is looking for someone who models flexibility, passion, and commitment to supporting and building others. This person needs to have a deep understanding and commitment to progressive education and be able to dive into a new curriculum that they may be unfamiliar with. This person will encourage reflection, provide guidance and structure, and focus on teacher strengths and accountability.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Work closely with the teachers and administrators to strategically create and implement a plan to increase student achievement.
- Work with various teams (administrators, teachers) to facilitate analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments. Help teacher teams develop both school-wide and classroom intervention plans.
- Assist teachers in understanding Ubuntu’s mission, core values and progressive education
- Teach/model lessons in classrooms on a daily/weekly basis, teaching lessons side-by-side with teachers
- Work closely with school principal and care team to organize professional development plans/sessions, orientations and training programs for staff
- Observe teachers’ lessons and provide feedback for professional growth and students’ success
- Work to create an effective learning community and demonstrate progress through weekly coaching documentation
Required Qualifications:
- Strong commitment to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of Ubuntu Pathways and the Ubuntu School
- Demonstrated ability to work with young children and families from diverse racial/cultural populations
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years teaching experiences in a Preschool or Foundational Phase Setting
- Familiarity with play based emergent curriculum
- Knowledge of and experience with student-centered curriculum, instruction, and assessment, as well as progressive education
- A deep understanding of early childhood development
- Experience working with adult learners, coaching teachers, and delivering professional development.
- Excellent judgment, growth mindset, communication, and creative problem-solving skills
- Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive working style

Job Summary
The Head of School is responsible for the management and day-to-day operations of the school. The Head of School reports to the Chief Strategy Officer The Head of School serves as a school leader and has the authority to carry out his or her responsibilities, in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board. In partnership with the Chief Strategy Officer, the Head of School is responsible for the success of the school. S/he provides direction for adhering to the organization’s vision, mission, and strategy; provides leadership for establishing and implementing its annual goals and objectives; and, enables the Board to fulfill its legal, fiduciary and moral responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Educational Leadership
- Implements a high-quality, rigorous and trauma-informed elementary and middle school program that is consistent with Ubuntu Schools’ mission and vision.
- Sets ambitious school goals for student achievement and performance and holds staff members accountable for achieving results
- Develops, oversees, and continual evaluates and improves the school’s instructional model and curriculum.
- Models high quality instruction and provides frequent coaching for instructional staff.
- Uses data to inform practice and drive decision-making and instruction at the school
2. Legal compliance
- Assures the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitors compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
3. Mission, policy and planning
- Works with the Chief Strategy Officer to oversee the growth of the school to its full capacity with grades pre-K-8 and 300 students.
- Aligns to the School’s vision, overall direction, and short- and long-term goals.
- Oversees the renewal and site visit process and development of school’s Annual Report.
- Develops, implements, and ensures adherence to the school’s accountability plan.
- Keeps the School Board fully informed on the condition of the school and on all the important factors influencing it.
4. Management and administration
- Creates and sustains an environment of mutual respect, high standards, safety, and support for learning.
- Provides general oversight of all school activities, manages the day-to-day operation of the
school, and develops a smoothly functioning, efficient organization through coordination with School Board, committees, staff and volunteers.
- Ensures that the Director of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) has the necessary resources and expertise to lead the school’s educational program.
- Ensures that the Operations Coordinator has the resources to effectively oversee all operational aspects of the school.
- Evaluates and supervises members of the Leadership Team (DCI, Op Coordinator and others) and supervises evaluation of all members of the staff.
- Develops an annual calendar to address all crucial issues in a timely fashion.
- Develops and oversees the school assessment calendar
- Oversees the analysis of all assessment result and student growth metrics
5. Finance
- Works with the Chief Strategy Officer and Finance Committee to develop and implement an annual operating budget based on school needs
- Works with the CSO to ensure financing to support short- and long-term goals.
- Participates actively in donor visits and donor requirements
6. Community relations
- Works with the broader school community to ensure stakeholders know the school and support our mission and vision
- Encourages the integration of the school within the community by using effective communication and public relations programs.
- Listens to clients, volunteers, donors and the community in order to improve services and generate community involvement. Assures community awareness of the school’s response to community needs.
- Serves as chief spokesperson for the school, assuring proper representation of the school and the Board to the community.
